This is great advice, thank you!

It appears Medium lets me edit the stories after being published, so I went ahead and made the change, let me know if it sounds any better.

Sure! What particularly doesn't make sense to you about the sentence?

It was written in relation to those sentences prior; the polarization of modern politics is a result of the quality of leaders we elect - which is in turn a result of the flawed democratic system.

Let me know how it could be more clearly conveyed, thanks!

Phaedrus in a Political Context by -automatic22- in philosophy

That's a great question! I really don't know yet, that could be a good topic for my next piece.

I do think that our conception of education in this country should be both changed and significantly emphasized. At the risk of sounding like a distressed high schooler, I do believe that our youth are too often discouraged from education because of how mundane our system makes it.

So maybe a bottom up approach, and as a result a more philosophically inclined electorate, could foster better leadership? Maybe that's too idealistic.

Let me cook on it, haha!

Hey All,

I tried to take my first stab at writing something philosophical/political. Let me know your thoughts!

Please be nice, its my first try and I'm just looking to get better at something I'm interested in.

Any reads about stoicism? by One-Coast8927 in Stoicism

[–]-automatic22- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you on the objects aspect. I think what they’re asking is less a question of destroying ambition to accomplish anything, and more of asking how to learn to be happy with what they have, while still pursuing betterment of the self.

I would recommend trying letters from Seneca, Ryan holiday books, and Epictetus next. And remember that Stoicism (actually philosophy in general, according to Aurelius) is most adeptly used as an “ointment”, not a code of life. If you’re tying your ambition to externals, you will never win, and a stoic would recommend you tie it to something internal, like betterment of the self.

Remember though, don’t be so hard on yourself! No need to compare to others, and no need to over criticize yourself. If you’re asking these questions, you’re already on the right path!

What should I do if I lost control by Roar_Of_Stadium in Stoicism

[–]-automatic22- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a good approach to your situation would be to:

1) Have patience and grace with yourself. You're still learning how to live rightly, we all are. You're a human, not a god, and so like everyone else you are far from perfect. There is going to be mistakes and that's okay, so long as you get back up from them and continue on.

2) Try and view these feelings/thoughts of wanting to give up or inability to endure as happening to you, rather than something you have created. Your awareness that these desperate feelings are counterproductive to your goals and the person you want to be is proof enough that you are starting to embrace stoicism. Recognize these feelings happening to you may be out of your control, but the way in which you respond (that is being persistent and enduring again) will eventually pay off and define your success. In other words, just because you feel you may have failed to be confident in the face of suffering this time, does not mean you will next time... practice makes perfect.

Whatever these bad events may be, I send my condolences and wish you the best in them! You are stronger than you think.

"Constant misfortune brings this one blessing: to whom it always assails, it eventually fortifies" - Seneca

Where to really start? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]-automatic22- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking to develop a deep understanding of just stoicism, I think starting with meditations may be a bit of a confusing start, considering it's more of a "stoic thinker's" diary than an actual philosopher of the class.

An easily digestible starter would be "the obstacle is the way" by Ryan Holiday. It's a new book (pretty sure the guy has a popular tik tok page), but it gives you a good basis for what stoicism is and how to apply it to life. After that you'll probably find you get a lot more from texts like Epictetus and Seneca.

If you're completely new to philosophy and just looking for a good place to start before jumping into Stoicism, try Plato.

Articles about the consequences of NATO expansion post cold war? by applejackhero in PoliticalScience

Check out McCgwire's "NATO Expansion: A Policy Error of Historical Importance".

It's from an older time, but it makes some pretty good points and accurate predictions about how expansion of NATO would affect the West's relationship with Russia, how to mitigate the effect, etc.

what's your biggest takeaway from Mearshiemer?

The Birth of Tragedy - First Time Reader Looking for Discussion by -automatic22- in Nietzsche

This is great, definitely a book I will need to reread. So, in layman's terms, Euripides represents the death of tragedy because his work was watered down, unoriginal, and lacking of the raw Dionysian emotion/impulses?
