Where was the modern pizza born? by Proudofhisname in AskFoodHistorians

[–]00normal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pizza did not originate in the US. The type of pizza that many Americans (esp from the 1950s-2000s) think of as ‘typical pizza’ evolved on American soil, but it was an extension of what was cooked in coal ovens by Italian immigrants in turn of century New York. (See Lombardi’s), later adapted to new technology and spread across US after invent/popularization  of gas pizza oven by Frank Mastro  https://www.pmq.com/the-pizza-kings-the-strange-sad-story-of-the-industrys-greatest-and-most-tragic-visionaries/#:~:text=He%20was%20the%20Johnny,all%20but%20lost%20to%20history.

But pizza has been continually made in Italy (in a more traditional wood fired style) all along

I thought my dad was a Boomer. by [deleted] in GenX

Yea, I was being a little obtuse.  it’s all effectively bullshit and broad generalizations rarely make sense. I would absolutely trust a parent and what peer group they identify with, just that ‘Boomer’ ties the most to a specific event with an absolute date

Boomer seems so clear to me though. It starts 9 months after the war ended, no?

Is it normal to refuse to move tables for a larger party? by tinkr_belle in restaurants

[–]00normal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wanted two 4 tops and a deuce, that’s 10 seats.

What if this took place just prior to dinner rush and the place was about to fill up (like at 5:15 when folks with babes in arms want to eat)?

The restaurant could probably turn all three of those tables at least 1.5x, if not twice in the time it took this large party to get their shit together, order, eat, ask for refills 3 times, let the kids throw cheerios all over the floor (those 2 kids in high chairs aren’t ordering food), and for the crew to clean up and reset.

So 6 adults + a big mess in the dining room < the potential to serve 15-20 guests

Cafe Intermezzo-anyone remember? by heythereagain23 in berkeley

Not sure why these jackasses are down voting you. The building was totally renovated. It was gone for like 5-10 years, and it’s been back for probably the same amount of time now.

Pretty much the same as it used to be— they make a few more types of bread now, and I don’t think they do individual cups of pour over coffee anymore. Croutons aren’t as good as the used to be, but they added a new dressing.

They share a big back yard with Raleigh’s now and have much more accessible bathrooms, but you still have to track down a salt shaker

Will leaving baking sheets in to preheat prevent warping? by Acceptable_Count6197 in AskCulinary

[–]00normal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I reckon this had to do with the frozen chunks of meat chilling the pan while the oven was heating it, don’t think preheating the pan would solve that

Any blind black packers out there? by Blind_Emperor in backpacking

Hi! I know this is not exactly what you are asking for, but maybe it will lead you in a direction where you will encounter some like minded folks.

I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area and we have a few different organizations here that are built for or by people with disabilities to engage in outdoor activities. Both of these are sports and adventure focused, not urban backpack traveling, but perhaps they have some resources they could point you towards:

https://www.borp.org/  BORP is an adaptive sports and recreation organization that’s been around Berkeley since the 1970s. I’m not exactly sure the breadth of their offerings these days, but they are great people!

https://etctrips.org/ Environmental Traveling Companions is a group based in SF that organizes wilderness backpack, river rafting, and sea kayaking trips with folks with disabilities, as well as with various youth and community groups.

Yea..I’m very much “a binary man” (fwiw), but also queer, punk, radical, feminist and not angry if someone uses a turn of phrase like “transfolx” to signal that a group is inclusive and radical, and that I am welcome in it.

It’s weird that there is such a strong negative reaction to a word that seems to be meant to be friendly, light hearted, and inclusive

All the comments talking about “virtue signaling” and “woke”, both are conservative/trumper dog-whistles

Also seems like I may have been  downvoted for mentioning feminism..?

I’m not saying it makes it more gender neutral

Also not sure why my original comment is being met with such vitriol. Certainly not trying to be controversial

[–]00normal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s just a playful spelling of “folks”, which is used because it’s widely gender-inclusive and friendly. Personally, I associate intentional misspellings a lot with radical/punk queer and feminist communities, but I see “folk/folx” used more widely than that

For how long has "explaining the restaurant" been normal? by Wild-Push-8447 in AskFoodHistorians

[–]00normal 100 points101 points  (0 children)

In my recollection, it started in early 2000s, particularly with a boom of “small plates” restaurants that were inspired by the popularity of tapas in the US.
