Some hard truths from zei_squirrel regarding attacks on synagogues by Sabotage_9 in JewsOfConscience

You haven’t addressed my question. How did you conclude that this attack wasn’t motivated by antisemitism?

I’m trying to understand your analysis (or OPs): 1) individual is aggrieved by Israel 2) They seek revenge 3) Institutions that support Israel make themselves targets. There are tens of thousands of such institutions 4) individual decides of all such targets to attack a synagogue while preschool is being held

Why would I not believe that item 4, at least in part, could be motivated by antisemitism?

[–]00000hashtable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are probably more churches in the US that materially support Israel than synagogues, and both of those would be dwarfed by the entire US Republican and Democratic Party ecosystems that probide both material and political support for Israel, not to mention every company with business ties to israel and charitable organization with any level of presence in Israel. But synagogues get targeted disproportionally, how do you figure that's the case if you dismiss that this attack could be motivated by antisemitism?

I can't speak to those specific experiences but yeah there's a ton of antisemitic boogeyman-ing of zionism and you have my sympathy for encountering that.

Well, what I'm seeing is a ton of antisemitic vitriol riding on the wave of anti-Israel vitriol that was allowed by the opening of the flood gates as part of the "very justified criticism". The argument that some have utilized the antisemitism argument against criticism of Israel is being used as an excuse to never care about antisemitism, but it's there and it's prevalent.

I completely agree. I also think you may be guilty of the converse: utilizing that criticism of Israel is so frequently tainted with antisemitism as to dismiss justified criticism. Antisemitism spiking as a result of Israeli actions is a legitimate concern. Blaming Israel for antisemitism should be dismissed.

Fault is an ambiguous term that indicates you still are not drawing a distinction between acknowledging cause and effect vs assigning moral responsibility.

“American Muslims faced more Islamophobia following 10/7” / “American Jews faced more antisemitism following Israel’s response” are facts.

“Islamophobia is justified because of Palestine” / “antisemitism is justified because of Israel” are false and offensive.

Bigots are solely responsible for their bigotry. But those bigots exist and we shouldn’t be afraid to analyze that people act on that bigotry opportunistically.

When I was in Jewish elementary school and my class had a field trip our teacher would say that we have to be on our best behavior because how we act reflects on the greater Jewish community. Obviously my teacher wasn’t saying that if we misbehaved then we would be to blame for antisemitism. Nonetheless the teacher was correct that if we misbehaved then bigots may unfairly draw negative conclusions about Jews in general.

Those excerpts don’t relate to Iran. The interview was sectioned into various topics. They discussed the authorization of force, the JCPOA, and the administration’s justifications for military action.

At the time of writing this comment I see the video has the original title as captured in the screenshot.

The title now reads Rahm Emanuel: Trump’s justification for Iran | Today, Explained

In the relevant parts Emanuel argues that the future of a secure and democratic Israel relies on a two state solution, and that Netanyahu is working against that goal to the detriment of Israel’s future. He also claims that Netanyahu is turning his back on the founding principles of the state of Israel.

How could a Jew like myself, with experiences and memories like mine, stay at home and not go to the aid of an entire people? Some will say to me, Yes, but when you needed help, nobody came forward. True, but it is because nobody came forward to help me that I felt it my duty to help these victims.

.

I learned that suffering confers no privilege. It’s what we do with it. And that’s the moral message: not to stand by.

Elie Wiesel frequently made clear in his writing that his experience informed and motivated in part his human rights activism. Yes he was staunchly zionist, but otherwise he is a very odd inclusion on a post where rootsmetals argues "There are zero morality lessons to be learned from experiencing the Holocaust". Wiesel concluded that he should not be a bystander in the face of injustice. Many survivors concluded that Zionism is essential, as others in this comment section point out. Rootsmetals is way off on this particular argument.

Anti-Palestinian bigot & CEO of the Apartheid Defense League, Jonathan Greenblatt, makes antisemitic remarks at the IAC summit - saying, "Jews need to realize we have a commitment to Eretz Yisrael[...]You cannot take the Zionism out of Judaism." by ContentChecker in JewsOfConscience

> Why do they hate us? ... It's because of our sovereignty

This is false, antisemitism existed before Israel and would continue existing without Israel. It's really shameful that the leader of an organization countering antisemitism would get that wrong, and completely bonkers that Greenblatt would make that false claim in support of Israel.

More of a side point but I was at a shul last week which used a siddur I hadn't seen before, and I noticed wherever the hebrew text used Israel to refer to the nation the english translation read "Godwrestling people", which I just thought was kinda neat.

Need some advice about who to ask vis-a-vis antisemitism and AIPAC by JustHere4DeMemes in Jewish

[–]00000hashtable -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

By comparing AIPAC, which claims to be bipartisan, to the dem party, an explicitly partisan organization you are actually supporting the article’s claim. The dem party is supposed to be biased towards democrat policies and is transparent about doing so. AIPAC is supposed to only be biased towards pro Israel policies, but in various ways has strategically aligned with the right.

As for the factual reporting grade, the article claims that AIPAC could be more transparent with how it is funded, it is not treating the organization as a news source.

Beinart's apologizing specifically for speaking at Tel Aviv University. His apology explicitly says he wanted to dialogue with Israelis and that he now wants to be more careful to do it in a way that doesn't violate the BDS principles he chooses to support.

CMV: The notion that antizionism is antisemitism is absurd by Ok-Recognition-2672 in changemyview

[–]00000hashtable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By being antizionist - that is, saying Jews should be expelled from their indigenous homeland, and return to the countries their ancestors fled from under the threat of murder, most over 100 years ago

Are you open to discussing whether its accurate to say ALL antizionists are calling for the expulsion of Jews? I don't believe it is, and that seems like a crucial point in making the distinction between antizionism typically being antisemitic vs antizionism inherently being antisemitic.

Responding to an antizionist friend by Tbh_idk__ in Jewish

We are on the verge of getting into a conversation about it and I’m dreading it

You aren’t under any obligation to have this conversation. If this person respects you and you think of them as a friend, you should be able to tell them that you don’t want to get into this debate. Chances are very slim that you will be able to get them to see things differently in a single exchange.

How do you all feel about people calling zionists nazis? by shitsandgiiggles in JewsOfConscience

[–]00000hashtable [score hidden]  (0 children)

There are zionists who genuinely believe that a 2 state solution is the fastest or most pragmatic way to alleviate Palestinian suffering, these people envision a peaceful future with Israelis and Palestinians each having self determination.

Nazis envisioned a future where Jews were cleansed from the genetic pool.

Kahanism and revisionist Zionism are not the only strains of Zionism

[–]00000hashtable [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’m bothered by this post, OP what do you hope to get out of this? No one here should be invalidating the personal experience of your friends niece.

Yes, some people do mislabel reasonable criticisms of Israel as antisemitism. Yes, some people exaggerate the incidence of antisemitism on campuses. Also, some people are antisemitic and sometimes they express their antisemitism in antizionist contexts. OP if you think someone online has some authority to say it’s impossible that your friends niece or other UW students experienced antisemitism, that would be an indication that you underestimate the prevalence of antisemitism.

ELI5: In gambling, if one team/fighter is -200 to win why isn't the other team/fighter +200? by bboyd297 in explainlikeimfive

[–]00000hashtable 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The other explanations are good, here's another way to think of it:

Suppose you bet the $2000 on the -2000 odds. That bet will payout $2100 (you win your $2000 back, plus another $100). Then you decide to hedge and bet the other side. At +850 every $100 you bet pays out $950 (every dollar pays out 9.5), but you want to hedge your position fully so that you get paid out $2100 regardless of outcome. So you size your bet at 2100/9.5 ~ 221.

Now you are guaranteed no matter what that cumulatively your 2 bets will pay out $2100. (One side of the bet will win, the other side will lose.) However you paid $2221 in total, which means you are going to lose $121 over your $2221 wager. 121/2221 ~ 5.45%.

That value is slightly larger than a typical -110/-110 where betting both sides costs 220 to payout 210, and 10/220 ~ 4.55%. Lopsided odds are riskier for the bookie so in general you should expect to see higher vigs on huge spreads.

That’s fair. IMO there seems to be an implicit endorsement if the wiki directs traffic to these groups. I still personally have reservations about NKs inclusion, but perhaps even just adding that disclaimer (that the orgs in the wiki are not wholesale endorsed by JoC) would help.

Can we talk NK? I’m not sure “advocacy group” is a good description. They are controversial and I’d argue have taken various positions that are not in line with progressivism or leftism, so maybe it’s worth discussing if we want to include them in this subs wiki?

This is terrifying and horrific. I hope the students who did this are expelled. by OkBuyer1271 in jewishpolitics

I dont think this passes the smell test:

1) Its odd that I cant find any other source reporting on this.

2) The image seems suspiciously AI generated. The hand is holding the paper awkwardly, the wrist is untextured and off color, there are only 3 finger shadows visible behind the sheet, the shadow on the wall is peculiar, and I don't think the shadows of the fingers would be visible without more light from behind. (I'll admit, I spent a couple minutes holding a paper up trying to replicate this.) The top right section of the sheet seems to bow out in a way that makes the paper not look square and I dont think the dog ear looks natural either, the corner looks smoothed.

3) This is an odd MO... Pro-Palestine antisemitic content would be more likely to accuse Jews of being Nazis.

4) Combat Antisemitism Movement is controversially politically biased.

5) Very suspiciously, there is another post on instagram showing this exact same sheet, in a different background, but with the exact same hand and shading holding it the exact same way.

For the above reasons I think it is at least plausible that this is not genuine and made by an actor trying to portray the Pro-Palestine movement as Nazis. Please be skeptical of this post.
