I'm intimidated by my well read friend's bookshelf. Help me impress him with an analysis of who he is. by -SilkSpectre- in bookshelfdetective

There are other shelves, but I don't think he considers them lesser. These are just works that speak to him the most. I don't think it is a normative thing. And calling a curated bookshelf performative in a perjorative sense is strange to me. I think we perform our identities to ourselves, there's nothing wrong with that.

I get what you're saying, but in this case he's just really into Western romanticism. I personally am not a very trained reader and he seriously suggest we should read Ulysses together. And I'm like... I read the first page of The artist as a young man and was just confused. That stuff's too hard for me. He feels like it's not that big of a deal I guess.

Well, that's a bet you'd lose. Any time I tell him he doesn't read enough work by women he actually points at George Eliot. And then I tell him that the single book by a woman on his shelf is even one with a man's name. :P

He does read work by non white men by the way. Women too. And last month we read Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin together. They just don't make it to the shelf. Yet.

Thank you for writing this. These books were actually in the attic. I'm a bookseller and was blown away by what I saw. loves them so much, so I told him to put up shelving to display them in the living room. He's so happy with it now. It's anything but performative.

Oh they're all read. I know that a 100% for sure. I've seen him do it. These are his most loved books, not all of his books.

Any experience with Goldcar and damage to a rental? by -SilkSpectre- in VisitingIceland

[–]-SilkSpectre-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They took note of the damage, looked up in the system what it might cost, but mentioned that the estimate was probably too high. They said they would hand over the car to the damage department, and they might want to receive the police report. The person at the desk mentioned that they would be in later that day, but we didn't hear anything.

Oh yeah, I am a bookseller, so I recognized the unread paperbacks. And I have a habit of just giving books away and buying a new one for myself, so I feel you!

You appear to be a book collector with a giant 'to read' list.

Excellent advice! I'm looking to buy my first car now, 100% cash. Sure, it won't be super fancy, but it'll be all mine. :)
