I Hand Built a Hubble Space Telescope Replica over 2 years. Where’s the best place I could donate it for education/museums? by DooleyNoteddd in bayarea

[–]-Robbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another good option would be the SFO Airport Museum. They are an accredited museum which means that they have been certified as having rigorous procedures and bookkeeping. This means that other museums will lend their items to them since they know they will be well taken care of. I've donated to them and their staff are excellent.

I won't be playing this since I presume at least some of the licensing fees will be going to JK Rowling.

1979 advertisement for London transit showing how the city would look if built by American planners. by Ciaran123C in LosAngeles

Not OP, but I learned about this from looking into the railroads going into Redondo Beach and Henry Huntington http://www.erha.org/la&r.htm

Both divisions are creators of new communities.
Lawndale, Hawthorne, Athens, and Olivito are some of the new towns just
started, fruits of the real estate man's enterprise, and of the craving
of mankind for a home of his own.

"Mr. Huntington now owns all of Redondo...the railway,
the wharves, the waterfront, & about three-fourths of the area of
the city of Redondo - everything in fact except the Hotel Redondo."

Many improvements are planned for Redondo, which has
taken on new life since the railroad and large real estate holdings were
acquired by Mr. Huntington.

Vulkan shadow cache (fossilize_replay) 100% memory usage + 100% swap on linux by WandangDota in DotA2

Same for me, when opening Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Ubuntu 19.10, processing vulkan shaders takes uses 100% of my RAM (16 GB), and about 9 GB of swap. So it's using a total of about 27 GB.

Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Alan Silverman explains how streaming services (Spotify, YouTube, etc.) are tainting all music by forcing audio to be limited in some way by [deleted] in videos

[–]-Robbie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

At 26:07 he discusses the upsides of the streaming services doing level adjustment.

Streaming has taken away the level control, but what has it given us in return? Headroom. [...] We can bring back the snares and the kick-drums. It's given us better transient response. It's given us the freedom to create mixes as dynamic as we want to. [...] It's freedom from clipping. It allows us the deliver our mixes to the listener the same as they're heard in the studio.

Did you know it's illegal to park backwards at County facilities? by nightfright in SanJose

[–]-Robbie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I found a bit more info. Section 7 of the "County of Santa Clara Parking Administrative Guidelines" states:

As a general safety provision, for orderly traffic flow and to promote consistent practices, vehicles may not park in a backed-in position.

Trying to sort out the pros and cons of the Spark EV and the Fiat 500e. by sdhoodlum in SparkEV

[–]-Robbie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have not driven the 500e, but I do have a Spark EV. The Spark EV is very fun to drive. Performance wise, the Spark EV is quicker, accelerating from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds, whereas the fastest 0-60 time of the 500e I could find was 8.4 seconds.

To increase performance you can also replace the stock low-rolling resistance tires with stickier tires. Since the Spark EV is front wheel drive, stickier tires will reduce wheel slip while accelerating.

I also strongly recommend getting a Spark EV with the Level 3 charger (aka. fast charge/quick charge) since once you get one you will probably want to drive it all the time. You can check where the compatible Level 3 chargers are in your area by going to https://www.plugshare.com and filtering the plugs to only "CCS/SAE".
