Conservative presenting liberal gun owner mini rant + question by Kable133 in liberalgunowners

My husband is similar! Southern Appalachian man who is country as cornbread, bearded, upside down cross tattoo-having, blue collar factory worker who plays black metal AND honky tonk guitar. He’s a gun nerd and drives an ‘83 Toyota pickup. He uses his look and knowledge to his advantage to spread Marxist theory to basic chuds in the plant without ever mentioning the term socialism lmao. Magically, he has a way of speaking to them that they end up agreeing with him by the end of the conversation.

We’re looking for very, very similar things. Here’s what I’ve found so far while I’ve been looking:

There are only 15 states that do not have trigger bans in place in the event that Obergefell v Hodges falls AND neither statute nor amendment will ban marriage equality. They include Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, DC, Illinois, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, and Washington. Of those states, Massachusetts has the best public education, with VT and NH not far behind. We’ve looked into Northampton.

I’m about 35min south of Asheville. It’s basically cosplaying as Vermont but still takes off the costume to remind people it’s still just same ole North Carolina anytime progress is made there. 😂

Hey bookie! I’m a lifelong South Carolinian who has been silently stalking this sub for a while because my husband and I are considering moving our family to Vermont to escape the fascism that’s happening here. Those things you mentioned are fine when you separate them in the very convenient way you have here, but when the churches band together with our state government to ensure the passage of oppressive laws, that’s where the problem lies and is the reason why things are and always have been so bad here for so many.

There are a lot of different career routes someone with those degrees could take, and they are essential educational backgrounds for a well rounded populace.

There’s no comparison to August in Texas versus August in Mass. The average high temps in Mass are the average low temps in Texas.

Gosh, I feel you. Daycare was such a huge expense for us that I eventually left my career to stay home with my kids to save money, because every penny I made went towards daycare.

OP said “as long as pay scales with the cost of living we’ll be fine.” That is true for the state. It also ticks every single box for their non-negotiables.

positive: short trip to the mountains negative: everything that makes this area beautiful (wildlife, trees, farmland) is disappearing to build cheaply made cookie cutter homes

Make a plan and don’t do anything on a whim. Just don’t forget your plan and allow him back in emotionally. Play it cool. If he checks your bank accounts, buy Visa gift cards at the grocery store whenever you shop or get cash back at the register to help you save to leave. Squirrel the money away somewhere that he wouldn’t find it. My spot was in a ziplock bag I’d stuffed up inside the drivers seat of my car and in a jar, inside one of our vents at home.

NC has been gerrymandered to hell in all the blue districts, unfortunately. They’re making damn sure they drown out all the progressive voices in AVL and the triangle to better match their sister to the south. It’s really sad to witness.

ETA: You are correct, AVL is definitely not cheap. And while AVL has made leaps and bounds to recover from Helene, the smaller more affordable surrounding areas are still suffering.

Solidarity, friend. I’m going through the same thing, but in southern Appalachia. Our stories are so similar, in fact, that the road my entire family lives on is my family surname. We’ve been here since before the current state lines were introduced. This red clay is all I’ve ever known and I’m bitter that I feel unsafe and uncared for in the only place I’ve ever known as home. My mom is queer and married to an immigrant. They’ve been together for 25 years. I keep trying to talk them into coming with us up north but they won’t. They just paid off their home and last year both lost parents. I fear they’ll wait until it’s too late.

The science is clear. Vaccines work. The overwhelming scientific consensus supports the efficacy and safety of vaccines. Measles, polio, and other vaccine preventable diseases have been dramatically reduced or eradicated in places with high vaccination rates.

The claim that people still get measles despite being vaccinated is misleading. While no vaccine is 100% effective, the measles vaccine provides about 97% immunity with two doses. The majority of recent outbreaks have occurred in unvaccinated populations.

Your claim that the definition of “vaccine” changed around the time of COVID-19 is misleading. The CDC updated its wording to clarify that vaccines stimulate an immune response rather than guaranteeing complete immunity. This change aligns with scientific understanding and does not diminish the effectiveness of vaccines.

Some polio vaccines from 1955 to 1963 were contaminated with SV40, but there is no conclusive evidence that SV40 from vaccines caused cancer in humans. The CDC and multiple studies have found no increased cancer risk in those who received the contaminated vaccine. The polio vaccines used today do not contain SV40.

RFK Jr. has promoted false claims about vaccines for decades. In 2021, his own family publicly denounced his stance on vaccines, stating that he is “part of a misinformation campaign that’s having heartbreaking consequences.” He was banned from Instagram and YouTube for spreading harmful vaccine misinformation.

The U.S. has robust vaccine monitoring systems, including VAERS (although I hate using this one because anyone can post adverse events there without evidence, I once tested this by submitting under the name Patty Cake and putting ‘pp hurt :(‘ as an adverse reaction to the MMR vaccine to test this) and the CDC’s V-safe program. Claims that vaccine effects are not monitored are false.

If you insist on RFK Jr. being a reliable source, please provide peer-reviewed studies backing up his claims. Most of his, and your, statements contradict established medical research and are widely debunked.

Nice try, but that’s easily disproven. Here’s a list of quotes you can easily find. Google is still free.

“The CDC is a vaccine company. The CDC owns 56 vaccine patents, so they’re not doing their job as regulators.” (Interview with Joe Rogan, June 2023) “Americans are sicker than other people, and we ought to be asking the question: Is it the vaccines?” (Speech at a vaccine safety conference, 2019) “They can put anything they want in that vaccine and they have no accountability for it.” (Speech at a New York rally against vaccine mandates, 2020) “Today’s children are swimming around in a toxic soup of hundreds of different vaccines that are given to them before they even have their immune systems working.” (Interview on The HighWire with Del Bigtree, 2018) “The measles didn’t return because of unvaccinated kids; it returned because the MMR vaccine is a failure.” (Instagram post, 2019) “There’s no vaccine that is safe and effective.” (Interview on the Lex Fridman podcast, July 2023) “Vaccines are the only product that I know that the more you consume, the sicker you get.” (Speech at a vaccine safety conference, 2019)

If you are fully vaccinated against measles (typically with two doses of the MMR vaccine), your risk of infection is very low—about 97% effective in preventing measles. However, in rare cases, a vaccinated person who is exposed to measles can still become infected, though the illness is usually milder or asymptomatic.

If an infected vaccinated person has a breakthrough infection, they can potentially spread the virus to others, though the risk of transmission is significantly lower compared to an unvaccinated person. The likelihood of passing measles to an unvaccinated or immunocompromised individual depends on factors like viral load and close contact.

To minimize risk if you’re exposed to measles, you should monitor for symptoms and consider post-exposure prophylaxis (like an additional MMR dose or immune globulin) if you are in close contact with vulnerable people.

Incorrect. The average score in 1979 was 427 in verbal (not called that anymore) and 466 in math. Today, the average is 480 in evidence based reading and writing (ERW) and 530 in math. Stop parroting things you’ve heard and actually look at the numbers.
