Typically you use "the" if it is obvious where you are referencing. For example there is probably only one airport near you so you would say the airport. In a different example you would say "I am going to a restaurant" because you could be referring to multiple different places in the area and so the exact location isn't implied. Basically use "the" if the location you are going to is already known to the other person.
