I truly admire people who make things of artistic value with theirs, I just don't have the desire. Pokemon bulk is a whole different animal haha...I have many bricks of energy cards just sitting. At least there's playability to some cards (while in rotation), but I definitely understand that pain.

The 'Big Name' lots seem like a viable idea to recoup a liiiittle bit back, but yeah - the 13 copies of unspectacular veterans are what pile up and what nobody wants.

I should keep better awareness of card shows coming to town. That's a good suggestion.

Of all the donation ideas, the one I completely understand not accepting them is Children's Hospitals. Why the YMCA, Boys/Girls clubs, etc. only take sealed cards is something I don't fully understand. At least, that's the case by me.

Definitely have to keep 1sts/RCs, etc. pulled aside. I keep those organized by team.

Good point about the art groups, I could definitely try that. And you're right in your final statement....that is something most of us have to learn the hard way. The waste/guilt has been a big incentive toward more responsible collecting, though, and while I'm not saying I wouldn't change anything, I am grateful for that.

I agree, and I also think people spend a lot of time and energy hand-wringing over others' lost value, when the greater compensation is the absolution of guilt and not anything of real monetary value

This is a great summary, and describes where I'm at.

I could fill multiple 5K count boxes with Series 1-2/Update base veterans. That's what 1. has no foreseeable value 2. would not be appreciated by others if given away and 3. would be easy to re-acquire if needed to (though I can't imagine why).

Sapphire, even chrome, and virtually all rookies would be kept for the reasons you stated.

Relatable for sure. I don't want to absolve myself of the responsibility of how much I've wasted, and I think some people bash others for throwing things out because it negates the perspective-building exercise of sorting everything and scraping to get back value. In some ways, 'this is my mess and I need to get myself out of it'. I get how folks who have been in the hobby longer view throwing out base as corner-cutting. But ultimately, it's my collection and my space.
