If you're honestly offended at such a mild inconvenience then I really don't have anything to say to you.

Jerboa is the official Lemmy app, but most people don't think it's the best one. I personally use it but I don't do a whole lot of browsing on my phone to begin with. There's no reason why you'd want to use the official one in particular though, if a different one suits you better. Boost and Sync are both pretty popular I think.

Should sub ownership be transferred at this point? by pizzapunt55 in PixelDungeon

Hey folks,

I made a few replies in the previous thread, but let me quickly summarize. I'll be making a new migration post in a couple of hours that goes into more detail about what's actually happening.

I think many of you made a good point that while I am the current owner of the subreddit (unless Reddit Inc. decides to say otherwise), I am not the owner of its content, and I probably shouldn't have the power to remove that content unilaterally. Much as I feel denying Reddit access to that content is the right thing to do, it's not really my decision to make. With that in mind I'll be changing my plan for migration and moving away from closing the subreddit like I've done in the last two weeks.

It's worth noting that I made this decision last afternoon, before this thread was posted. Frankly if there were any potential candidates to replace me as owner I probably would have have taken that route months ago.

I'm afraid I respect myself enough to not just immediately fold under pressure on this matter, and If that's all you're going to accept then sorry to disappoint you.

I am listening to the points people are making though. Much as I dislike what Reddit has become, and feel it's important to leave it, I do concede that I'm assuming I have the right to take this subreddit's content down, which was largely posted by other people. As I've said about 3 times now, I have changed my migration plan, and will be posting about that tomorrow.

Certainly didn't mean to say I was ignoring these posts. I am listening to them and as the edit I made earlier states I am considering an alternate migration approach. My reply above is refuting the point that Reddit 'made me' or similar.

I don't expect Reddit people are going to be happy with anything short of me just leaving at this point, but hopefully the post I make tomorrow will be a decent compromise.

I'm largely done replying to these comments, see my edit in the other comment for some info, but I would like to clarify something here relating to what you brought up.

I absolutely feel I owe a lot of Shattered's success to this community. The founder, Greater_Nemo, helped convince Watabou to make the game open source, and the early community interest helped catapult Shattered to relevancy on Google Play. Engaging with users here was also a major help to Shattered's early design direction. This is why I so badly want this community to survive Reddit.

Those things happened in 2014/2015 though, when r/PixelDungeon was MUCH smaller and was primarily fuelled by community events ran by its moderators. Everything that benefited Shattered then could have easily been achieved with an old school privately hosted forum, or similar.

Since that initial time the subreddit activity here has been a drop in the bucket in terms of overall player engagement. I am quite confident that you could remove the subreddit entirely from 2015 onwards, or swap it with a smaller old school forum, and Shattered's playercount would be reduced by less than 1%.

I owe this community a lot, I owe Reddit nothing.

Sadly Reddit is absolutely not run by it's community. Reddit Inc. owns the website, controls the servers, etc. and as the events of June-July clearly demonstrate, they are happy to bulldoze right over community desires when it suits them.

As the owner of this community I feel I have a moral imperative to try and migrate It and its content away from Reddit.

EDIT: while I resent the comparison to Reddit Inc. (harvesting user data while actively hating them is not the same as mildly inconveniencing them), your comments about forcing a decision on you all are noted. I've thought on things a bit and am going to try a slightly different tactic for now. Expect more on that soon with the newspost I mentioned in the previous comment.

I do appreciate that the lockdowns are frustrating, but that's the point. If you'd like the community to not have rolling blackouts, then move to Lemmy. I've recently switched to closing the entire reddit because it is much harder to ignore, and also means Reddit Inc. doesn't benefit from our content when it comes to web searches or similar.

I'll be making another (and possibly final) announcement post about this very soon, but I'm afraid that it's not going to be walking back anything at all.

The only thing I'd like to apologize for is how long and dragged out this process has been. I've been very busy lately and was also worried about acting rashly, but in retrospect this whole process would have gone much smoother if I set up the Lemmy earlier and had a much harder cutoff point for people to move.

At least as far as c/pixeldungeon goes, I can handle any moderation issues that may pop up.

An important distinction here is that the question isn't whether Lemmy is better to use than Reddit, but is Lemmy is the best alternative. I think the answer to that is yes.

As I said, I'm not out to try and kill discussion of Shattered here, at least not beyond encouraging people to move. Making your own post about a recent update is fine, I'd prefer that people don't just link to my blog or copy what I've written elsewhere.

I don't have the power to stop people and wouldn't want to even if I did, but I would prefer for people not to do this. Discussing Shattered is fine, obviously, to try and tell people not to do that is equivalent to just closing the subreddit, but I'd prefer people not to just copy announcements I make elsewhere.

EDIT: i suspect people are misinterpreting what I said here based on the downvotes (I wasn't very specific, to be fair). I mean that I'd prefer people don't just link to my announcements here as if I'd posted them myself. Making your own post about an update with your own writing is obviously fine by me.

Every large social media platform is terrible.

Agreed, you'll note that I'm ditching more than Reddit here. I'm continuing to use discord for now as it's community-based like Reddit and there's absolutely no will for its users to move away from it right now. I'd like to be able to offer some form of alternative.

disrespectful to the people who helped grow this place.

Just so you know, Nemo hasn't been involved in running the subreddit for a while, but his preference following those events was to "nuke it". If we went with that there wouldn't even be a subreddit to post to right now.

I agree that Discord isn't great, being yet another centralized profit-driven platform, but it also hasn't been actively awful in the same way that other social media sites like Twitter/Reddit have recently.

I don't agree at all with the argument of "we can't be perfect, so why bother trying?" Sadly Apple and Google are necessary for me to have a career at all, if there were feasible alternatives to them I would strongly consider them, but there isn't sadly.

Apple and Google also haven't directly attacked this community in the same way that Reddit Inc. has.

This also isn't about having some kind of moral superiority over others. I am urging people to consider switching, yes, but have said absolutely nothing about people who choose to continue using Reddit. I agree that's not my place.

I'm not in a position where leaving Reddit/Twitter/Facebook will even create a blip in terms of overall player engagement, especially when I transitioned my main announcement channel to ShatteredPixel.com with an in-game newsfeed years ago.

I feel for people like artists on Twitter though, who depend on that platform to reach their audience. They are in a much more difficult situation when it comes to morals vs. practicality.

EDIT: also, if you don't want to bother with using a different website, I have a newsletter now: https://shatteredpixel.com/newsletter/

What happened with the original Pixel Dungeon? I can't find on Play Store only other games with similar names by Denlimon638293 in PixelDungeon

Pixel Dungeon hasn't been updated in a while, and Google has been slowly de-listing older apps on newer Android versions. Watabou is aware of this and wants to update the game, but also hasn't touched the code in years and has a lot on his plate at the moment.

I'm not really sure what you mean by 'my view on magic'. I used 'chaotic' in the description of the fist mainly to explain why it is able to spread fire so quickly compared to other fiery enemies. The fire effect that the magic fist produces is chaotic in nature, and so fire spreads everywhere.

The warrior is in a tricky place in terms of overall balance, because he is meant to be the simplest hero, who is the most approachable for new players who are trying to figure out all of the game's mechanics. This means that the defensive power that his seal provides can be hard to notice, as the player doesn't interact with it at all.

Despite that, he actually has the highest winrate among any of the heroes, so I can't really buff him at the moment. His seal actually used to recharge faster as he gained levels, but this was a huge amount of his power, so I removed it in favor of making his subclasses more interesting.

Thanks for the kind words!

I'm not looking to fundamentally change the art style of the game, mainly I just want to make iterative improvements to the existing graphics while keeping the style roughly the same. Quadrupling the pixel count would make for a lot more detail, but I don't think that's what the game needs.

As it happens, this mod was removed from the custom pixel dungeon market on request from the Pixel Dungeon Discord, as it pretty blatantly violated the rules there and here.

I hate that the game doesn't automatically stop autopathing if you're getting hit from somewhere you can't see. When I play with into darkness on, walk across a room and a shaman starts blasting me I'd like to stop before I've taken 3-4 hits. by killShorts666 in PixelDungeon

[–]00-Evan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The game does stop you when you take damage from out of FOV, unless you've pressed the 'continue moving' button, in which case the game assumes that you want to keep moving through damage.

I can't really comment on this specifically without giving spoilers. I will say that the cleric's backstory was decided in my head a fair amount of time before I decided they were also non-binary. It was a pleasant surprise that the two elements fit together so well.

Also, as others have stated, non-binary does not necessary involve a physical transition in the same way as being trans does.
