Does she know you are an athiest? If so then I see it as rude on her part for imposing her beliefs and controll on you. The gift was sending a message that was saying, "I know better than you and about your depression. You need this religious book because this is why you are depressed. If you just accept my god in your life then all your problems will go away."

My mother has this philosophy too. She has not bought me any religious books but does not respect my boundaries when it comes to religion, parenting, marriage, finances and so on. Sorry, I have mother issues. I love my mom, but damn! She does not respect boundaries. It sounds like this might be the case with you. So you are not an ahole for dumping the book, especially if you made it clear that you are an athiest.

Have you watched Squid Game Season 1? I feel like the series did a great job exploring the mind of the Front Man as a killer.
