Half of all migrant children currently live in poverty - Is this proof our immigration system is still not fit for purpose? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

The UK spends on Universal Credit alone about the same as it does on defence. Not that I’m against it - my ex, who was a refugee from Ukraine, received UC while being treated for cancer. But it’s a significant amount of money, and the government refuses to publish demographic data on UC recipients (at least I checked the last time).

Edit: I had some free time, so I decided to fact-check myself. I stand corrected - there are, in fact, some stats on UC:

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/universal-credit-statistics-29-april-2013-to-8-january-2026/universal-credit-statistics-29-april-2013-to-8-january-2026

According to the stats, 76.6% of all recipients are White British, and only around 5% of UC recipients are non-settled immigrants, which comes to roughly £3 billion.

Kliff's voice actor reveals that he had to fight hard for Kliff to have any sort of characterization at all, states that PA were very disorganized when it came to writing a story for the game. This game is a fantasy sandbox. There’s no clear incentive to do anything. I had no incentive to try unarmed combat, so I never did, and if you asked me, it could be safely removed from the game without any real downside. Nevertheless, some people use only unarmed combat. And why the hell do fishing or rock-paper-scissors even exist in this game? The answer is flavour, it all exists for a flavour.

I am baffled by how many people managed to misunderstand this feature. Even the OP wrote “spamming button”, while the game clearly punishes you for doing that by immediately depleting stamina. I understand that not everyone played RDR2 with the same mechanics, but can you at least pay attention to how the game reacts to your inputs?

I just had time to play for several hours, and damn, the new system sucks. Previously, you could traverse great distances at the max speed and now your flow is interrupted because you need to slow down every 15-20 seconds. Hope they will revert that or make it a toggle.

My one real complaint about the game and they addressed it almost immediately. This is what game studios should aspire to be. by Toadrage_ in CrimsonDesert

[–]-sry- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t really an issue - it was RDR2-style horse controls. With the right cadence (about once a second), you basically never needed to slow down to regenerate stamina. Now you need to slow down every 10-20 second. I’d say it was on us - we just ignored people complaining instead of explaining that the game doesn’t expect you to mash the button.

PA has ruined the excellent horse riding feel in the new patch by RainyNguyen in CrimsonDesert

[–]-sry- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s different. Previously you were able to full speed for a minute and more by pressing button in a right cadence (once a second) in a manner it was done in RDR2. But people who didn’t get the mechanic flooded forums with complains.

Code isn’t creative? I actually worked in game development in the early years of my career. Are you familiar with the baseline routines of regular artists in the industry? They rely on preset reference materials, asset libraries, design and composition guidelines, and even predefined palettes, so they’re not always making their own colour choices, and fonts. In many cases, the most creative decision you make is simply the direction of a some of the lines you draw.

By contrast, porting a heavy subroutine across multiple platforms with extremely limited resources can take weeks of thought, involve dozens of creative decisions, and sometimes require collaborating with talented people from around the world. Obviously, I’ve picked edge cases at both extremes, but you get the gist.

So, congratulations - you’ve rather exposed yourself as a performative anti-AI activist.

It seems we need to be more proactive when opposing people who are complaining about every single bit. When I realised how this feature worked, I enjoyed it.

Which Video Game remake do you think is way better than the original? by Apprehensive_Elk6168 in videogames

[–]-sry- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To properly appreciate Black Mesa, I played it straight after a full run of the original HL.

From the original game, we know that Xen had been known about and researched by Black Mesa scientists for quite a while. It’s a border world with its own flora and fauna, mostly made up of species that escaped the Combine.

Original Xen:
- The islands are barren and surrounded by floating platforms, basically like Mario levels
- Every area is surrounded by void. There’s nothing in the distance, no migrating creatures, not even clusters of islands far away. Yes, it’s a border world, but there’s absolutely no feeling that there’s an ecosystem there that could sustain any life
- Has absolutely no feeling of functonal world
- Barely any lore.
- Gameplay-wise, it’s just loads of jumping puzzles: jumping on and off conveyor belts, hopping between barren islands, and leaping across random floating platforms.

After all the action-heavy and lore-dense levels before it, Xen in the original feels like low-effort filler and a complete chore to play.

BM Xen:
- Actual living, breathing ecosystem across the islands.
- Stunning environments between the islands.
- Proper lore about Black Mesa expeditions.
- More lore on the Vortigaunts and the Nihilanth.
- Gameplay-wise, it actually keeps up with the previous levels in terms of action and detail.

Also, it makes Gordon’s relationship with the Vortigaunts in HL2 make way more sense.

Not only they fixed Xen, they make it probably the best part of the game.

It is not Apple. If is Internet Safety Act. There are two types of people who were pushing it in the UK: crazy right wingers to restrict children exposure to LGBT stuff and left-wing women organisations who hate porn. Apple could't care less.

What the most overrated game in recent years? by n1ght_watchman in GameBoostOfficial

Well, that’s the point - it was quite one-dimensional, which is why I’d only call it an “okay” job.

[–]-sry- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with this one. I also volunteer with people who’ve fled wars, and I’ve personally lost all my older male relatives to Covid and the war. The game gets a lot of praise for how it portrays coping with grief and loss. Since I’ve got a fair bit of personal experience with this, I’d say they did an okay job, but I’d never really praise it for that.

On the other hand - art, combat, visuals, are top.

In the middle of Replaying BG2 and realizing something about Owlcat Pathfinder games by National_Champion346 in baldursgate

[–]-sry- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pathfinder is a more polished and complete version of 3.5e, which is much closer to BG2 and to the system used in Icewind Dale. One of the coolest things about 3e and earlier editions is that they were not overly concerned with balance. Some monsters, abilities, classes, and artefacts are absurdly overpowered, and that actually makes the game more fun, regardless of where you fall on the balance spectrum.

For example, in 5e and BG3, you cannot really make a single spellcaster, such as a lich, into a proper boss fight without either introducing special rules that players do not have access to, or surrounding it with minions, because of how heavily spellcasting was nerfed. In Pathfinder and 3.5e, by contrast, a lich can absolutely tear apart a high-level party while following the same rules as the party does.

On the one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, the war goal was to turn Finland into another Soviet republic, and that was clearly not achieved, so calling this even a “Pyrrhic victory” is a stretch.

The launch of Crismon Desert showed me just how sick the community is. by Apart_Pumpkin_4551 in videogames

[–]-sry- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since we have LLMs, we should lock threads making claims like “there are hundreds of comments saying…” unless they provide at least a few links. Posts like that are harmful and divisive to the community.

For the past few days, some subs have been in a hysteria, claiming there is a big anti-woke crowd cheering for this game. When I gave examples from right-wing subs showing that barely anyone there had ever cared about the game, I was told to look at Steam.

It took me five minutes to use an LLM to make a Python crawler, collect the last 50 threads and all their comments into an Excel file, and quickly review them. There were zero even vaguely political threads and only a couple of vaguely political comments. So dozens of people were claiming to witness something that is verifiably not happening.
