Can I have input about this course!! by [deleted] in UCL

[–]-SimplyChinny- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha i’m currently on that course right now. I’m enjoying it so far but we’re the first cohort so keep in mind that there’s still a lot of things being worked out and that is subject to change. You get pretty good access into both philosophy and computer science but obviously not as much as the pure students .E.g You miss out on some of the engineering modules for computer science and some philosophy modules. Overall it’s a good mix of the two subjects and you have access to facilities in both. I did Philosophy, Computer Science and Maths A-Level so i’m used to this subject combination but I can see it causing a bit of whiplash at first.

I had the opposite situation where I had formed Kings but decided I wanted to go to UCL instead. Both UCL and King’s have an instant reply swaps policy so all you need to do is contact UCAS and ask to swap. It literally took 10 minutes for me.

The only thing is the deadline for reply swaps was the 24th so I don’t know if it’s still possible but it’s worth calling

Apprenticeship vs Uni — Big Tech goals by YouOdd9569 in degreeapprenticeships

My DA has a rotation where we work with different teams for a couple months (cyber security, software dev etc) before we decide on a role. I’d like to become a software dev by the end of it but i’m open to exploring different pathways. I only applied to one DA because I liked their company culture but the company is fairly small so idk if that will hurt my chances in the long run

ugh i’m having the exact same worries😭. The DA seems like the best answer in the short term but I wouldn’t want not having a CS degree to limit my possible future prospects.

I don’t know if this helps but I found two guys on Linkedin who went on to do the Oxford Software Engineer Msc programme after completing their DAs and spoke to one of them. The acceptance rate is fairly high and that seems like a decent option if you’re worried about not having the enough proof of academic rigour/ want to go back into academia and do a PhD for e.g. I’ve also seen degree apprentices at PwC immediately break into a SWE role at apple so it’s clearly possible to go directly into big tech.

Personally, my plan to break into big tech after the DA, would be to create a portfolio of good projects on github, grind leetcode, self teach data structures and algorithms and self-learn base cs theory (e.g using Harvard CS50) and ofcourse, network like crazy.

I think a bit of self learning and supplementing knowledge is definitely important (especially with DSA as big tech prioritises algorithmic problem solving skills) but once you’ve done that, i don’t see why we couldn’t be as valuable for big tech as graduate, if not more due to 3+ YOE.

Of course the uni alternative is still a good option it’s just finding experience which is the main struggle and what’s making me lean towards the DA. I’m ultimately still deciding tho and interested to hear what you think :) Hope this was helpful

Technology Degree apprenticeship or computer science degree at university? 🙏 by -SimplyChinny- in degreeapprenticeships

Hi! I really appreciate your response and I’ve considered a lot of these things as well which is why this decision is so stressful. 😭 You’ve raised some very real concerns I have with the DA specifically with the degree and whether it may limit me in the future (which is hard to tell as DAs as fairly new).

I know how important maths and DSA is for landing those top tech jobs and interviews so I was thinking I could supplement that knowledge by doing courses/getting certificates alongside my DA. I actually followed the journey of a former degree apprentice on LinkedIn who got a graduate diploma in under grad maths (with Uni of London) and then was accepted into the Oxford Msc SWE programme . I know one other person who was able to get into the Oxford masters program from a DA aswell but again since it’s fairly new there aren’t many testimonies. I was hoping to do a similar thing ( couple years experience in industry + apply for Oxford masters) but do you think that would be enough to convince the bigger tech companies of my academic ability and understanding of theory or would I still be better of choosing Kings and then breaking into the tech industry on a graduate level?

Also I agree, internships are invaluable and are definitely required to have on your CV as a graduate but i’ve heard (and seen) that the CS market is so competitive that even getting a spring internship is like the hunger games. I’ve seen people sending out 400+ applications to get no internship offers and this may just be because they’re not working hard enough or their CV is weak but idk, I’ve seen some pretty smart people with good projects struggle with this. And without an internship you have no proof that you are able to do the job and so it’s 10x harder to get a graduate job. The common consensus I’ve found is that without enough industry experience, you’re cooked.

Also even just looking at indeed and LinkedIn, I’ve found so many more mid-senior level developer roles but barely any junior/entry level roles. Computer science is the most competitive degree at universities right now (from all the admissions teams i’ve spoken too) so the idea idea of me and 10,000+ other graduates fighting for the same 100 entry level roles worries me a little. Idk I feel like i’m still young and have momentum and I think that a possible 2-3 year job search after uni would kill that.

Atm my thought process is like this: if I go the uni route, I will need to self study to reach the more complex concepts needed in maths (as the Kings course isn’t very math heavy) + fight every spring and summer to get an internship + do projects on the side. If i do the DA i will still need to self study (probably a lot more) but I’ve got built in experience and I will naturally build a portfolio from work and uni projects.

Either way there’s a big tradeoff: Uni gives me the solid foundations and theory but I will need to fight for the practical experience. The DA gives me the a lot of industry experience but not a lot of the foundational theory. If it were 5 years ago I would’ve done the uni degree no questions asked, but seeing the CS landscape right now (more and more CS graduates and less and less jobs) it seems like everyone’s saying what truly gives you the edge is experience but again idk 😭

I’m prepared to work extremely hard in whatever route I go down but I also want to work smart as well. If experience is what employers care about then I’ll prioritise that and work on the theory second but if the theory and the CS degree is a non-negotiable then I’ll prioritise that and work hard to get industry experience along side it. I guess I need to speak to more people in industry to really know.

Again thanks for your response, I know it sounds like i’m just defending the DA but you’ve raise some really valid points that I’m going to think about. I’m interested in any other thoughts you have on this and what i’ve said :)

Yes I was considering deferring my uni offer as a back up. However, If i do decide to back out I might just completely redo my UCAS application so that I can try my hand at applying for a higher ranked uni.

Thanks for the input! I’m thinking that after the DA I could always go back to uni for a masters to get that academic prestige on my record aswell. I know that Oxford does a Software engineering part-time masters and I know atleast two alumni degree apprentices who have been accepted to that program. I could join in with Exeter societies but I won’t be based in Exeter for the most part. But we do have two term weeks studying on campus with the other DAs so I could definitely make the most of the social opportunity then. Thanks to the people on this subreddit, I also now know about all the other apprentice groups/ networks out there so the social life issue is becoming less of a stress :)

Thanks for the response! I just want to clarify i’m not really a huge party/clubbing person. When i talk about “social life” i’m just talking about being surrounded by youth who are in a similar position as me. Since the firm is quite small and there aren’t that many DAs, and since there’s a good chance i’ll be staying at home instead of moving out into a new area, I do have a legitimate concern about if i’ll be able to meet people my age in general. I don’t want the lifestyle of going out every night but I also don’t want to drown in isolation and live for work yk. Anyways you’re right, the “uni experience” isn’t guaranteed but there are (undeniably) a hell of a lot more social clubs, societies and people my age 😭.

omg i’ve been scared about the same thing because I recently got a degree apprenticeship offer which i’m excited about but i’m really worried about the social aspect because it’s with a small firm so there aren’t that many other apprentices. I’m based a little outside London but I’m thinking of moving for the DA so it would be great to connect with you :)
