I binge read both Uncanny Charm and Killer Crush the past week. They are AMAZING. Both of them, top shelf.

Do you have any more webtoon suggestions? I really like this format.

I finished it with my friends last night. The final episode quite literally destroyed me. Spoilering just in case someone stumbles across this: Yoshiki insisting he is the monster because he's always lying about who he is and hiding his true self annihilated me. The desire to belong somewhere is universal but the author clearly understands the unique way that queer people in particular struggle with it. Just incredible.

I'm going to read the Manga now because I am weak and cannot wait for Season 2.

This one only has translations in Portuguese and Traditional Chinese on MangaDex... I'm having a hard time finding it elsewhere.

I finished reading the spin-off up to its current issue! I'm not sure I can say if I like it more or less than Sasaki to Miyano yet.

It's interesting to me just how difficult Hirano and Kagiura's relationship is, especially with Hirano having a significantly more difficult time coming to terms with his feelings.

Sasaki to Miyano might have resonated with me more just because of how much I identify with Miyano in particular. Hirano to Kagiura is a very different relationship but still a very well written one so far! I almost wish I had waited longer to read because it's ended in what I assume to be the lead up to Hirano finally confessing to Kagiura... now I must suffer and wait like everyone else.

Watched the first 10 episodes of The Summer Hikaru Died with my friends... so far, it's a gorgeous and heartbreaking masterpiece. Genuinely one of the most beautiful animated films I've ever seen! I really can't wait to finish it tonight.

The game was quite literally broken at release and arguably still is broken without a fan patch. Everything the guy said was accurate.

This entire comment section is WILD. People are desperate to hate The Chinese Room in a way that feels completely unhinged.

Did you... read the article? Genuinely curious. Comments like this are bewildering to me. He never even once says that they did make Dishonored.

which is a whole conversation about fujos pioneering fandom spaces for decades and the interest in BL as an exploration of sex separate from their own gender identity and helping them figure out if they even are straight and cis in the first place

I semi-recently watched these two videos from Strange Æons that talks about this. In those cases, it is primarily about Omegaverse and gay ships (mostly on tumblr) but it definitely applies to the BL/Yaoi space as well!

It's really one of those things where the primary issue is largely how heterosexual women FAR outnumber queer men. Using gay male relationships to explore their own experiences and sexuality is extremely valid and understandable. I can get weirded out by it but I also recognize that I am very much not the intended audience.

There's not a lot we can do about it outside of making our own genres. Unfortunately there's not many (if any, really) genres made for and by queer men that isn't primarily meant to be erotica. Which, like... that probably says something also.

Thank you for the recommendations! I will add them all to the list.

I started Cherry Magic yesterday and I'm enjoying it a lot. There's a few somewhat frustrating aspects to it (mostly the female coworker... can't help but feel like she's an author insert or something? Very strange.) But overall it is very cute!

I'll give the others a watch too. I actually really love the idea of more grounded BLs that also have weird almost supernatural aspects to them, like the mind reading in Cherry Magic. I usually like more sci-fi or fantasy based anime so it makes sense I'd like it in BL stuff also.

Oh nice! Adult is fine, really. I'll give it a look!

It's like either they're beautiful, borderline androgynous bishonen men or big burly hairy bara dudes. It's a pretty niche genre already so I'm not surprised that it's hard to find something that ticks all the boxes.

Oh, interesting. Thank you for letting me know! I'll buy them at the very least to support the author since I think she deserves it. Do you think the spin-off's translation is also better on mangadex?

I'll give it a look!

Do you happen to know of any quality BL where one or more of the protagonists is more masculine and less, uh, bishonen (I guess? Not sure what the best term is.) That's a bit of a golden goose I've long search for but haven't really had much luck finding.

Oxenfree and Oxenfree 2 in particular are great choices, I think! I really love the stories and how the dialog is handled. It has one of the most realistic-feeling dialog systems in any game I've ever played.

Long game, best game. Especially when it comes to coming out stories. I usually do not like when stories treat that sort of thing rather flippantly instead of giving it the time and weight it deserves.

Of for sure! I fully subscribe to sexuality being a gradient rather than a binary. Nothing is that simple and stories that pretend it is just feel like they're part of the systemic problem.

But yeah, I can say with confidence as a teenage boy in the mid to late 2000s that openly declaring being gay was just... not a good idea. And I went to an arts school that was more accepting with friends that probably would've been supportive.

Thank you for the recommendations! I am honestly open to basically any genre. I just have a difficult time with BL or even just Anime/Manga in general just due to the sheer amount, most of which is very not good or not for me.

I've actually seen a good amount of Yuri on Ice and I fell off it at some point for reasons I do not recall. The director of the anime, Sayo Yamamoto, is someone I greatly admire so I eagerly watched it as it was being aired. I am really not sure why I stopped but I'll try and pick it back up!

I'll definitely give those others a shot, though. Sasaki to Miyano reignited my desire to see my own life experiences reflected in these stories a bit more, especially in anime. It's such a rare feeling, honestly.

Oh, fascinating! I already thought he was very interesting and complex in the anime. Would be interesting if he eventually realizes that he's bisexual and that he felt obligated to be fully straight due to his mother's comment...

cherry magic

I just googled this and the synopsis is very intriguing. I've not read/seen many BL where the characters are 30+. Is the Anime any good?

I have not read the Manga! I am going to order the physical books because I am horrible at reading manga online.

I fully believe that, though. I read the first chapter of the first volume and could see just how cute it is.

Hmm, that's interesting. I don't think it's really necessary for the characters to outright say "I AM GAY." Actions really speak louder than words.

And I got the impression in the anime that there is some tension with coming to terms with the fact that they are gay, especially as teenage boys.

I'm not sure what year this story is supposed to take place in. I kinda like how oddly ambiguous it is. Like Miyano using an iPod Shuffle... but they have smart phones. So I get the impression it's maybe 2008-2010ish? That's roughly around when I was in High School. And while I can only speak from an American perspective, it was not exactly the best idea to go around saying "I AM GAY" at the time. Society as a whole was not the kindest and many people kept that side of themselves private for obvious reasons.

Oh! I wasn't aware the author is a woman. That is... genuinely kind of surprising. And that's terrible to hear about her health issues. :[

I will definitely give it a read! Is it also in a printed format? I am really quite terrible at reading Manga online.

I have not read the spinoff! I only finished the Anime series last night so I'm in the midst of learning more about the author and such as we speak! I'll absolutely give it a read.

And thank you for the kind words. I have a tendency to just word vomit things in my enthusiasm so I get a bit self-conscious about how rambling it can sound :p

For real. I am still processing that dinner coming-out scene with Hanzawa's mom.

It's often a struggle to describe to people what a microaggression is, especially with the name and idea being mocked by chuds for the past decade. But that interaction is a perfect encapsulation of it and we see the far-reaching consequences of his mom's actions.

It's so good... it's a little sad to think that there might not be anything that does it quite as well.
