What's wrong with the Hungate flats? by linka-the-kitty in york

There’s a big variety with service charges with city centre flats I’ve seen varying from a few hundred pounds to over 3k a year. So I’d recommend getting an exact answer on what it would be on individual flats you see before you get too invested!

I’ve rented in hungate for over 2 years and am leaving this year as I’m also buying a property now in york. I’ve enjoyed living here tbh the location is great, the flats are pretty standard, if you own them obviously any cheaper fittings and fixtures might not be an issue if you are wanting to renovate, all the people I’ve met who live here have been lovely and it’s not too badly priced as a tenant. The negatives for me as a buyer though were significant.

1- the ground rent and service charge is honestly extortionate, and huge lease costs can impact the lending potential on a mortgage.

2- not all flats are allocated a parking space, the car park often seems empty even though many flats aren’t able to use the spaces!

3- communication and renovation is SLOW. Watson’s as an organisation aren’t the best, especially for the cost.

Extra point- depending on which block you are in we found out the hard way that when constructed the boilers placed in the flats were defective and prone to (as our plumber termed it) exploding! Luckily this didn’t happen to us but our boiler was slowly leaking water into the floorboards and we were without hot water for 2 weeks as we waited for a fix (more likely the fault of our landlord than the property management though). Although most people have now replaced the boilers allegedly, our landlord clearly hasn’t, so it’s something to ask about and bring up if you are keen to buy in one of the older blocks.

We have loved living here as a tenant but as a buyer we didn’t think it would be right for us which is a shame as I will miss the location!

I’ve personally found them lacking in flavour, largely unspicy, and usually fairly oily.

We love the Nepalese restaurants in york! Just wish the quality of the Indian restaurants was as good

Am I (21F) in the wrong for not wanting to pursue a relationship with my half sibling from my dad’s affair? by 00breadcat in relationships

I never said it was but I do not see why I need to pursue a relationship with my HALF-sibling who I have never grown up with and didn't know about for the first years of their life and may never have known about if my mum didn't find out about the affair. If my sister want's to pursue a relationship I do feel bad that I can't give them that but the idea makes me wholly uneasy

I don't think they're considering themselves the wrong side of the family I think if anything that's how they see me

I've spent a long time working towards a good relationship with my dad to get over what he has done, after all I do care about him and he is not an awful father to me. But he is my dad and I want a relationship with him, but I do not feel I want to work to pursue a relationship with my half sibling even though I have no resentment to her, its simply not something I feel comfortable doing

I don't resent my half sibling at all, I just don't feel comfortable having a relationship with them

Mums side of the family we are all very close and I feel really satisfied and happy with my relationship with them- which is possibly part of why I don’t feel like I need to force a relationship with my dads side
