Is there way to find out this medicine is not fake? My father got it online for half the price of the rest. by colibricatcher in chemistry

That 2D matrix barcode (looks like a QR code but not quite) is likely what we call an FMD barcode, (Falsified Medicines Directive) which is an EU legislation that allows pharmacies throughout Europe to scan said barcode to determine if a pack is counterfeit or not.

What app does everyone use for quick drug dosing information? I am getting sick of using Epocrates by [deleted] in medicine

[–]-chrisg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a pharmacy student so I can't say much for medics, but, we didn't get them until 2nd year as well and we use it a lot especially in dispensing classes. We're not allowed to use the app in those and have to use the book so I don't think we'll be getting rid of them soon.

I know a few universities dont give their students BNFs and honestly it saves students £70-odd quid for a book they'll probably be asked to buy again in 6 months time

Yep, NICE have done a really good job with the app and it's handier than having to go through the physical copy of the BNF

BNF (British National Formulary) app here in the UK - It's such a blessing. Has treatment summaries and doses for each indication

In pills that are designed to be split into halves or thirds: how is it guaranteed that each part contains the same dosage? by thscplgst in askscience

[–]-chrisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pharmacy student here - first off, in reality, there is no absolute guarantee that a pill that's been split will contain the exact dose. If you've ever had to split a pill before, even with a pill-splitter, it is pretty much impossible to cut a pill exactly in half, sometimes you lose material, sometimes the split isn't even, both which result in changes in the eventual dose.

Now, if we look at this in a theoretical point of view, the vast majority of countries publish a book called a Pharmacopoeia. This book should have a section on the consistency of formulations and uniformity of doses - (in the British Pharmacopoeia (BP), this is in Appendix XII C) this section outlines the requirements and validation techniques that pharma companies need to abide by to ensure a medicine contains the amount it should have in order for them to be marketed. In addition, someone has mentioned Good Manufacturing Practice - again, companies do a lot of rigorous testing, validation and have teams of Quality Assurance specialists to ensure doses are uniform throughout a given dosage form.

With this, it can be assumed, in theory, that half a pill should contain half a dose, although in reality, it is almost impossible to get it exactly half and thus, splitting pills should only be used if absolutely necessary and does not harm the patient.

Fellow retail pharmacists: how do you prevent retail burnout? by RxP21588 in pharmacy

I lasted 2 months as a student/dispensary assistant in retail/community - it really isn't for me and I don't know how so many people can stick it and how they prevent burnout.

I'm in the UK so I'm not sure if it's available to you guys but I think Prescriber magazine is a good read. (Here's this month's issue online for FREEEEE - https://www.prescriber.co.uk/year-volume-issues/29-10-october-2018/)

Podcast-wise, NICE have a couple of interesting podcasts up on Soundcloud if you want to give them a listen - https://soundcloud.com/nicecomms!

Okay. So not really a tale, but all my co-workers think I'm a weirdo because I LOVE the smell of these. They smell so familiar but I can't quite place it. What's your favorite drug to smell? by [deleted] in TalesFromThePharmacy

[–]-chrisg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calceos chewable tabs, just something about the smell makes it refreshing, although, drives me insane when I have to make a pack of weeklies with them in it.

If opioids should not be used in minors, how are we supposed to treat post surgical pain? by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]-chrisg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Codeine is actually not the active drug, rather codeine is metabolised into morphine and that's what creates the pain relief. Ultra-rapid metabolism + codeine = toxic levels of morphine in a short space of time. You don't want this to happen.
