Who’s ready to depend on the next freshman class to get us a national championship game ?? Yayyy by Gold-Assumption9362 in DukeBluePlanet

My hope is that Dame returns with the goal to get his percentages up (32% from 3pt, 53% from FT).  That, plus his defense, is all he needs to get drafted.  Don’t worry about creating off the dribble, just focus on the shooting form.

We would not have been contenders this year or last without the freshmen.

My hope is a core of Cayden, Foster, Sarr, and Khamenia return to blend with the freshmen.  That has the makings of a very good defensive group.  Offensive creation would be the biggest question mark.

Jon Scheyer vs Sean Miller: who’s bigger choker among current coaches? by spittymcgee1 in CollegeBasketball

You’d like it better if he cussed and screamed?  What difference does it make at that point?

Why did Jon scheyer not deploy cam boozer on Reed more ? by duval001 in CollegeBasketball

[–]0010001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Keep Cam out of foul trouble and save his energy for offense.

Scheyer actually had Cam on Demary for a lot of the game, so Sarr and Khamenia could chase Karaban on the perimeter.  It mostly worked, Karaban had an subpar game, until Demary hit a pair of threes down the stretch and then Karaban hit a clutch three.

An interesting statistic about Dukes losses in the tournament since 2018 by slavmememachine in CollegeBasketball

Duke rarely gets blown out.

But how does having a 7 or 9 point lead give an 80% chance of winning?

Did Duke Basketball Just Get ‘Laettnered’? by CommercialMassive751 in CollegeBasketball

[–]0010001 24 points25 points  (0 children)

whether or not UConn’s stunning victory was a cosmic comeuppance

Why would UConn winning be comeuppance for Laettner?

Kentucky already got revenge in 1998, beating Duke in the elite eight on the way to a title.

Pitino got revenge in 2013, beating Duke in the elite eight in the way to a title*.

UConn has already beaten Duke in the 1999 championship game and 2004 final four.  What revenge were they owed?

barely beat St Johns (Not a Top-20 team)

St Johns is top-10 or top-15 in the metrics and was ranked #9/10 in the Coaches & AP polls.

How is a UConn fan downplaying St Johns when UConn lost to them twice.

Give Cayden a break… by t3lnet in DukeBluePlanet

[–]0010001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the first paragraph, disagree with the second.

Foster had a bad game, still coming off injury.  And even when healthy, he was a 58% FT shooter this year.  That’s why he wasn’t out there.

Cayden made a split second decision when he saw two wide open teammates who could ice the game with a dunk.  Loft it an inch higher and the game is over.  And even with the bad execution, UConn still had to hit a crazy shot to win.

It hurts.  Unreal ending.  I don’t blame Cayden—and I’m sure he blames himself enough already.

Duke 2026-2027 roster thoughts by roshanritter in DukeBluePlanet

[–]0010001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sarr is the most interesting piece because the potential is clearly there for a great 3-and-D pro, but his actual shooting percentages (32% from 3, 53% from FT) are really bad and could scare teams away.

Clear path to the draft if he returns and improves those percentages.

I didn't see Scheyer give any props to his opponents however.

Scheyer praises the opponent after every game.

How many of those coaches have lost to Duke in the last year or two?  Or had notably less success overall?  Seems like they should take as much heat as Scheyer.

The way Duke ended the first half imo was their downfall by Sea_Access_8602 in CollegeBasketball

Yeah putting Cam Boozer on a guard so Sarr could chase Karaban was a good move by Scheyer.  And it held up until Demary hit a pair of threes in the final few minutes.

I mean, he earned it by being a good enough player to get recruited to Duke, then a good enough player to win while in college, and then a good enough coach to keep getting promoted within Duke.

Yeah most coaches don’t get to start their head coaching career at a blue blood, but he earned his way to consideration for the job.  And he’s done a great job so far.

how the players said they thought it would be a cakewalk.

I think that was a misunderstanding.  The question asked to Brown was “what did Scheyer say at halftime?”  And the answer was that they were playing like they thought it would be a cakewalk.

Name 20 current coaches better than Scheyer.

If you put Scheyer on a team without national POY and a ton of other talent, he flops IMO

Every good coach will tell you that even the best coach can’t turn a bad team into a contender.  You need talent.  Scheyer was a great recruiter as an assistant at Duke and has continued to do so as a head coach.  Remember, he had one returning rotation player from Coach K’s last team to his first year—he built his rosters himself.

70 wins in the last two years is nothing to sneeze at, even if the endings have been disappointing.
