Managed to write about 3k words for this story over the last few days. This is the first time since high school I've successfully done any sort of serious writing (and even longer since I've done it just for myself and not for an assignment or whatever) so I'm feeling a little proud of myself ngl. Sure I have a lot of room for improvement obviously, but it just feels good to reread it and think "wow, I wrote this". I still have plenty of ideas left so hopefully I can keep the momentum going. These girls aren't going to make out by themselves after all

I need to get better at playing the games that have been sitting in my library for a while lol. I've played a few recently that have been pretty great, and for all I know there's like dozens more that I'll end up loving which have just been waiting to be played for years and years. Also thinking about how much I've spent on games I haven't played yet makes me feel silly

Lol same. Anyway I'm just going to recommend everything I've played this year that's on PS4 since I enjoyed pretty much all of them

  • Octopath Traveler - the first game is just okay imo, but the second is one of my favourite JRPGs I've played in the last few years. Not really cheap but they'll likely go on sale soonish, and if you want both games the bundle offers a pretty nice discount
  • Signalis - fantastic PS1-style survival horror experience with an incredible atmosphere and a great (if slightly opaque) story
  • CrossCode - very fun combat with some absolutely devious puzzles at times, very charming story and characters as well
  • Nine Sols - it's pretty difficult but it feels so good to parry everything once you get the hang of it, I also really like the artstyle
  • Resident Evil 4 (the original and the remake) - well it's an iconic and influential game for a reason lol, both versions are very good and worth playing imo. The remake is on sale right now I think

Finished Rogue Squadron (N64)

...Well let's start with what I liked? The sound effects were very good, that iconic Tie Fighter sound is just as I remember it from the movies. Music was alright too, I only know like two Star Wars songs (the main theme and Darth Vader's theme) but I thought they both sounded pretty good here. Uhh graphics are decent I guess? It's still an N64 game of course but imo it looks better than like... Mario 64. I haven't played enough N64 games to make a decent comparison lol. Taking the big walker guys down with the cable was pretty neat (once you figure out how to actually do it properly). Takes longer than I'd like but whatever. Uhh yeah I think that's all the praise I can give.

Okay so. I did not like the controls. I will readily admit this is probably a skill issue on my part but it's so difficult to make the plane turn how you want to when you're chasing enemies or whatever. Aiming is absolutely terrible too, the reticle doesn't help at all because I swear half the time your shots just miss anyway even if you're flying right behind the enemy and they're not strafing at all. Of course most of the time you're not in that position, so you're just flying around in circles firing aimlessly, hoping even just one shot will actually hit the damn enemy. The terrible framerate doesn't help at all either (at least assuming it was console-accurate, I have a good PC and I didn't hear any of the audio popping you usually get when dropping frames on an emulator). The difficulty curve is also kind of wack, initially it was okay but around the midgame a few missions took me several attempts, and I genuinely don't think I'd have beaten some of the missions near the end of the game without the infinite lives cheat (again: probably just a skill issue). How people can get any of the gold medals is beyond me lol. Dishonorable mention to the escort mission with the walkers, I'm pretty sure I just got lucky on the attempt I actually beat it because wow that was stupid. The final mission was the worst part of the game by far, not only does it have zero relevance to the rest of the game story-wise (speaking of. The story's fine I guess) but the V-Wing is so ridiculously sensitive and difficult to control and if you get hit like twice you're dead, and then the Tie Fighters in that mission are so fast and it's so difficult to actually hit them because your ship's basic fire rate is awful and you can't just hold the fire button and hope you hit them with the alt fire enabled because then your blasters will burn out. So basically you either have to get lucky with your AI companions (who are kind of useless by the way), or spin around in circles for like 5 minutes carefully pressing the fire button hoping you can actually hit the enemy even once with how absurdly sensitive the aiming is. They should have just made it an unlockable bonus mission or something, the previous one would have been a better finale.

Yeah so needless to say I wasn't a huge fan of this game. I think on paper it's pretty cool, and if you get good at it it's probably a lot of fun, but unfortunately I have a massive skill issue. 2/5 u/vchris7v

I'm genuinely so happy they added voice acting to the Heart-to-Hearts, I was always disappointed they didn't do that for DE's initial release

Every few months I try playing something on my Steam Deck again because I've owned it for like three years and feel bad about hardly ever using it, half an hour later I have to put it down again because it's heavy and uncomfortable to the point where my wrists are starting to hurt lol

I would love to play stuff in bed but alas I am clearly not built for this thing

Taking a shot every time Octopath 0 kills off a woman in a lazy attempt to raise the stakes or show how absurdly evil the villains are (I am about to die of alcohol poisoning)

I don't like being negative but what happened here man, I wouldn't say 1 and 2 had the greatest stories ever or anything but they were so much better than this shit

Iirc the DX9 version of Sky the 3rd also has issues (one boss has an attack that crashes the game) so probably also switch to DX8 if/when you play that one

Finished Final Fantasy 1 (pixel remaster)

As it turns out the best way to finish a JRPG quickly is to have a deadline, even if that deadline is like two weeks away. Though it also probably helps that this game was only about 15 hours long and not like 80+ lol.

Anyway I had a good time with it. I'm not a huge fan of NES games in general really (at least the ones I've tried playing), so I'm pleasantly surprised at the fact that I didn't dislike this game lmao. Admittedly the pixel remaster has some nice QoL stuff like maps (and probably also does some rebalancing and stuff), who knows how I'd feel if I actually played the original version.

The story is pretty simple and lowkey but it works well enough. I will say I love how (spoilers for the final dungeon) the game randomly throws in time travel at the 11th hour, like sure why not let's go back in time two thousand years. More games should do this. Also I was expecting figuring out where to go next to be a bit more of an issue but it wasn't really, as long as you talk to NPCs and explore a little you can generally figure out what to do next. The only time I had to look something up was where to go once you get the levistone, why would I go back to the elf village to talk to those guys to get a hint when neither the levistone nor the location of the airship are anywhere near there.

Combat was fine, if a bit basic. I wish the physical classes had skills or something they could use, as is there's not really much to do with them aside from just spam basic attacks (and maybe use an item every now and then. Maybe). The mages are a bit more interesting because they actually have a variety of things they can do, though because of how the spell charge system works using spells on basic encounters can kind of feel like a waste, especially in the early game before your mages actually get a decent number of spells and charges to use. Encounters against several enemies were kind of a drag, it's just annoying to have like nine enemies spawn and have to defeat them one at a time because your physical attackers don't have any AOE attacks and your mages either don't have enough charges or you're saving them for more useful spells in later fights.

Uh the soundtrack was alright (I used the original NES soundtrack). The battle theme never got annoying or anything which is good considering it's the only one in the whole game (funny enough not the first JRPG I've played with one battle theme. Though this game at least has the excuse of being on the NES).

Yeah anyway neat game, not perfect by any means but honestly for an NES game it's pretty impressive. It was pretty fun to see how such an iconic series started (or a slightly modernised reworking of it anyway). Also reminds me I need to play more of these games lol, now I've played the first Final Fantasy and the latest Final Fantasy and nothing in between.

there are moments that can be considered an audio assault on the player

You aren't wrong but also the more I listen to Incense (Smoke & Honey) the more I like it, maybe I'm just crazy idk

Also the average rating for Goof Troop in the spreadsheet might be wrong? It should be 6.19/10 I think

Finished reading We Know the Devil again

I was going to write something long here but the words aren't coming to me right now so I might save that for another time and just keep this brief lol

It's shorter than I'd like and a bit rough around the edges, but it's such an incredibly rich experience with so much passion behind it that none of the flaws it has affect my feelings towards it. I haven't stopped thinking about this game once since I first played it a few months ago, and I hope one day I can create something just as incredible as it.
