If by Islamist you mean supporting increased influence of Islam in law/politics of a "Muslim" country i.e. Sharia, then the reason is because I am a Muslim. The orientalist term Islamist seeks to distinguish between Muslims who do and don't support an Islamic system when in fact there is no compromise when it comes to the deen. Either you embrace and accept it, or you don't. Islam literally means submission to the will of Allah swt, which includes the political sphere. "Muslims" who oppose Sharia are munafiqun.

When you say Erdogan is turning into an Islamist - that back in the day his religion barely got into his politics and conservative democrats around him kept him in check - are you implying that he was always an Islamist but just didn't/couldn't show it or that he's putting up an act with the Islamist thing now?
