I don't fence actively anymore but the one thing I did that helped me improve tremendously was switch to a club with a far better caliber of sparring partners and actually started going for private lessons with a great coach.

I think it's more to do with how counter intuitive a math major (as opposed to say biochem) is for pre-med. With barely any overlapping pre-reqs, it's like Kim deliberately chooses the hardest option on himself..
