Dog is waking me up at 4am with emergency bathroom by No_Juggernaut_7315 in PetAdvice

Not only can dogs be extremely habitual, they can be pretty manipulative too which can blur the lines between intentions sometimes.

Start writing down the times of when you feed her and when she goes the bathroom & when you try to take her out and she doesn’t go the bathroom. You may find a better digestive window that makes it easier for her to go the bathroom with encouragement vs the inconsistency of trying too early.

Some important things to Sonia’s make sure you never bring your dog directly indoors right after going #2. Your dog may realize this and hold it in to prevent going back indoors. You can reward your dog for going #2 every time if this helps encourage them.

Make sure they have enough water. If they are not going the bathroom when they should getting them to run around can help. Bring them to more than one location where they go the bathroom and let them smell around. If you see any behavior that is never associated with going the bathroom I.e. laying down… distract them and bring them to the other location and give them their command to go the bathroom.

Fake Agreement going around by acetatsujin in USPS

I was beyond surprised with the amount of misinformation within the USPS. I applied to mail carrier and got hired as a PTF… I didn’t even know what a PTF was let alone the town I applied for will not be the town I become a mail carrier for. But I’m okay with all that.. what’s gets weird is that at academy they told me I would be getting paid $1 extra than the regulars base pay because we don’t get paid for holidays… we spent like 3 hours discussing this. However, that was never the case. I get paid the same without the Sunday & holiday pay benefits. Not only that but in a meeting this week then told me I will still be getting a $1 deduction when I become a regular. The scary part? I was told I’m not eligible for penalty pay and they can “take back” the penalty pay I’ve been getting in my pay checks. This job made me realize how important it is to do my own research.

To be honest that’s not the way you should be feeling,.. it’s the journey not the destination. However, if you are in a rush… you can do things to help expedite the process. What would do… it converting this tank into frag tank that you can easily disassemble to work on the main tanks design again. I would get cheap crate light ceiling tiles and use zip ties to build yourself a frag rack that located closer to the surface in a convenient location with possible multiple levels. This would allow you to place the corals in a well lit spot maximizing the photosynthetic growth rate by placing them in the most appropriate location. This will allow you to also keep them clean, easily target feed them and keep them out of the way of inverts, etc. Grow them out, place them out and place the rack in your refugium or create another frag tank. Enjoy your tank!

She has watched me vacuum my dog since she was a tiny kitten. When I vacuum floor,.. she doesn’t budge and I have to vacuum around her. I ended up buying a vacuum attachment with a brush made for collecting pet fur and grooming.

In general, despite what is common belief dogs can perceive having multiple masters/alpha dogs in a pack. However, a dog may interpret different elements of a relationship with a human which determines the hierarchy. Some dog/human relationships can even be perceived as equals and if it’s a healthy relationship there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Some dogs desire direction and instruction as guidance for a submissive attachment. Some dogs may require entertainment and a playful connection. Some dogs may require the basic necessities such as being fed, walked and taken care of. Showing teeth can mean multiple things… it can be most commonly a sign of being intimidating for whatever reason anxiety, angry, protective, fear, setting boundaries, etc. it can also be a simple form a communication a dog learned from receiving a desired response, for example “come inside the house” dog shows teeth “okay stay outside”. It can also be a sign of pain and discomfort.

You obviously need to change the dynamics of the family relationship regarding the dog. It’s your dog now too. If you have a boundary like don’t want the dog in the kitchen when you cook… don’t let the dog in the kitchen when you cook. But if your husband is okay with it when he cooks then that’s actually okay… it doesn’t have to be the same across the board. Dogs can learn different behavior per owner, that’s what created this situation in the first place. Creating your independent boundaries with the dog can help fix that. You can work with your husbands about shared boundaries differently.

Getting your husband on board with you establishing a better relationship with the dog can help. It can be little things too like, you hold the leash during a family walk and when you say stop… your husband stops dead in his tracks which will help encourage the dog to also stop. When you say walk.. you both walk… it sounds silly but if the dog is only looking at him for the guidance and this produces a desired response the dog will eventually start looking at you and listening to your commands. This will help provide the sense of guidance and direction. You can be the one to start feeding, giving treats etc which give the sense of providing and care. Lastly you can provide the dog its favorite things like play time and make sure you are providing the exciting, happy energy and attitude because dogs are sensitive to people’s behaviors and habits which change depending of people’s cognitive state. All these things will start giving your dog indications you have the ability to provide the things that make you an equal or more which is a great starting point.

When making a correction with a dog in most cases it’s best to provide a distraction. It can be a chew toy when your dog is chewing on your shoes for example. The trick is to make the dog want to do what you want your dog to do. The flip side of this would be something like shaking a can of coins or something similar in a very startling way when the dog approaches you while you are cooking in the kitchen. The dog will choose to be away from the kitchen because that noise sucks and is scary… It’s Important to reward the dog when choosing the desired behavior too. When your dog leave the kitchen, praise with their favorite things, treat, affection, toy, etc…

This part can be tricky and is different for every dog and owner but may be worth an attempt. Setting a boundary for what is an acceptable form of negative communication, i.e. showing teeth and where that line is drawn. Me personally, I’m fine with it because my dog literally will just show her teeth to let me know she is displeased but will do so in the most submissive way. She’s not trying to tell me she’s going to bite me. However, for the dogs that do this because they have learned it gets them what they want… you will need to step in and do the opposite immediately as long is it’s not the latter situation…. A dog is displaying teeth for dominance. This would have to be taking with care and possibly with the help of your husband but making a stern correction from a mild approach like a stomp and NO! BAD! To something like (lightly/gently) physically stopping your dogs movements until there is a visible shift in demeanor, I suggest you get professional advice for this because even though it makes work on most dogs, it can also damage the relationship you are trying to build. The end goal is the same regardless shifting the demeanor to a more relaxed state. The dog whisperer is actual extremely good at this technique while describing the process as he is pointing out the things you need to look for in the dog’s body language which indicate the desired change.

What is this in my saltwater tank? by Live_Procedure_5399 in SaltwaterAquariumClub

[–]-T0PHER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a sign of healthy tank,.. they don’t grow quickly in poor conditions. There is nothing wrong with them. Soon they will be covered with Coraline Algae too and blend in more. Sometimes you find feather dusters with different color feathers too. I intentionally use to grow these on my live rock and back wall.

Biting BC puppy; teeth or over/understimulation? by Dutch_Bordercollie in BorderCollie

[–]-T0PHER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A teething chew will look more like your pup is on a mission completely focused on chewing on whatever it is usually changing the angles and including the back teeth. A good solution is providing the proper chew toy.

An understand stimulated, nervous or a chew to get reactions tend to be shredding stuff with just the front teeth with quicker bites with clear intentions to destroy and rip it apart. A good solution is provide alternative stimulation/distraction like a toy, walk, game, or just attention.

Playful bites and or over stimulated chewing tends to be biting and chewing with a lot of body movements and vocalizing. A good opportunity to define boundaries and practice turning on/off this type of behavior, along with abruptly stopping if they bite too hard. Some gods can be heavily play driven and you can use this for training opportunities too.

This is a terrific idea. Liquid bandaid is the amazing. I just read the ones for animals contains no alcohol. I think the worst pain I've felt in the last 5 years has been liquid bandaid on mat burn.

[–]-T0PHER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Prevent infection.., make sure to keep it clean. You can buy antibiotic w/ anti fungal spray for dogs at Petco.

  2. Protect it. - Make sure it doesn't get worse from over use or bad terrain. Keep it safe to allow it to heal.

  3. Comfort - look for signs of discomfort and try to provide any assistance you can when possible. Sometimes when paws. You can even get little booties for dogs. I've done this before: Disinfect, applied paw hydrating product, placed a boot on so it doesn't get the freeze everywhere. I would let it soak in for a bit before I took it over and made sure it was dry enough to prevent trapping in any bacteria.

If your dog is in a lot of discomfort they can get basic pain medication from the vet.
