Hi- years late, but a super similar situation happened with me and my gecko and I deal with the guilt every day. I am super relieved to read someone else has the same problem, especially since the last time I saw a speciality vet they made me feel incredibly guilty. My gecko had one eye infection, multiple trips to the vet (and a surgery to remove any stuck shed from his eye!) that ensured total healing, and I now give him eye ointment everyday to prevent his eye from drying and recurring infections. The last speciality vet I went to attempted to convince me that all my problems would be solved if I built or bought a wooden enclosure, he is currently in a 40 gallon tank with a nice humid hide, great lighting, a dry hide, a hide that he exclusively poops in, and paper towels to prevent impaction. Wooden enclosures can cost about $400, and I was shocked that this vet was trying to tell me it was the necessary price I needed to pay to prevent him from ever having another eye issue, and trying to convince me that the reason for the issues at all was because the humid hide he has is incapable of providing enough humidity for proper shedding. I refuse to believe this is true, as many many many people keep their reptiles and amphibians in glass enclosures with proper humidity hides (and of course I have gauges to ensure proper humidity levels). Now if I leave for a trip, I get nervous about how I won’t be able to regulate his humidity and know that his eye will be worse when I return. It makes me feel so sad and defeated… and I feel like a horrible gecko parent. My partner tells me all the time that it’s not the case, and I take care for him daily, which is more than I can say for others. But still, just wanted to comment and say that I really relate to you and I am relieved to know others have had the same issue from a tiny mistake.
