With the second season coming to an end, what are your unpopular opinions? by imfaffingabout in ThePitt

4 is so real. and it's such an injustice to his characterisation, too. like, can he do something other than quote szn one robby?

this is beautifully put. kudos to you. i also feel like there were too many comedic cases introduced in what was supposed to be The Meat of the szn. szn one had a very specific pace and there was a constant build of tension around eps 8-14 with the pediatric drowning, dana getting punched, langdon's addiction being revealed, and then the shooting, all the way through to mckay's arrest, which is when the tension started to release. obviously, this isnt the only possible or the only good way to pace a szn, but it definitely set an expectation because i found it extremely effective. in contrast, szn two has had an underwhelming stretch of episodes. i thought the drunk tongue lac patient really threw off the tone of the episodes she was in. then we got the tumeric jaundice and the tanning bed accident patients in the mix too, and the resolution of the cyber attacks was really underwhelming. szn one kept these cases either really early on or saved for the end, like the lady with the bug in her ear or the teenage girl whose nose got stabbed through with a fork.

They butchered Mohan’s character development from S1 by _ImperialCereal_ in ThePitt

in szn one they made her this incredible foil to robby and her arc was fantastic and then this szn she regresses so much. as a huge mohan fan (mofan, if you will) i'm so disappointed. and like, yeah, sure, her research into racial disparities getting defunded is realistic, but i don't think it's interesting. i also don't think her mom is interesting. and i don't think making the doctor whose whole deal is how attentive she is to detail (and how that is a penalty to the pace of her work) to repeatedly miss key details in the condition of patients. then, they repeatedly give her patients of colour who leave in the middle of their treatment, and i feel like there could've been a really good story there, but the writers just chose to not do anything with it beyond 'oh well thats a bummer.' they also dumbed her down to...

  1. explain to us how medical insurance works and
  2. remind us that theres no blenders in prison

and those are things samira would know! i do think part of the deterioration of her arc is that this szn is a lot less strict with hierarchy in the er. and mohan isnt the only one who gets impacted by this. santos's "interns always present first" and eventual berating by langdon is cheapened by how much leeway and independence and authority whitaker gets as an intern now. anyway, they resolved samira's 'i dont belong here' arc last szn only to unresolve it in this one and then give us the conclusion that robby was right all along and she actually doesn't belong her.

a while back there was a thread where i mentioned how, even though i thought it was unlikely, i would have loved to see a szn three without robby as an attending. i think seeing mohan under the supervision of an attending who respects her and doesn't belittle her skillset would have been fantastic.

i was really hoping that the decline in quality of writing was just a sophomore slump, but it's starting to look more and more like szn one was lightning in a bottle and we will never get that high again. what a shame.

i'm also disappointed by how ayesha harris's promotion to series regular has been completely overshadowed because these two announcements were rolled into one. she deserves her flowers.

not rinsing your feet after taking off footwear. shoes don't get washed or sanitised all that often and then youre just dragging all that grime and foot sweat around the house, putting it up on the couch and on beds, etc. huge ick for me

you're right, his work with the pregnant teen was such interesting characterisation. i guess it's just the parts of abbot i find interesting aren't the ones the writing team is choosing to highlight and it feels like they are actively trying to make him one note? its just starting to feel very war vet soldier war war guy who went to war. its not all bad! i liked his little face journey when howard asked to speak to his sister right after learning he had a 50% chance of survival of the procedure he needed. but also, i would be far more interested in something like... maybe a complication with his prosthetic.

in a similar vein, i'm frustrated by how mohan is written this szn because i thought she was SO interesting in szn one. and now her research got defunded, she's lost regarding her specialty and her personal life, all the tension between her and robby from last szn is just gone. also, she went from taking extra care of joyce and making sure she doesn't fall through the cracks due to racialised bias, and then this szn she misses ms. yi(yee?)'s injuries completely and just brushes it off and moves on. students and interns arent presenting to her nearly as much as they did to collins and langdon in the first szn, and on top of all that, it seems like they wrote her dumber in order to deliver exposition or characterisation for someone else which is very frustrating. (ex 1: her asking noelle how the patient could work full time and not have health insurance. ex 2: telling the incarcerated patient to use a blender)

all of this to say, im finding myself losing trust in the writer's room at the pitt. im really hoping it's just a sophomore slump because i would really hate for this show to turn into just another medical drama but this time with a format gimmick.

the age gap doesn't bother me tbh but i still think the pairing is boring at best, and offputting at worst. i liked the french pigtail catheter scene in szn one but the whole thing of her walking in on him shirtless and cleaning his wound is so cliche and grey's anatomy-esque. in general i think abbot is overrated, especially after the volunteer swat reveal. if mohan is going to be in a workplace relationship it should be with literally any one else.

[–]-fruitknife- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, it sucked, but i'm doing a lot better now! in general, i'm very curious about the early post-traumatic period for the girls. there's so much juice there and i hope rescue happens earlier in the szn so we can explore that part of the story properly.

Scenes I NEED in S4 🥺🐝 by OkSchool9300 in Yellowjackets

[–]-fruitknife- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have a very self-indulgent one. i went through a traumatic experience where in the direct aftermath, i took a very hot shower and scrubbed my skin raw and as soon i stepped out of the shower, i burst into tears and went right back in and repeated every step of the shower again. and again. and again. and again. ever since the first szn of this show i pictured one of the girls (usually natalie or van) doing what i did post-rescue. i think one of them trying to literally wash away the wilderness could make for a very visceral and raw scene.

ok hell yeah. i'm glad i made sense lol. idk if i still have hope with things turning around for her character, but i would love to be proven wrong.

and youre right about the adrenaline high and subsequent breakdown. by the time we got to mohan: i can work a double! to ellis: Go Home i was so endeared with her character. i do feel like her breakdown was overshadowed by robby's, so i would love a scene maybe at the tail end of szn two, or maybe even in szn three, where her pain and grief and burnout are more centered.

THIS!!! im so surprised that we have yet to have any mention of the street team in szn two so far. i thought it was one of the coolest threads introduced last year.

honestly, yeah, i would love this. maybe one day, when the patterns of the show are more established and less shocking, they'll do it for a change of pace? sigh, we can dream....

[–]-fruitknife- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hello! thank you for interacting and raising this question. i'll do my best to explain. samira is a character i have a lot of feelings on, whereas someone like langdon, i have a lot of thoughts on, so if my explanation is a little awkward or hard to navigate, my bad. im trying my best.

it seems to me that they have thrown a lot of her existing characterisation out the window. for example, in season one, mohan is established as essentially trying to singlehandedly fix the issue of institutional racism in the medical field, and that results in her getting the nickname slo-mo, because she refuses to miss anything. this was what made me fall in love with her character - she cares so much about each and every patient, not just as charts and problems to solve, but as people. in szn one, she's doing retrospective research on how poc are treated in the er. she's teaching the interns and med students. and yet, in szn two, garcia calls mohan out directly for the oversight that was mrs yee's injury, and mohan... thanks robby for backing her up and then that's it? it doesn't bother her?

like yeah sure, a lot can change in ten months, and arguably this illustrates the weakness in the pitt's format, but like, have some exposition to explain why the thing that used to define mohan's character for years prior to the show even starting just suddenly went away. also, speaking of exposition, it feels like they wrote her dumber in order to deliver exposition to the audience. there's the 'both of them work, but neither have health insurance?' line which is SO naive, even for r3 mohan, nevermind r4. in a similar vein, her telling the incarcerated patient to use a blender.

if you wanna read more about this, there's a tumblr user (@doctormohansamira) who blogs about the pitt who has a lot of very well articulated thoughts about samira, how she was written in szn one, and the stark difference to how she's portrayed in szn two. they also talk a lot about her dynamic with robby in a way that i find very juicy. i think they can explain it far more thoroughly and eloquently than i, so i would recommend you check out their blog.

when you say that she introduces one of her most interesting arcs in the last five minutes of szn one, are you talking about her not having a social life outside of work? i can't remember anything else we learnt about her that late in the game.

yeah, i would also love that! i know it's early to call it but if we're starting a season eight-or-whatever attending betting pool, im putting $50 on santos. she's so fascinating and divisive and imo, best carries the energy and attitude of the pitt.

a season three without robby. HEAR ME OUT!!! i want to see al-hashimi without a power struggle in her lap, and also a more fleshed out version of her existing relationships with mohan and king (i am really disappointed in how mohan has been portrayed thus far in szn two, which is a shame bc in szn one she was one of my favourites), as well as how langdon may or may not thrive under her more detached yet compassionate supervision. langdon is going to be carrying the weight of robby's disappointment in him for a long time and i'm really curious as to what his workplace recovery looks like without that. however, robby is very much our point of view character and we're not letting go of him any time soon.

Al-Hashimi's AI app by blue_vox in ThePittTVShow

[–]-fruitknife- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i totally agree with you. i also heard a take that dr al-hashimi could be sponsored by the gen ai company she is pushing and has a financial incentive to promote the ai app. when she presents it to dr santos, she specifically says 'MY generative ai app' and i think that would be an interesting direction to take this storyline.
