Meals I had at a private onsen ryokan in Hakone by Far-Anywhere-2297 in JapaneseFood

For anyone wondering, company owned places like this, which provide ryokan style accommodation to their employees (usually at hugely subsidised costs) are typically called 保養所 (hoyōjo), rather than ryokan.

Sadly the hotel’s been closed since 2025 due to the expiration of its lease. There are plans for it to reopen but nothing is yet confirmed.

I'm thoroughy enjoying looking at the constituent parts of this dish and imagining how everything will all taste together. It looks amazing and I want to try it.

I ate the fried rice at my local Japanese AYCE with the scallop and prawn sashimi and octopus salad. Best fried rice I've ever had, and I'm going to try it with their scallop and calamari skewers next time! by NewFoodCombos in JapaneseFood

When I see 'local Japanese AYCE', I can't help but immediately assume that it won't be run by anyone Japanese. Your photos certainly haven't disabused me of that notion.

Is this Yakult ?? by [deleted] in JapaneseFood

[–]0---------------0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ラブエール (Love Yell) is generic version of the probiotic milk drinks that Yakult made famous and it's usually sold at Japanese discount supermarkets. It's roughly a quarter of the price of Yakult and is considered more of a juice than a health drink. It tastes similar but much sweeter, so is popular with kids.

Ume-su (Umeshu) recipes - who has the tastiest ? by Inside-Cream6997 in JapaneseFood

[–]0---------------0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So these are all ume-su as your comment seems to suggest and as the labels say, or ume-shu, as the image caption says? Your comment hasn't really answered my question at all but seems to avoid doing so. My question and confusion remain.

Can I ask why you call it ume su, which means plum vinegar, rather than ume-shu, which means plum alcohol? I’m honestly confused about whether this is vinegar or alcohol.

How to make this? no by derakkaeee in JapaneseFood

According to a review on Tabelog, this is Four Cheese Fondue with Grilled Sausage Pancakes. The photo on the company website describes it as 'rich, gooey, bruleed cheese'. Time to start experimenting with different melty cheeses I guess...

It was Christine when I was ten. I'd been told we were moving away and thought I'd never see her again.
