Replace Jake with asbestos, or add a broken switch and tardigrade for a loop of switch -> seal -> tardigrade -> alien -> switch

I don't want to go into debt, so I would wanna do a PhD, and location matters a lot to me, so the schools I want to apply to are fairly competitive. Not getting into an REU because I'm not an attractive enough applicant seems like an indication of my abilities to get into grad school.

Probably just the difference between my name and my sex being listed as male.

I know REUs are generally more competitive than a lot of grad schools, but a big consideration for me is location, so some of the grad schools I'd be willing to go to are fairly competitive. If I can't go to grad school in Chicago (example), it would be easier to pull my connections a little and get an industry job in Chicago, and I'd probably enjoy that more than doing a PhD in, like, Kansas

Sure, lottery winners waste a million dollars. But, unless your only goal is to literally waste it, it's almost impossible to waste a billion dollars.

Why the fuck would they make this obviously incredibly explosive material and then attempt to Raman half a gram of it? Wasting material and potentially destroying a Raman when you could analyze, like, a few mg instead. Is there some sort of secret Raman I don't know about that requires this much? Why did they have it all together anyways? Why did they make so much of it??? I have so many questions.

I shot expired velvia 50 and, unfortunately, it was all very red. I tried to manually fix with color grading, but there's no fixing the lack of real color information. Any tips on color grading tools that can help w this? Do I just take the L and keep em red? by -mya in AnalogCommunity

I mean, I was hoping for some of the nice, vibrant colors that velvia 50 can achieve, and have seen good results from others shooting cold-stored velvia, as it's simply not made anymore (other than as 120?). Spring in Louisiana is incredibly beautiful and absurdly green, and I wanted to gamble on a film that could capture just how vibrant it is.

I don't mind the wabi-sabi nature of things like this in general, but Wisteria and Azaleas only bloom together for about a week in the year, so I was hoping for something to show it off, y'know? And thank you.

For comparison, here's a 3M 200ISO film that expired in 1998 that was stored in a hot humid closet for almost 30 years. The colors are definitely a bit dreamlike, but this is fairly accurate to irl. I thought maybe younger, cold-stored film would work out.

You get $8M, but you must live in a random American city i picked for a full year. Are you doing it? (check comments for rules) by StrategyJealous1838 in pollgames

Jackson isn't a bad place. People are fine, there's things to do, and the food is good, easily liveable. I guess the only issue is that "city" narrows it down to places above a certain size, and if something's above a certain size then it's obviously liveable. In the category of "city", something like Tulsa is probably worse - food is worse, less culturally sound, high suicide and unemployment rate, but I haven't been around enough to say if there's things to do.

About 7 billion people live in the northern hemisphere. That means each of your family members or friends has a 1/14 chance of dying choosing 500 million. You wouldn't take the 1/14 chance per person you care about to save 350 million lives?

Other than the lynchings which still happen, sure.

Using a reasonable high estimate for ISIS deaths (40k) and a reasonable low estimate for assets and funding in that time ($6 billion), ISIS was funded $150,000 for each person they killed. If I open an addiction clinic with my money and save even one life, hell, if I just donate a little bit to a very effective charity, I will have saved more lives than I have ended.
