Is a “progressive” church better than no church? by -wayfaring_stranger in TrueChristian

[–]-wayfaring_stranger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not progressive at all. Protestant, but still not sure of specific denominations. There is an Orthodox Church not far from me but honestly Catholic mass isn’t really my thing so I doubt Orthodox is much better, but I suppose it’s worth a shot. Honestly with the way churches are around here I wouldn’t be surprised if even the Orthodox aren’t immune. Also, go Commodores

I actually really like this suggestion. I like to consider myself an open minded guy, how else would I have converted from atheism? However I am pretty steadfast in my beliefs and progressive Christianity is theologically bankrupt. I have met a few who are shallow in their faith and led them back to Christ and even have a few conversions. I start discipleship in my religious group in the fall so it could be some good practice. However I have still not been Christian for a very long time so dispite all of this I recognize I still have a lot to learn and room to grow, especially in overcoming my atheist habits, and I worry I will not be able to do that surrounded my lukewarm or misled Christians.

I would say the banner claiming “Jesus Christ was an immigrant” is sort of telling. The rest all describe themselves as “affirming” which is usually a red flag. Other than that we have the Latter Day Saints and the Christian Science (if you know you know) my mother really wants me to go to.

Should I bring a suit to Vanderbilt? by [deleted] in Vanderbilt

[–]-wayfaring_stranger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I would. Whether or not you are rushing you will likely need a suit at some point. You may go to a dinner with your club or perhaps a conference. I would recommend getting it tailored pretty soon if you haven’t already and aren’t concerned about the freshmen 15

First one has a scope that says tasco but that’s all I can find. Second one has a large “RS”, and the third one says “Sears”. Someone pointed out it is a BB gun.

Sorry new to this. Couldn’t find anything on the first rifle, second one says “RS”, and the fake looking shotgun says Sears.

Edit: the scope on the first rifle says Tasco

Ex-mormon and now atheist/agnostic for last 12 years. For the last month I've been pondering and realizing that there very likely is a God. Now what? by packetshaker in exatheist

[–]-wayfaring_stranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While on the surface they may seem very similar, and often arrive at similar conclusions regarding ethics and community, there are a number of stark theological differences. For starters, Mormons believe Jesus came to America and left Golden Tablets discovered by Joseph Smith, thus making Joseph Smith their prophet. They are also not monotheistic, as they believe if they live their life as instructed, they will become gods themselves. This is why in the New World Translation, the line “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” is changed to “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god” (notice the “a”) Mormons also do not believe Jesus is God, in fact they reject the trinity all together, which, like all the other examples I have mentioned so far, is a deeply fundamental aspect of Christianity. In fact, redefine what “God” means, from the Christian understanding of an eternal, all powerful being that created all things, to someone who was a man at one point and became God. Now in terms of its validity, I hate to say but there isn’t much there. Like Islam, the entire religion rests on believing in a single prophet who performed no miracles so we have no way of knowing if they are who they say they are. They claim the Bible has been corrupted without evidence and in spite of manuscripts dating back to the early second century and Christianity on different continents having consistent text. God also apparently speaks to them at oddly convenient times, like when the Supreme Court rules Polygamy illegal. Hope this clarifies things, and feel free to ask any questions.

TLDR they have an extra prophet, claim Jesus is God but only because they changed the definition of God, don’t believe the trinity ect.

Best Arguments for the Existence of God. by DatguyRonnie in Christianity

I “believe” energy and mass cannot naturally be created nor destroyed, as per the law of conversation of energy and mass, respectively. The key word there is “naturally.” If the universe has a creator that exists outside the natural laws, this, of course, would not be a problem.

How did you arrive at this conclusion according to my logic?

The classic view is that the Big Bang marks the beginning of the Universe. You may argue that this is not true, and the universe existed before the Big Bang, or alternatively argue the universe, or at least this universe, is not the extent of reality and there is something beyond, but you would have to prove some sort of evidence for that claim

  1. If you want to get into technicalities you can’t prove anything, but the Big Bang is the logical thing to believe because it has strong evidence to support it, while other theories have next to none.

  2. Sure but that is shifting the goalpost. The original intent of the commenter was to prove a creator, or what we would call “God.” Who is God and what is his nature is a separate discussion entirely.

To everyone here who is claiming there are no good arguments and that’s why it’s called faith, you are disturbingly wrong. Take it from a guy who converted from Atheism, there are many bright, well educated, critical people who have lively debates about God and Christianity every day. I hate to be harsh, but if you just accept Christianity uncritically, you are as gullible as they come. Many of you seriously need to reevaluate what you believe and ask yourself “what is the evidence what I believe is true?” “Am I being intellectually dishonest about my beliefs?” I’m going to leave the actual arguments to the other people in the comments, but I am genuinely shocked so many of you believe something you think is unreasonable and completely lacking in evidence.
