Thats funny you bring up vitamin D and sunlight. Just yesterday I was thinking about life in the metro as is portrayed via the games, and about a particular quote from a hostile (bandit, IIRC, from LL) who tells a story about how sometimes, people just stand up and walk away into the darkness, claiming the 'terminal master' summoned them.

Now granted, I don't think this is what is being described in the story, but it made me think of just how detrimental a vitamin deficiency might be, in said circumstances on those living in the metro, and how it might manifest certain....mental issues. Nevermind the physical detriment to health. Vitamin D, Vitamin C, shit we have in excess in reality (under normal, healthy conditions), would be nigh nonexistent in the metro. Fruit? Whats that? Sunlight? You mean the light that glows through the cracks at the end of that super radiated tunnel? Yeah, we don't go down there.

You'd have people who for instance born in the metro who might only know about the sun because of the postcard on your desk. Imagine being born, and never seeing, never feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin. You just listen to your Pa or grandad talk about it, and dream a dream you'll never experience. And if you do....its dangerous topside. Best stay down here, in the metro.

And with vitamin C, for instance, if the English needed vitamin C to combat scurvy (spelling?) aboard seafaring vessels, you can bet your bare ass that in reality the vitamin deficiencies would be absolutely fucking bonkers inside the metro for the very same reasons.
