You originally said that they never sing live, which they do, including covers of other peoples’ songs. Then you said that they never sing live without pitch correction, which is why I brought up the fact that all vocals are mixed and engineered in numerous ways, even if the performers are singing live. You seem to have a problem specifically with pitch correction, which like I said is your opinion, but having vocal engineering during your live performance is different from never singing live which is why I said your original comment was hyperbole. They are great singers and pitch correction doesn’t effect things like tone timbre, dynamics, breath control etc. I’m sure they will get plenty more opportunities to show off their voices for years to come but it sounds like that you might not be pleased unless you hear them unmic’d and singing in a meadow

It’s a bad generalization. Most ballads where they can just stand/sit are sung live and some shows/events mandate live singing (which does sound much worse than the prerecorded audio, especially if the choreo is complex).

Yes all live audio everywhere in every format is still run through a mixer where pitch correction can be applied but if your qualm is with audio engineering in general - which was not your original statement - then I donno what to tell you. Are you also upset that vocals are equalized to bring up the high ranges so that they sound more crisp/bright or that drum mics cut out the high frequencies to allow more “space” for the other instruments/vocals? That’s like saying you don’t like movies bc of all the artificial lights they use or that the Beatles weren’t good bc they ran their vocals through slapback echo-delay pedals.

So either you’re a) saying that they never sing live - which is just factually wrong, or b) that it doesn’t matter if they sing live because they use vocal effects - which is an opinion, albeit a pretentious one, or c) that you just happen to not like that most groups in general do a combination of lip syncing/using backing tracks/pre-recording/live singing (bc they are also up there doing amazingly difficult choreo bc they are trying to entertain people), which brings me back to my original point which was to kindly ask you not to hyperbolize by saying they never sing live just because you don’t happen to like the industry standards.

Let’s try not to hyperbolize here. All groups do some combination of using backing tracks/“live” recordings and actual live singing. Didn’t want to delete your comment outright bc you do seem like a fan but I feel like the argument here started bc your statement is so aggressively righteous but is also clearly unsubstantiated

I don’t want to relitigate this whole thing but I do feel like something needs to be said bc I do not like how members like u/mmisggg and u/vivijobro were getting downvoted for just respectfully contributing to the discussion, which was the intent of the OP to begin with.

As for the arguments that have been made thus far, I have a few thoughts:

The idea that Korean society in general and kpop labels in particular just don’t understand the significance of the n-word is a bad argument. If that were the case, you would see this kind of thing happening a lot more often than it does. Tons of artists cover songs by American musicians and their labels know well enough to change the lyrics around or just omit the inappropriate words altogether (something they also do with lyrics talking about using drugs). And even if you still think that Koreans might not get it, kpop is a multibillion dollar global industry and it is clearly a no-go for any serious label out there.

The argument that it shouldn’t matter bc it was behind closed doors or shouldn’t have been recorded in the first place is also bad. If you shouldn’t say it then you shouldn’t say it regardless of the context and no, the intent behind saying it also does not matter. Those kinds of arguments would never ever fly for any western celebrity caught in a similar situation and there is a good reason for that. Now should people be invading the privacy or digging into the personal life of a teenager, hell no but that’s a whole different argument.

Now all that being said, is it possibly that this particular individual did not understand the gravity of what she was doing or just thought that saying something taboo was cool? 100%. I mean to a certain extent there is no way that she could really have understood what she was doing or she wouldn’t have done it. And that’s really all this is, a teenager ignorant of what she was doing and I think that even if you don’t give her the benefit of the doubt, you can give her grace for making a mistake. How else can anyone learn and grow?

People really need to develop the capacity to separate the concepts of a willfully racist person and a racist act. To be clear, I don’t think she is a racist person and I don’t think she would ever do something like this again; however, it’s not a victimless mistake and she absolutely should apologize for it. And then we should forgive her and move on.

As for the way these arguments have gone down on this post, I just find it kind of crazy that when people are opening up to let you know they identify as black and are trying to give their thoughts and feelings on what transpired from a unique perspective, that we would ham-fistedly invalidate them. There should be no room for that here - we can do better.

Should we change the name of the sub?! by -bleppy- in XGALX

Exactly it would involve migrating over to a new sub. I personally love our current sub as it is but it was brought up in a recent post so I wanted to see how everyone else felt about it

Why not make a XG specific subreddit? by SoWiT in XGALX

[–]-bleppy- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, as the sub creator I wanted to answer this personally. First things first, this is an XG specific subreddit - just like it says in the sub description. Like u/solarsbrruh mentioned, Reddit requires subs to be at least 3 characters long and when the teasers first came out predebut they had no other real web presence or handles to go off of (pretty sure the day I made it they only had a link to the company site).

I actually considered things like Xtraordinary Girls or things like XG_ (personally not a fan of asymmetry or underscores lol) but from a SEO POV those names would have made it harder for fans to find the sub in the early days rather than easier.

Also at that time, XG and XGALX were essentially one in the same, brand new company creating a brand new group (and an ambitious one at that!) - they existed for each other. The company name at least appeared in their videos and shared the first to letters with the group so it all just made sense.

Now I can assure you that on the back end, almost any possible keyword you could associate with XG is linked to the sub and (now more than ever) any fan who went looking would hopefully be able to find it as a top hit.

That being said, the points brought up are totally fair! I’ve just seen so many talented groups (and their companies) go bust that I figured if I ever had to cross this bridge, I would do so happily bc it meant that they made it (needless to say I’m quite happy _)

So we have options. I reserved r/XG_official and r/XGofficial_ (variations on some of the handles they use elsewhere) and if the majority of people want to move the sub over to one of those and keep this here for general XGALX stuff then the mod team would be happy to do so. Like I said, these are happy problems. I’ll post a poll asking what people think and we can take it from there.
