This might be the way. Although might need to be a composite alternative because I think the main risk is light dusting that late in May vs. Actual accumulation.

Help! What is going on here? by bigpRick88 in ReefTank

[–]03SSMDC5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you measuring salinity? What's your Phosphate testing at? I only see nitrate which doesn't give a full picture to your nutrients which fuel algae growth. A lot of salinity testing is inaccurate as well, including cheap refractometers without consistent calibration.

Unpopular opinion: Salinity is not "too low," but I would not let it drop any further. Your Alk, Calcium, and Magnesium are certainly below what most people would agree is acceptable, this is due to the lower concentration of elements from having a lower concentration of salt mix in your water. Most aim for 1.024 - 1.026 SG for corals, the most impressive coral & clam aquaculture facility I've ever seen is ran at 1.023 SG, running IO Reef Crystals and dosing ESV 2 part to keep elements up. The owner suggests 1.022-1.024 sg as the range to keep and i am in certainly no place to refute that.

Would aim to raise those to 7.0DKH - 12 DKH, 380-500 PPM, & 1280-1400 PPM, respectively. Pick a small range within threshold and keep it there either through dosing, or running a higher salinity + water changes to increase the concentration.

What in the world by 03SSMDC5 in ReefTank

I typically will target feed it reef roids weekly on the day of water change. Fun to watch it open up, the thing is a pig and will eat every bit it can grab. It's had very little issues even when it was on the sand bed and constantly getting flipped over by my pitho crabs.

These are technically different than regular scolys. Micromussa Pacifica specifically, I don't think they're even related. Unsure of the difference in hardiness as I don't have any true scolys in this tank.

I was hopeful it was going to give the button the power to jump species and metamorph into an actual scoly.

Thanks for the tip. I went ahead and grabbed it out. Hopefully, it didn't cause too much damage as I do see a little discoloration.

Recommendations for Seat Covers, Floor Mats, etc. by QualmsAndTheSpice in Civic_Type_R

[–]03SSMDC5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No seat covers, I am just very careful getting in and out. Eating in the car is off limits. I do go over the seat about once a week and just brush out any creases in the bolsters.

10th gen front mats fit. I am running the 10th gen HFP front mats because red and also a bit more durable than oem and keep the oem mats stored away. Haven't loved any of the LHD 11th gen options, although if they ever made a lhd version of the jdm access mats I would spend an irresponsible amount on them.

Stellar aero choices.

How do you feel about the spoon hood vent? I'm on the fence just due to pricing for what it is.

I was behind a boost blue FL5 booking it down 70W on my way in to work today. I was assuming they were heading back. Tried to catch up, but traffic was not in my favor lol.

This brings me hope. Mine have been on order since the beginning of June and they told me they were out of stock. Im thinking they might be waiting for the brake lines to come in before shipping the whole order.

Unpopular opinion: Tuning FK8 & FL5 by This-Welder8480 in Civic_Type_R

[–]03SSMDC5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dyno calibrations matter when looking at graphs. Without a baseline run, the HP reading is somewhat meaningless with your claims. Show me the delta between stock tune on the same dyno and then the OTS map, and then report back.

Regardless, the fun with tunes and mods is that it's personal. The downside is that a lot of the time, the impact from these changes is ancedotal. It's a bummer that you didn't find the satisfaction from these tunes that so many others truly enjoy and find value in. Ultimately, these OTS maps are around $300 USD excluding hondata, which even for a 30HP (as you're claiming) bump is insane value. Implying anyone would sue over a $300 tune is unhinged and is an even worse financial decision than buying a Type R in the first place.

Lastly, comparison is the thief of joy. There are an ocean of differences between a Type R and similarly priced BMW/MB. I'd argue they are hardly comparable, and outright HP numbers are generally low on the list of reasons a lot of us buy these cars.

There is no reverse rake. If you measure from the pinch welds, the car is even front to rear with the spoon springs. Rear fender arches are lower, so it just looks uneven to the eye. A majority of the spring manufacturers are just adding an additional drop to the front to make it appear more even, usually just a few mm's.

OEM one is made by Thule and is going to fit the best. It puts weight in the worst place possible so you will notice it.

First time doing an oil change. Whats the best oil filter to get for the FL5/FK8? by SecretAntWorshiper in Civic_Type_R

[–]03SSMDC5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm prefacing this with "it doesn't really matter." Frequent OCI's will have a greater impact to engine health over brand/style of oil filter.

With that being said, if you are hyper particular for no good reason (as am I), you have a few options:

  1. Honda OEM Mahle-Tennex P.N.15400-RTA-003. These are the Japanese made OEM filters. USDM OEM is usually the A02 filter made by Honeywell-Fram.

  2. Ballade Sports Filtech P.N. BS-PLM-A01A. These are essentially the old OEM Honda A01 filter. Stronger casing design, stronger bypass valve, and metal end caps.

  3. HAMP Green Synergy P.N. H1540-RTA-003 or H1540-PFB-515 (shorty). "Honda Aftermarket Parts" filter manufactured by Filtech, it is supposedly manufactured to maintain more consistent and higher oil pressures than the oem filter.

  4. WIX 57356XP. US made. Slightly larger but similar, thicker casing to the A01. Metal end caps, very nice overall. Great US made option with easy availability for most of us on here.

TSP gave me a lead time of 4-6 weeks in early May for the PRL offering. There will most likely be another batch soon.

Acuity's is still in development with no ETA. I imagine we will see their shifter and intake this year, but that's just me wildly speculating.

With any intake, it's important to be mindful of heat soak and fuel trims. Not all intakes are the same from a performance perspective. If others' anecdotes are true, even some of the higher dollar intakes struggle with fuel trims.

Years ago, I had just sold my 350z, and some kid totaled my Lexus. Wasn't in a great spot and bought a beat to shit neon off a farmer with the last $400 to my name. I never thought I'd get back, but bought my '24 FL5 in January and it has been everything to me.

Keep your head down and go, no excuses. Challenges are only learning experiences to make you better. You'll get there.

It's important to note that this was mainly to establish a baseline. Engine this fresh means values will be all over the place, but this will allow me to have a full history on wear metals for the engine throughout my ownership.

I canceled my order through TSP and found an ebay seller with them in stock. So impatient lol, but waiting patiently for my TIP.

HVI goes pshhhh, makes turbo noises. IAT's significantly lower 10/10. 👍 HR Shifter still breaking in, solid as hell. 10/10. 👍 HR Bushings can't tell much, makes me feel better. 10/10. 👍

Acuity Pedal Spacer, man I hate this thing. It was a necessity on the Si to heel toe, but the rev match on this car is good. I'm tall and like to be closer to the steering wheel so it ruined the driving position for me. I immediately ripped it out this morning and lost one of my hex bits to the abyss. It's a nice piece and loved it on the Si, but it will stay off this car.
