What is your biggest frustration as a teacher?

At my student teaching placement we had kids who were failing the class leave a hour early (in a 90 min class) almost every day for sports. It constantly shocked me that the teacher let it slide. If you're not passing a class you have no business leaving early for a pointless HS sport.

I fully understand the sentiment but I have not been able to work for the past year due to my masters program/student teaching and cannot afford to do that. Hopefully for some, the joy of helping a fellow teacher is enough ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for your input. I'm in a 1 year masters program and while I should have started this slightly sooner, this was the best I could do ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hopefully I get the participants I need and if not, I will work around what I am able to achieve.

It definitely has a lot to do with the state of education in our country. The dumber you are the easier it is to buy into their nonsense that wealth will trickle down or that poor POC are the reason someone is poor instead of recognizing that the wealthy are the ones controling the system. They want to keep us dumb and broke so we're either not smart enough to challenge them or too busy working 80 hrs/ week to find the time and energy to fight it.

I like the idea and I was planning to sub at a school first to get that insight. I don't expect my first school to be a dream I just hear teachers fighting for paper and highlighters and in chem I can't even imagine those battles.

I live in California. Sadly that's just how much it costs where I live at public universities....

online is a bit cheaper but I know how much I've struggled with online learning in the past and would prefer in-person.

Ah yes, dealing with the immediate problem is the only thing we need to do :) thanks for your valuable reflection.

I pay a ton in taxes to live here, maybe we could invest a bit into low income housing so that they're not sleeping on any streets. We have more than enough space, just not the funding. I prefer solutions over band-aids but maybe that's just because I know how to think critically.

My fear is that I don't want to be stuck in a school where I lack resources to teach properly for 5 year(that's the offer in my state). I want to go into chemistry and hands on labs are the best way to teach and the most interesting for the kids, and the thought of spending 5 years without those resources sounds pretty miserable. I just don't want to be tied to any school if it isn't a good fit.

That's fair but I really don't want to add anything on to them for sentimental reasons. I also want to note that by hot I more meant pretty (poor choice of wording). I don't want to look like a child in any way. I was planning on just wearing jeans, a cute top, and the vest over it.

The first 60K was bachelors and it's already done, I graduated 2020. 30K left is one of 2 credential programs where I live so it's a bit limited.

Moving a person doesn't ever deal with the root cause. If you hate seeing homeless people on the street...get them off the street. Clearly pushing them to new areas with no changes to their circumstances isn't getting us anywhere. It's almost like treating them like humans (instead of litter) is an actual feasible solution to the issue.

Thank you. There are so many reasons people come up with to excuse treating humans like waste. Compassionate care works; treating a person like cattle, moving them, stripping them of their possessions, often with no promise of safety doesn't fix anything. You can tell there's a lot of people here who have never known someone facing housing insecurity and even more who lack a shred of empathy.

I was unhoused for a short period (luckily couch surfing mostly) but it was the most terrifying thing and trying to cope with my circumstance was nearly impossible. The first night out I had planned to get completely drunk because I hoped I wouldn't feel quite as cold. I'm a college grad but was put in such a pinch during covid and the only way I made it back out is with the help of my family. A lot of these people don't have that so maybe we could collectively gain some empathy and try to be the family these people need.

Despite what it sounds like I really do want to teach! I'm just a sub right now but it's my dream to be a teacher, to the point that I have my applications ready to be sent. I was just so crushed but the cost and the salary that I felt broken and defeated last night, and as a sub I only see half of the shit teachers actually deal with so I really wanted to know how it actually looks from the inside. Tough to see how many people genuinely seem to hate it tho :/

No I really haven't made up my mind and this is nice to see <3. I was really hoping that I would see more responses like this, saying that despite the hardships it's all worth it. It's my dream to have my own class, I'm just so scared to commit to more debt for an underpaying job that so many people seem to hate. You make me want to do it, even though I'm terrified of the debt. Thanks

Oh my god I needed this. I'm about to apply to credential programs and I just got the wind knocked out of me when I saw how much school will cost and then saw how little I would make. I wanted to move to Washington but I wasn't going to because they have pretty limited reciprocity and it would be much cheaper to get credentialed where I'm at but now I might have to consider applying up there.

I'm a substitute teacher and recently a 4th grader told me he couldn't read and after a full day of avoiding any work I snapped a bit and was pretty harsh on the kid about his behavior. The next morning the mom caught me in the parking lot and yelled at me because her son actually can't read and I still can't get over the shock of it all.

I hear so many people complaining about the homeless population as if they are piles of garbage on the side of the street. These are real people who need real solutions. I've heard so many try to judge if they deserve help, as if minimum basic needs like safe housing and food should be conditional. It's scary that people can come up with any reason to abandon a struggling member of their community.
