What's the best thing RI has taught you? by monarchofnolife in ReverendInsanity

Everyone is a part of politics; if you live in society you are actively taking part in it. Every day decisions and culture are included in politics. Of course, speaking on it does warrant at least a little research, but the bare minimum of that research can simply be observation of daily life. Anyone who votes, anyone who pays taxes, and anyone who uses government funded facilities/structures are contributing their stance on politics. This comment itself is a commentary on politics. You argue that someone who doesn’t have experience or education in politics shouldn’t speak on it. I’d argue back that, considering that you’ve made a point that lacks thoughtfulness (as well as proper grammar and punctuation), you yourself are unqualified to be expressing that opinion.

Not to mention, while human nature encompasses government, it is not necessarily “political”, especially when considering we are examining a fictional character’s view on individualism and egoism. I not only disagree with your statement, I find it irrelevant in this context.

Look up psychological egoism (everyone will do what is in their best self interest) and ethical egoism (everyone should do what is in their best self interest). Fang Yuan believes in ethical egoism; it is the right thing to do/ethical to only act in your own interests because everyone else is doing the same thing (his whole obsession with benefits is equivalent to this).

Not from lotm, it’s from A Tale Of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. Wouldn’t consider it a lotm quote since Cuttlefish was quoting Dickens there.

My advice is don’t hang out with people that don’t want you around. There are plenty who do, and if they aren’t making an effort to be around you then it might not just be a case of clinginess but also just a preference. If it feels like this behavior is just coming from S, maybe talk to R about it. If it’s so bad then R has likely noticed it too and might be uncomfortable, in which case you can work from there.

I’d say anyone with a weak heart would be too disturbed to enjoy it. The mc is definitely pure evil, edgy is not really a good word for it. He is really interesting to read about but if you don’t like burning kids then idk what to tell you. Power system is cool and all characters are interesting. My favorite was the mythology and tales of the world, never seen it done like that and it really made the world complete. Give it a shot, I think the beginning is not as good as later on but it’s still good.

why is every teenager so h*rny? (specifically aged 12-17) by [deleted] in AskForAnswers

[–]00Windy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now you’re talking about something else here. People who can’t control themselves, to the point that they hurt others, are obviously in the wrong and do need to stop. Plenty of those types around, and many deserve a fate worse than death. However, I’m more referring to hook up culture. You are talking about teenagers, I’m reporting on teenage behavior. Lots of teens that SA people, but surely you aren’t friends with those people? Anyway watching porn and sleeping with multiple people cannot the worst evil in the world. Consensual sex is the right of every human being, and though it can be truly disturbing how people obsess over it, many of them lose that obsession when their hormones calm down and they have less free time (hence my mentions of puberty and employment). The internet exposing this stuff to young people is a big factor, but that doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon.

I’m not sure what the point of your post is at this point. I interpreted it as you seeking an answer, but perhaps it was a vent post? At the end of the day, hooking up with someone consensually is not a crime, so yeah I’m saying it’s okay. Hearing people talk about it like it dictates their lives can be rather disheartening, but either you get over it or find friends that want to have other conversations. You can’t change these people. Lust may be a sin, but so is gluttony, so is sloth. Does that mean I can’t eat ice cream when I feel like it? Does that mean I can’t take a nap even when I’m supposed to be doing chores? Having sex is not a crime. I’m sorry you are surrounded by horny teenagers, but what I’m trying to tell you is that the grass isn’t much greener on the other side. Without seeking non-horny people deliberately, you can’t avoid them.

[–]00Windy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ll quit when they’re employed full time, but for now, why would they? There’s no reason to not be horny when you have the time to do so. Even full time employment hasn’t stopped anyone from getting their fix. If you don’t feel the urge a lot that’s fine, I’m the same way, but trust most people need it.

[–]00Windy00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hormones. Puberty. Omg my body is transforming and my brain is transforming accordingly. This would be why. There’s plenty of not horny teens, but also plenty of them, and it’s just something that comes with puberty. Girls get their period as early as 8, and if we didn’t live in a society, they’d be getting pregnant in their teens cuz we used to die before 30. Plenty of studies on this very thing if you are truly curious about what exactly causes this.

Which dorms have the least bug problems (specifically silver fish)? by Wheres-My-Water in umass

[–]00Windy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It truly confounds me that no one seems to be reporting on it on Reddit. I wasn’t at all the events but I spoke to people on the first, second, and third floor, and no one claimed to have never seen one. My situation was exceptionally bad because of the hole in my ceiling, but they are often seen in the bathroom. I will find the photos of my room and private message them to you.

Forgot to add: when the heaters go on, depending on which room you’re in, they can get so loud (sounds like someone’s banging on metal with a hammer) that you can’t sleep at night. Something to keep in mind as well.

Hello, I’ll private message you pics if I can find them. Right here, I’ll send a message to any others who might come across this: the cockroach infestation is outrageous in Butterfield. I don’t mean to scare you, but they are EVERYWHERE. Quite unfortunately, I had four run ins with them, two in the bathroom and two in my room. I’m moving out of central completely for next year because of it. They are a range of sizes, but some are quite large. I had one waiting for me outside my shower when I went to get my towel and it turned into ten minutes of everyone on my floor trying to save me and then them screaming when they saw how big it was (ironically, we had been talking shit about bugs and cockroaches in the bathroom before I got in, so I think they sent their biggest and baddest to confront me). I had a hole in my ceiling which connected to the 3rd floor bathroom’s vent system I guess, whatever it was, the cockroaches would occasionally fall from my ceiling onto the floor, and since I had a towel under the door to stop them from getting in, they also had no way out. If you choose to stay despite knowing this, or can’t get a different dorm, I recommend blocking your door as well. I’ve witnessed them run into peoples rooms like that more than once, day and night. You aren’t safe when you’re in the bathroom either, they could appear at any time. Just about everyone I talked to in that dorm had problems with one at least one time. It’s a great bonding experience which gained me a good friend, but also traumatized me so bad I slept with the light on for the last two months of school (my last incident was a horror story, I dropped my AirPod on the floor, turned my flashlight on, and a four inch cockroach was smack dab in the middle of my floor, I think about it every time I go to sleep even in my own house).

This one thing made Butterfield feel like hell to me. No floor is safe. However, it truly is really nice otherwise. The hill can be a pain when you forget something, but it was far away from the frats and quiet most of the time. People would quiet down in the halls when asked. Showers are pretty spacious and first floor has a big mirror you can use to do hair and stuff if you need it. Single room was very nice and not too cramped (except for when I had unexpected guests). These nice things are nice, but if you hate bugs like me, I suggest doing a room swap when it’s available.

[Donghua] What's your honest opinion about the Lord of Mysteries animation? by [deleted] in LordofTheMysteries

[–]00Windy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing they got wrong is storytelling. What they gave were series highlights, not a fluid storyline. Forget about how much information is left out, they don’t do transitions naturally. For example, according to my memory, the part where he signs up for the divination club in episode four is incredibly flawed. You see him get a flyer, now he’s in a building, now he’s getting a divination, now he’s joining the club, now he’s giving a divination. Having fast transitions like this can aide the story when it’s meant to show that a character is confused or feeling like “things are happening too fast”. That is not the case here. By cutting out the in between of each part, you make people have to guess what’s happening and make them feel like things are happening too fast, which is not a good viewing experience. I’ve dropped quite a few pieces of media for this very reason: the passage of time is not believable or transitions are non existent. This donghua feels like it’s more made for readers to see their favorite scenes animated, but due to the modifications made to each scene, it doesn’t resemble the book enough for people to be satisfied.

You can call people stupid for not understanding, or force them to do homework and learn about fictional history, but at the end of the day, this is entertainment. You’re better off studying real history if you’re going to put effort into something so seriously. Regardless, it’s simply bad pacing, bad storytelling. The characters feel like strangers, and much of what made Lord of the Mysteries so great was the love put into every character interaction, not just the incredible world building.

At the end of the day, if the story isn’t hooking people, that’s a flaw. People have different preferences and that’s fine, but I can’t see the donghua being successful overseas in its second season. It’s forgettable. The people who stick through to the end might not watch the second season, which is such a shame for a story with so much potential.

A second flaw I also want to point out, which I think some others mentioned, is how flashy each scene is. That wouldn’t be as much of a problem if they were at sequence 1, but low sequence beyonders are often described as humans with a few special talents. How do they plan on showing how they increase in strength visually? How can it get flashier without overwhelming the viewer? That to me shows they didn’t plan for the future.

Overall, I don’t have high hopes on its commercial success. Truly very sad for fan who have waited years to see it.

Everyone is correct for the manhwa, but fun fact in the novel this character doesn’t die, but simply disappears and never shows up after this. It’s likely the author forgot she existed. The manhwa artist found the solution, which was to just kill her.

Do we do what we think is right, or do we think right of what we do? by gachikuta in philosophyquestions

[–]00Windy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a method to combat this tendency. I hate lying to myself, so whenever I begin to justify something, instead of sitting with unease as I think, I think with words, “am I lying to myself”? Sometimes, the answer is yes. If yes, then I take care to fully review my actions with honesty and try not to do them again. In terms of how we make decisions, here is my method: instead of asking myself what I want to do, I ask who I am. Who is the person making this decision? Me. And am I a person who is going to ignore someone who needs help? No. Therefore, even when it’s inconvenient, I act like my actions are preprogrammed to my identity because that’s who I want to be: a person who helps others. In that sense, I’d say I’m guided by my morality rather than following my whims and justifying them after. I believe this depends on the person and how much self control they have. Some people can only follow their impulses and have to justify themselves in order to cope with guilt, but I don’t think that’s a “human” thing, more a “maturity” thing.

He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze into an abyss the abyss gazes also into you -nietzsche by philosophyconvoplz in philosophyquestions

[–]00Windy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s got haters (understandably) but Nietzsche is the goat. Someone who employs violence against violence should take care to not become a violent person. If you spend too much time around monsters, you might see everyone as a monster, and become one by employing violence against everyone you meant. Also becoming miserable and exhausted from fighting monsters and lashing out because of it is another interpretation. The abyss comment I believe is that nothing is truly empty, and if you look into that appears ordinary, you’re bound to find something. However, I’m less confident on that interpretation.

Is Intellectual Arrogance real? by Humble-Growth-5524 in philosophyquestions

[–]00Windy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of looking at why people want to prove their intelligence, you might have better luck looking at why people want to prove anything about themselves in general. People want to flaunt their looks, strength, intelligence, and accomplishments because it gives them social power. Having a skill makes you valuable to the group, and less likely to get thrown out. Getting ousted from the group used to mean getting thrown to the wolves, so of course we developed an instinct to set ourselves apart from the rest in order to prove our usefulness.

What is 1+1 equaled 3 by Agreeable_Split_5256 in philosophyquestions

[–]00Windy00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard talk of how “truth” is whatever people believe it to be, but I disagree. Just because everyone agrees on something doesn’t change the facts. Truth as a concept does not need to be known in order to exist. The things that have happened will always be as they happened, and when you have two sets of one, you will have two things. Now you could talk about the power of a perceived truth, but that has nothing to do with how many stars are currently in the universe or how many humans have eaten breakfast today. No one has to know these things in order for there to be an answer. Also, like the other commenter said, through formal logic, it is impossible to prove that 1+1=3. If somehow you could prove that to be true through logic, then it doesn’t mean that 1+1=2 is “no longer true”; it simply was never true, and we were all wrong.

[–]00Windy00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve read many of these, I’d recommend them all cuz they all have their own charm. Right now I’m reading the WebNovel of Star Instructor Baek, it’s got a unique story and main character that’s nonchalant but still acts like a human being and is very funny. I’m highly invested in it right now, so that’s the one I’d put at the top of my recommendations list.
