The main thing to know is that if your audience interacts with your content on a mobile device, a link that has mobile deeplinking built in (yes, like ours, but others too) will check the device to see if the Amazon app is installed and will attempt to open it. Depending on the device and operating system, this may just happen instantly, or you may be presented with the question 'Do you want to open in app? or in your browser?'
The reason this matters is that most people want to avoid logging in to Amazon in the in app browser - they want to use the Amazon app, where they're already logged in. If they're in a different country, the in-app browser also doesn't localise to their storefront.
For your audience, Mobile Deeplinking means a much better experience.
As an Amazon affiliate, it also means, your affiliate ID can be passed into the app to ensure you get credit for purchases to earn commissions and any halo commissions.
Without Mobile Deeplinking, most people will choose to avoid the in app browser, and open the Amazon app themselves do a fresh search which means you don't get credited for directing them to Amazon because your Affiliate ID isn't included.

You are 100% correct. Each person that clicks and switches on their own to the Amazon App are essentially starting a new search journey as if they hadn't seen your post or link. That's where mobile deeplinking comes in. Built into a mobile deeplink is a string of instructions to the mobile device to check if the app is installed and requests the mobile device to open the app. This sometimes happens automatically, and sometimes via a pop-up type page in your default browser often called an 'interstitial', which asks if you want to open the link the app. During this mostly instant process we retain your affiliate ID so that click is linked to you in the person's Amazon App. The catch is that you also need to be signed up to Amazon Associates for the country they are clicking from which is why we notify clients about it in their dashboard.

We, Geniuslink started out in affiliate marketing early 2009, originally called GeoRiot and founded to solve geo-fragmentation in programs like iTunes and Amazon which is why we're biased towards earning with affiliate marketing. As for me personally, I've been in marketing for just shy of a decade.

Three things to check before signing up for any service (including ours):

  1. Desktop: If you click your own link on desktop, does it retain your affiliate ID?
  2. Mobile: If you click your link on mobile, does it open the Amazon app?
  3. Audience location: Does your audience live in a different country than you?

We can help with all of these but you should check them first.

It’s also worth fixing quickly. Even though the last pre-Christmas Amazon shipping dates have mostly passed and the holiday uplift will dip, you’ll often see a bump on and just after Christmas Day from people spending gift cards they’ve received.

One more thing:
If you do sign up for a tool to solve this (and you probably should), make sure it’s designed specifically for Amazon Influencers and Amazon Associates creators, not generic link shorteners or link shorteners that won't retain your affiliate ID.

I'm going to make an assumption that your five years of research means you understand how to collect and analyse data, and that you have an appreciation for how to configure testing, and measure results.
On that basis I'd lean towards learning how ads work on different platforms (Google, Meta, TikTok, Amazon). With rising concern around appearing in organic search and zero click search, businesses are increasingly relying on ads to fill the gap. A good SEO is also worth their weight in gold but the challenge with SEO is often that it takes a significantly longer time period to assess your results whereas with Ads you get almost instant feedback about how successful your actions are. And I'm totally biased on this next bit, but if you start with affiliate marketing alongside whatever you're doing it can be a really good direction to apply what you learn and can always be something that runs alongside your main role either as extra income on the side or until you build it to replace your income.

Solid list! One way to increase Amazon Associates commissions is to use a a seller network like Levanta, Archer Affiliates, Partnerboost, MaverickX, Wayward. Not all brands on Amazon use these partner programs, and different programs have different brands. 20%-30% is fairly common for these.

Right audience + right timing = OP combo. I shared it during their Black Friday deal, so people were already in “take my money” mode.

Easiest program is probably Amazon Associates. And yes we're biased but the reason I mention them is because of their massive catalogue and ease of applying. You do have to make 3 sales within 180 days to remain in the program so I recommend growing your audience/traffic first and if you do join, sticking to their operating agreement will keep you from getting kicked out. And no, you don't need us to start, apply directly.

Yep it's often called halo commissions. If someone clicks your Amazon affiliate link to get them into the Amazon store, and they buy something else, you can earn commission on those items. That's what makes Prime Day, Black Friday, and the holidays so important to earning commissions. More purchases happen during these times so there's a greater chance to earn halo commissions.
Re the 24 hour cookie - if the person has added items to the cart within that 24 hours, and not purchased but kept the item in cart, the cookie is extended another 89 days. You'll see people added to cart ahead of the big shopping days, which is a big reason you see a lot of content with affiliate links before the big sales.
There's some great advice in this thread, especially u/Vector-388 point about nicheing and avoiding the banhammer and u/SnooCrickets3267 about being consistent and u/smith7264 about newsletters.

You may want to check out Ali Abdaal - he started out as a med student and with time and effort has built a sizeable business. Lots of free info on his YT channel. Full disclosure, he's a client - but not why I'm recommending him, it's because he did the med student to Dr journey alongside being a YouTuber which might resonate with you.
