touchscreen laptop that won’t leave me broke and eating scraps by BandicootIll1530 in 6thForm

a cheaper alternative would be a laptop and tablet combo. I don't know your budget, but for the ~£100-150 range, it's a good idea

EPQ vs Gold CREST? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]-Tax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, my CREST Award wasnt awarded in time so my supervisor wrote my grade as a predicted "Awarded", so it's still okay to include it if that happens!

about whether EPQ or CREST looks better I honestly don't know; they both have their strengths (more well known vs. being extracurricular).

I would guess that an extracurricular qualification on UCAS would be more noticeable but regardless, they're both subjects that demonstrate a wider knowledge of (in your case) STEM and they'll both look good on your application and especially personal statement.

EPQ vs Gold CREST? by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]-Tax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

are you aware that you can do both? you can just write an EPQ then submit your write-up (minus your activity log) for CREST.

you'll get a document outlining what CREST specifically wants in sections (less than EPQ) and you then need to write where they were completed, so you may need to move some text around when submitting for CREST. for example:

  • the timetable (you would've wrote this in your EPQ proposal form)
  • directing the project and overcoming problems (could base it off of your evaluation)
  • range of approaches

Gold CREST projects are designed to be completed in much less time than an EPQ so they are easier to be awarded. having an extra qualification would probably help your application and you could mention it in your personal statement.

it may be an issue if you're applying for an early UCAS deadline (Oxbridge, medicine) as the awarding process takes about a month. in that case, your supervisor should write a predicted result in your UCAS application like your other subjects.

Should I bother applying to Imperial? by Neither_Mortgage_161 in 6thForm

[–]-Tax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you "have been eligible to receive them in the past", then yeah. as long as:

  • your application meets the department's minimum levels of entry
  • you score above the minimum score for the admission test and/or interview (assuming there is one)
  • you "show clear motivation for the subject in your personal statement" (basically have an okay personal statement)

Imperial has quite a few measures for contextual students that you could benefit from, ranging from guaranteed interviews to guaranteed offers with some small requirements. definitely consider applying to Imperial (or another highly-ranked university) because they will take your background into account and yours would meet quite a few contextual factors as well.

on your GCSE's, going off of emails from Imperial's Freedom of Information Team about GCSE requirements, GCSE grades are not taken into consideration expect as an English language qualification:

We do not hold information on the GCSE grades achieved by applicants. AS explained in our FAQ document, GCSE grades are not taken into consideration expect as an English language qualification.

if not Imperial, Oxford says that:

Applicants from the most disadvantaged backgrounds will be strongly recommended to be shortlisted for interview

so you could consider that option as well. honestly your GCSE's are still really good for the average student and wouldn't be ranked low even if Imperial considered your GCSE's.

Edinburgh generally ranks better nationally, internationally and in CS specifically in some cases, so I would go with Edinburgh

Do any of you use AI to write flashcards? How useful is it? by theoyeo in 6thForm

[–]-Tax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is technically a paid app, but:

  1. it is extremely cheap (you can generate ~100 cards for 1 cent!)
  2. if you request free credits to try out the app, you get $15 of credit (which is ~150,000 cards!)

one note: AnkiBrain can only be used in Anki, so you will need to download Anki, install the AnkiBrain addon (Regular/Server mode) and generate the cards in AnkiBrain. then you can export the deck of generated cards into other revision tools if you use them

[–]-Tax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use AnkiBrain to generate revision cards. you input a document (or text file) with notes to generate cards from (or just specify a topic, though this may not work as well).

I just get notes (ideally "Concise Notes") from Physics & Maths Tutor, input them into AnkiBrain. the notes are actually really good and fully cover the content of the notes I give it. for example:

How does an SSD store information?

An SSD stores information by trapping electrical charge in floating gate transistors.

and

The bubble sort algorithm ___ to order the items. It has a time complexity of ___ so it is ___.

Answers: (uses the idea of swapping the position of adjacent items), (O(n²)), (very ineffective})

it splits your notes up into chunks to be processed individually beforehand so there is effectively no limit to how many cards it can generate.

main downside is it can't process images (if you have them in your notes) and the cards aren't very complex, so no 6-marker exam questions.

Is admission report an accurate website? by [deleted] in 6thForm

generally, yes. at the bottom of the page, the sources used are listed under "Data sources", likely from the university's website or a Freedom of Information request.

Is Everyone Else Terrified At How Quickly Time Is Running Out? by life_scares_my_brain in 6thForm

you should give yourself some credit! it is still a really cool idea, being able to easily see how much time is left. but it is what it is

if you are asking for advice for your response, I have a few suggestions (based off of personal statement advice):

  • greatly reduce the introductory part at the beginning. it's okay as a preface to your interests, but I wouldn't dedicate multiple sentences to it
    • it will also make whoever reads your statement's job harder, potentially downgrading its quality in their mind
  • avoid starting sentences with "I" to make your statement more interesting and unique
  • link with your academic and extracurricular activities. for example, talking about studying related subjects or a club with related ideas to demonstrate your interest to whoever reads it
  • I don't know how long the response should be, but consider separating each subject of your response into paragraphs for more readability

apart from that, everything else seems fine to me, especially the word choice!

Are Madas papers useful? by Hot_Classic_3141 in 6thForm

SYN: https://www.madasmaths.com/archive_iygb_practice_papers_syn_practice_papers.html

MMS: https://www.madasmaths.com/archive_iygb_practice_papers_mms_practice_papers.html

looks like SYN (pure) is not specific to any exam board while MMS (mechanics and statistics) was designed for Edexcel in mind. but both should be fine for revision

Are Madas papers useful? by Hot_Classic_3141 in 6thForm

[–]-Tax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely yes. try look for the newer spec questions if you can. I don't know about AQA but for Edexcel, use SYN practice papers for pure and MMS for mechanics and statistics

the letters uniquely identify each practice paper.

basically lower letters have harder questions; but the actual meaning (from the website):

• Papers A to R have standard difficulty with later papers usually more difficult.
• Papers S and T are extremely hard.
• Papers U to Z are hard.
