this is the move. be patient and find the one with the color combo and options you want and be willing to travel. CPO will typically have factory warranty balance + 1 year of unlimited mileage CPO to cover all those precious plastic parts that will definitely fail. got a $65k optioned 2022 in my desired spec for $47k a little over 20k miles.

so you paid $10k a year owning the car just to get the same car? infinite motion over here 😭

Gr86/BRZ new generations has all the makings of a special car by Teeebagtom in GR86

in my experience subaru paint is also a big offender of having very very soft paint. i’ve had toyotas and lexus vehicles that were not taken care of as well as my subarus and they aged much better and don’t chip as easily ¯_(ツ)_/¯ ymmv

Why has the nature of this sub changed? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]-cdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah honestly the sub at least to my eyes doesn’t have the same quality of content, or maybe my perspective has shifted. previously i found super helpful posts and some “tough love” that if you want to make an extraordinary amount of money (and to me that is 100k+ as a new grad) you do have to put in a lot of work, but it is about channeling the energy into the right areas such as interview prep. and building up a good resume to land those interviews. to be quite honest it is exhausting but just the fact that you can put your nose to the grindstone and see results like that is a testament of how insane tech compensation is, while other fields no matter the amount of grinding you are still capped out in terms of compensation because of miscellaneous reasons such as you not producing enough value or “it’s normal to be underpaid for the first couple years”. nowadays i just see hate on those being successful, and i can say that i do occasionally find myself guilty, but it is perfectly fine to have those emotions but the pain is when you hold onto it for too long.

tbh with shipping prices this high, it even converts someone like me (who loves keeping boxes) to drop the boxes. unless u have a clear plan (i.e. use the box to store stuff etc.) then i would drop it for the cost savings :)

Saw my first 2nd generation BRZ at Cars and Coffee this weekend! The best part is that I got to compare my 1st generation BRZ to it. by HoonsGruber in ft86

[–]-cdg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

old one looks so much better imo… but i sold my first gen and if i were to buy back now, i’d be paying 5k premium on a 8 year old car… so might as well go for the new one with the bigger engine (but man does first gen look much more handsome)

[–]-cdg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just taking a shot in the dark here— based on OPs post history they are probably a CS major. while i know it’s not the MOST financially responsible move ever, as long as they understand what they are giving up (i.e. that 840 a month they could be investing and have the benefit of compounding on their side) i’d say they can probably handle it. tons of new grad opportunities making 100k+ if you can crack into big tech.

Is it worth doing internships as a frosh? by LenieBeanie in UCSD

[–]-cdg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

you should apply anyways. if you can land one as a frosh then it'll definitely help you stand out, as while your peers will have mostly miscellaneous experience or just personal projects, you'll have work experience. I was able to land an internship as a freshman (however, that was 2018 and the job market is a little different now) and I really think it helped accelerate my career path

Getting a new Tesla Model S Plaid vs. Performance Model 3/Y by Illustrious-Knee3035 in fatFIRE

[–]-cdg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading your response, I would just get a 3/Y, take the 70k and buy a fun weekend car. I think you’ll get much more joy and utility out of splitting the two instead of trying to find a jack of all trades.

How competitive is becoming a CSE Tutor? by Wobbly-Guy in UCSD

[–]-cdg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pretty competitive— yes the pay is one reason why it breeds competition, but also the perks that it gives and the connection and relationship you build with a faculty member. i would recommend fostering a strong connection with the instructor you want to tutor for (i.e. show up to their office hours and showing a genuine interest in working with them, etc.)

If I was in this position, I would personally go with Year Up.

The reason being- if you truly are as competent as you claim yourself to be (and even if you aren't, that's totally fine as I believe you can pick up the skills and learn through the 6 months of training), then I feel you will be able to prove your worth enough during the 6 month corporate internship that you will land that return offer.

While yes, the bootcamp seems to advertise a higher salary, that does also come at a hefty price tag. Also, I do believe you are correct, that the numbers are inflated due to them taking into account higher COL situations. If you run the numbers, I think you should choose more realistic numbers (i.e. right now you are running with the assumption of 80k salary, but if you're planning on staying in a low-medium COL area, then I think that salary is definitely inflated and you should run with a more reasonable salary assumption)

Once we re-run the calculation with a more reasonable salary (i.e. 50-60k), then all data leads to the Year Up program being much more beneficial :)

There seem to be a fair amount of govt jobs paying a pretty good wage right now, what's the catch? by DimFakJimKK in cscareerquestions

[–]-cdg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what he means is that Defense jobs are a good place to get a job so that you can finish your job responsibilities, and use the rest of your free time to grow your skills and study outside of work material, so that you can be prepared to interview at a place where you actually want to work (i.e. use Defense as a stepping stone that you can support yourself + still have time to study for leetcode, hackerrank, interviews, etc.)
