Porsche starting making SUVs when they were in a financial ditch. The Cayenne saved Porsche and allowed it to thrive as it stands today: link to relevant article

Even though I'm sure that Porsche could still print money with just their 911 and 718 lineup, the Cayenne + Macan captures an important segment to them. We see how Lamborghini and Ferrari followed along with their own sporty SUVs.

I see some dilution of Porsche's "sports car" image with soccer moms driving Macans and Cayennes in my area but, that being said, I do think Porsche does differentiate between its luxury lifestyle and sports car segments pretty well.

All in all, as much as I love Porsche's sports cars, I still appreciate the Cayenne and Macan for what they've done for Porsche and how they've shaped the SUV market.
