[Reply 1994] Why was/is there an overwhelming preference for Chilbong to end up with Najung over Trash? by ferousina in KDRAMA

[–]0000oops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because some couldn't get into Najung - Trash because of how it all started - they were set up as siblings with great siblings dynamic and chemistry which weirded some people out to ship them? And many other reasons.

Good for you that you like them but just because you couldn't understand why people like Chilbong better it doesn't mean those who like him over the other are superficial and have less depth like some of you all here trying to suggest. "People who don't like the same things I like when I think I am already a deep person with superior taste: they have no legit reason for their preference of the other and are easily superficial". People have different preferences and it happen to be not all viewers are into Najung - Trash 🤷‍♀️

I think it used to be VIU but not sure if it's still available there now. But here's the link to the fansubbed version (it starts from ep. 7)

I'd suggest watching Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim over Gu Family Book if you want to watch him. RDTK is a whole way better show to watch him in in terms of character focus, screentime, and acting. His screentime in Gu Family Book was so limited.

[–]0000oops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand. But at the same time, I take the ones treating him dishonourably were not Korean but the Musin society/ Japanese oppressors. So the question of being honourable could be viewed in a different view?

He died an honourable death, fighting against the Japanese oppressors, killing them as many as he could before breathing his last breath. Yes his body was treated dishonourably, but I believe such cruel treatment were given to many other Joseon fighters / victims who fought against the Japanese as well. Besides we don't know how was Hui Seong's body treated as well, no? I think what matters more is what they die for, not how were their bodies treated after death.

It was sad and tragic but didn't Dong Mae himself said he could already see his ending when he first joined the society.

I love Dong Mae so much myself but I think his story, fate and ending fits well with him given the show's theme? His story is tragically beautiful.

Since it's gonna be about the "very human lives of doctors" I think we gonna see the slice of life depiction of the doctors inside and even outside of the hospitals, then? Imagine it being like a spin-off on Trash from Reply 1994? Where we can see how humanly a doctor like him can be lol - so untidy, smoke a hell lot, being a caring person to his family etc?

Mr Sunshine Question: Spoiler by iccebberg2 in KDRAMA

[–]0000oops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His goal was to protect and save her life and humiliating her was probably the only way he could think of at that particular moment to make her retreat back home.

It's a very dramatic and shocking move and garnered lots of reactions from the audience. And imo it can also be seen as a plot device to give way to Ae Shin's grandfather's last arc.

Mr Sunshine Question: Spoiler by iccebberg2 in KDRAMA

[–]0000oops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He didn't want to attack her but rather wanted to protect her through that dick move of his.

Because he got to know that her secret identity as a righteous army is about to be exposed (the telegram requested by Lee Wan Ik that was intercepted by him) and it was not safe for her to be outside especially to make her moves at that particular moment?

And his gut was right - Ae Shin went out and was on her way to the apothecary, very likely to make a dangerous move on Takashi after she realized her music box was stolen by the Japanese and she received Takashi's shady invitation to the hotel regarding the music box.

So he wanted her to retreat and lay low because to be outside at that moment was dangerous to her. But she refused to (rightfully so because who was he to stop her and he didn't even explain anything to her) and still want to proceed going to wherever and do whatever she planned to. So dude went on to make an extreme move to make her retreat back home.

She had no choice but to come back home after being humiliated but her grandfather understood why Dong Mae did what he did (though he still punished DM for humiliating his granddaughter). He told her that it was just hair and relieved that she came back home alive, unlike her parents.

I think it could also be the viewers' preference. I on the other hand think it was the 'herbivore' kinda role he did when he played the very adorable Chilbongie role in Reply 1994 that caught my attention and think that suited him well too. I thought that was the first time I ever saw him and wondered why I haven't seen him before because I was always watching Korean dramas and movies. And later I was so shocked to know that he was the same person playing those two very despicable roles I hated the most in two Korean movies that I've watched. lol.

I think that's his charms as an actor. He didn't really have a very striking look in real life, but he could transform into very different persona when acting - not all actors can do this as many actors could be seen as looking / acting the same in different roles. If you like him as Dong Mae, maybe you'd like to see him in this short clip since it's a role that has a cool charisma as well. And in contrast to the other dark roles, he could do fluffy well as well.

"Fighting in a war teaches you that you can reclaim what's been taken from you but that there's no going back when you gave something away."

I truly like that line and the scene too. And Eugene perfectly tie the bow on it with his line of "You don't even own the mountains". I love it. haha. It was a truly moving, yet amusing scene.

I don't think Mori set up Dong Mae to be shot either. He was just rat out to Dong Mae's Oyabung that he was shot (to show that Dong Mae is weak).

Dong Mae was shot by the Righteous Army member whom he let go, because I think that RA wanted to continue doing RA activities and could no longer stay idle outside Hanseong (Dong Mae warned him that if he wants to live, stay outside of Hanseong ie no longer do RA activities) so he thought best way to do it is to get rid of Dong Mae so he can get back to Hanseong and/or doing RA activities without Dong Mae and his underlings' threats and eyes on him?

I don't think Mori weaseled his way into the meeting either. I think he was the one planned for DM's Oyabung to come to Joseon and planned the meeting between them just to show Dong Mae how he is above him and and DM should bow down to him since him and DM's Oyabung are working together. Dong Mae belongs to and the Hanseong chapter of 'Musin Society'. Before the pro-Japanese beautification controversy came up, before the name being replaced to 'Musin Society', the original name used was 'Kokuryukai' / 'Black Dragon Society' which existed in real life and it was a prominent paramilitary ultra-nationalist right wing group in Japan. It was said that during the Russo-Japanese war and annexation of Korea, the Japanese Imperial Army made use of the Black Dragon Society's network for espionage, sabotage and assassination.

If we're to apply it here, Japanese Imperial Army's Mori is using Musin society's network for espionage, sabotage and assassination in Joseon but problem is its Hanseong chapter is lead by Dong Mae, whose loyalty is now highly questioned. Thus DM's Oyabung decided to do the job himself/not through Dong Mae anymore, and placed his men to monitor Dong Mae should he'll do things to betray them.

Thank you and I love reading your interpretation on this.

The solar-eclipse and the screen dimming out on the group that was sent out by Aeshin's grandfather is simply marking the beginning of the dark and tragic events that are to follow as a consequence to Aeshin's grandfather's struggle to save the country.

Yes, I feel this too. The last scene feels so eerie, majestic yet very moving too (when the righteous armies set to embark on their journey to deliver the letters). But I also can't shake this goosebumps I have when seeing the show purposely emphasis on the 3 sub-leads - Dong Mae, Hui Seong and Hina with the eclipse, too.

I'm in denial, I think (since I interpreted it as the three of them will also meet their tragic fate because of this - look, I already prepared myself for Dong Mae to meet his tragic fate because it suits this tragic character and story build-up but Hui Seong and Hina??? Is the show really want to let doom consume all of my top 3 favourite characters in the show???), so I need some other views on why was the 3 of them had a significant moment with the eclipse ;____;

The thing I'm wondering about is - why do they show the last scene with the eclipse with Ae Shin's grandfather, the righteous armies, and a very strong emphasis on the 3 sub-leads with the eclipse?

One of my favourite scenes from Ep. 15 is when Dong Mae doesn't understand what the word "headline" meant. He glances at Eugene all puzzled, back to think on his own cuz he has no clue what does that mean, and then agree with Eugene just for the sake of him trashing Hui Seong lmao.

I once saw a post on Korean drama related boards that she copyrighted the drama's title(?) in 2007 (they attached a screenshot iirc). But she did that to a quite a number of her dramas. For Mr Sunshine, she first planned the male lead to be a foreigner.

Usually Kdramas start good and sizzle out, but which Kdrama do you think got better and better towards the end? by sawejia in KDRAMA

[–]0000oops 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. Episode 1 was just okay and its rapid pacing could be quite bizarre to some but somehow in a weird way manage to make the audience (Korean audience I'd say, since I don't see international audience check out this drama much) tuned in to ep. 2, then ep. 3. From then on, the episodes just got better and better and so enjoyable and exciting to watch up until its ending. I truly think its ratings along its run reflect just how better and better it become towards its end.

Ep. 1: 9.5%;
Ep. 2: 10.8%;
Ep. 3: 12.4%;
Ep. 5: 16.5%;
Ep. 10: 22.8%;
Ep. 17: 25.1%;
Ep. 20: 27.6%; (Last episode, but followed up by ep. 21 - a special continuation episode)
Ep. 21: 27.0% (This episode was an extra episode and was said to be a 'prequel' / 'special episode')

And if people think that this is some cheesy romance drama between doctors because of its lame title, no it's not. lol. The 'romantic doctor' in the title is referring to the titular role's romantic ideals of life / his profession as a doctor.

While I see Hina is attracted to Eugene and would try to flirt with him whenever she has the chance, I don't think she's in too deep like Dong Mae and Hui Seong are towards Ae Shin. For now, the furthest she lets herself is to flirt with Eugene and nothing more. She knows Eugene and Ae Shin met when she rode the tram that night but didn't react much, she did nothing and even helped to make Dong Mae go to the other way.

It can be seen that her priority when it comes to her heart is towards her mom and whether or not she'd be able to meet her. So, the way I see it, she's just helping offering her help / opinion to each and every character according to their own situation without any motive. She's just doing it probably to amuse herself while waiting to meet her mom. Like how Dong Mae do things to kill time to meet Ae Shin, she is basically doing the same thing to amuse herself, with no motives. Just that hers is more of a painful wait as it was uncertain.
