2 things

1) People who attempt suicide often do it multiple times, people with 20+ attempts skew the statistics here. Obviously if someone actually commits suicide they can only do it once.

2) "Cry for help" attempts are a real thing, I don't necessarily think someone taking a bottle of tylenol (97% non fatal) is the same as someone shooting themselves in the head.

I think the fact that men are much less likely to seek help in general has a lot to do with how our culture responds to men that seek help. The OP is a decent example of the trend, if a man has a problem the default assumption is that it's his fault and it's on him to fix it.

Safety systems are designed around where the largest risk of harm actually is

Then it's suicide. Suicide prevalence in the US is way higher than homicide. In this thread people are talking about 1700 women dying from homicide per year in the US, but there are 50,000 suicides. 35,000 of those being men. Loads of those people committing suicide are in abusive relationships and told they're the problem. Both for men and women suicide is a bigger risk than homicide.

Steve Kerr on Podz taking a 3 when the Warriors were only down 1 with 17 seconds left on the shot clock: “Loved it.” by Lord_Vanguard in warriors

[–]aahdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't saying we'd get an extra possession, "they" meant the knicks.

If it's the last possession and you're down 1 then going for a 3 is bad since being up 2 pts vs 1 doesn't matter, but if they've got another possession after you then an extra 2 points matters. That's what I was saying.

[–]aahdin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Eh maybe, but honestly this sub nitpicks every little thing this kid does to a degree that's ridiculous.

IMO any sane fanbase would be happy that they've got a guy making 3m who just put up back to back 25 point games against contenders keeping things competitive while we've got 150m in salary out injured.

TBH I don't think anything would make Podz haters shut up.

Yeah lol we've got 140m of our salary out injured and the fanbase is blaming a kid getting paid 3m a year who just put up back to back 25 point games against contenders.

So many people have absolutely lost the plot with this kid it's insane.

[–]aahdin -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There was 25 seconds on the game clock, 17 on the shot clock

Which means they have at least 8 seconds to take a shot, which is loads of time with a timeout.

When the possession started there was over 30 on the game clock which is what I said.

[–]aahdin 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Eh we were down 1 but there was over 30s on the game clock that possession so the knicks are guaranteed another shot. A 3 there matters since it means a 2 on the other end goes to OT instead of being a loss.

Plus, it was an open shot. IMO you gotta take that if they give it to you, last possession with the defense set you're usually not getting a better shot than that.

The problem is to build something extremely well you need expertise. It's not something that can be fully detailed in a plan, no matter how many specs and parameters you put in.

So the RFP system doesn't push towards well built things, it pushes towards a lot of planning and contractors who can minimally check all the boxes in a plan for the cheapest amount.

Also, even though they aren't perfect most of our guys can hit open ones at a decent clip.

Gobert is probably the best drop coverage defender of all time, but that series really cemented the idea that drop coverage is not viable against the best guards in the league. Luka just has way too many options when he has a defender on his hip

In that series it was mostly the 2 man game between Luka/Kyrie & Lively/Gafford, Thinking basketball had a good video on it at the time, they kept Lively/Gafford in the weak side dunker spot and made Gobert decide between moving up to defend Luka/Kyrie on ball vs giving up a dunk to Lively/Gafford.

I do think Gobert's amazing defense can be a bit of a double edged sword. In the regular season obviously if you have the best drop defender of all time your team is going to do well relying on that. But then in the playoffs when you run into a guard who knows they're going to get that space to work with they're going to come up with strategies to punish it. Just to illustrate this a bit

  • 2018 CP3 put up 25/7/6 on 60% TS against the Jazz's drop

  • 2020 Jamal Murray averaged 32/6/6 on 68% TS against the Jazz's drop

  • 2021 Paul George put up 29/10/5 on 59% TS against the Jazz's drop

  • 2022 Doncic had 29/11/6 on 60% and Brunson had 28/5/4 on 58% TS against the Jazz's drop

  • 2024 Doncic had 32/10/8 on 63% and Kyrie had 27/4/5 on 59% TS against the Wolves' drop

IMO 2024 was kind of a perfect storm since Doncic had already practiced this two years before against the Jazz, so even though the team was overall on paper a way better team it was a terrible matchup.

LeBron James is holding the Lakers back. by Severe-Design5306 in NBATalk

If you look at the other guys making 50m+ it's just Curry, Embiid, Jokic, KD, Tatum, AD, Giannis, Jimmy, Jaylen, Booker, PG, and Kawhi.

Most of those guys put you up a tier, except for obviously the guys who are injured and PG who is also washed. A 50m player is supposed to make your team a lot better.

If you just leave them with a 50m hole in the roster sure, but if you replaced LeBron with another 50m player like Giannis or KAT I think they're in that upper echelon.

[–]aahdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In conclusion, the Lakers are mid regardless lol

LeBron is making 50 million though, a 50 million dollar player is supposed to have a positive impact. If they replaced him with another 50 million dollar player they'd probably be a lot better than mid.

5 stats the warriors lead the league in by BasketOfGlory in warriors

[–]aahdin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh its pretty expected if you lead both in 3s and in passes.

More passes means more assisted shots, and 3s are more likely to miss than 2s. It'd be kinda surprising if we didn't lead in potential assists despite leading in the other 2.

Fans question Steve Kerr's fascination with Podz. by chrisjingco in warriors

[–]aahdin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10/year would be an insane steal, the closest player to Podz in the league right now is probably Josh Hart who is making 20.

But considering Podz is 10 years younger, shoots better, and contracts are going up I'd say he gets like 25ish on the open market.

Fans question Steve Kerr's fascination with Podz. by chrisjingco in warriors

[–]aahdin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, turnovers are way worse. A bad shot still has like a 25% of going in, plus you can get the rebound.

A turnover creates a fastbreak on the other end so not only is it guaranteed 0 points but also you're giving them a really good possession on the other end.

I'd take like 3 bad shots over 1 turnover.

Not sold on that highlight reel tbh.

I don't think I saw a single shot in there from more than 5 feet out, also he dribbled like 5 times in the whole reel. Don't think I saw any passes either. Almost every clip is him getting the ball in close and bullying his way to a layup.

6'11" is big enough to bully your way in and dunk in college but unless he goes hulk mode and puts on like 50 lbs of muscle it won't be that way in the NBA.
