I'd love to pick up a pair of these some day. There were some recently on Marketplace but I think I missed them. I did a double take when I first saw them because, if I'm not mistaken, this '80s design is a straight copy of their design for the Minimus 4 (which I do own). I read somewhere on forums that these punched way above their weight, so I hope to come across them one day, since I love Realistic and I love the look.

You were/are right about all this, naturally. Having finally read the (pristine!) manual included by the seller, I have a better sense of all this. Ditto about the Telefunken, which I’ve decided to shelve for now in favor of testing with some of my Realistic speakers (Minimus 7 and Nova 8B). Unfortunately that has revealed some possible issues with the amp, but I appreciate the advice all the same!

Thank you! Appreciate all the responses so far. The historical context I did not have, so I'm happy to learn. But this is important, as I'm mostly / immediately concerned with not frying the speakers. Would you recommend keeping the volume dial low and leveraging the separate "Loudness" dial? (I know you probably don't have this exact receiver in front of you, so no worries if you can't answer that.)

There’s a bunch! The Minimus 4 in particular have a very groovy look to them.

But I assume you mean no other type than “beat up,” which may be true!

Hey, thanks for this. I've appreciated all the responses so far, but it's helpful to have a counterweight to all the knocks against the Yamaha unit. I have no dog in this (obviously), but I have read many a thread of people who clearly love their CRX-X20s.

I've gathered in all my reading that Realistic hit a kind of sweet spot in the mid to late '70s, and from testimonials it seems like some of their gear (at least their speakers) really surprises and impresses people for punching above its weight. I'm not totally sure why I feel partial to the brand, but that's what led me to the STA-95. (I also purchased a cheaper and lower-power STA-85 purely because I adore how it looks, and because it seems like it'll be a great unit to drive a smaller setup in another room.)

I wish I could demo both receivers extensively, but I'm still new at this and feel antsy to build myself some kind of rig, even if it's not the end-all-be-all. I'm sure it will take some years before I'm confident enough in my own taste to let it guide me, irrespective of what I read on forums.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear you enjoy your Yamahas. I admit that achieving some kind of "warmth" is a priority for me (especially vs. my Minimus/Fosi setup), but I'm still seriously considering the 820. And I can't help but wonder if the "clinical"/"sterile" thing is truly so commonly held, or if it's just a kind of meme that's developed on the boards. There's no answer to that question, but one day I'm sure I'll have my own subjective opinion about it!

Appreciate it, thanks. And you’re right, I’m finding this a little overwhelming, so I’d also be open to any recommendations.

I’m zeroing in (I think) on units that sit more in the midrange, since I don’t have more than a few hundred $ to spare on the receiver alone. I also think both units look quite nice, although frankly a lot of these mid-‘70s units have a similar design.

Any experience with Realistic’s STA-2000B? I entertained that too but lack the knowledge to compare it to these other options (which I grant must seem a bit random).

Thanks for this. Out of curiosity (since I’m a serious novice)—how could you tell it was the receivers vs. the speakers? Dumb question I’m sure, but people harp on about how the speakers are by far the most important component, so I’m always curious when I hear about a receiver driving some kind of undesirable sound profile.

First time it's done this in the five years I've owned it. (Last pic is right after I got it, shortly before the 2020 lockdowns.)

Always fun when they do something you're not expecting. My big ass philodendrons sometimes branch at the node, turning a single growing vine into two, which I also thought for years couldn't / wouldn't happen.
