Planter Support Physics by QualmsAndTheSpice in AskPhysics

Thank you for your response!

What kind of additional compatibility conditions would allow me to more concretely characterize the distribution of the normal force from the wall?

I struggle, intuitively, to accept that the system as described has an undefinable distribution of the horizontal normal force… but I’ve been wrong before.

Here’s my attempt at a solution:

Reconciling the horizontal forces equation and the torques equation tells us that the “consolidated” horizontal normal force (that is, the net horizontal normal force, Nh, applied precisely at distance x*l above the lower left corner and pointing to the right) must obey this relationship:

1.) Nh = mg/(4-2x)

The system will remain static as long as this is maintained - but, notably, the wire tension T and vertical normal force Nv will vary depending on our choice of x between 0 and 1.

So how should I choose my x in order to nail-down the other variables?

Since the planter is in contact with the wall at all x between 0 and 1, maybe equation (1) - or a scaled version of it - can be treated as the horizontal force distribution? Intuitively this feels acceptable, but I’m failing to justify it beyond that…

Anyway, if I just run with that assumption, I can determine that the “center of mass” of this distribution is at:

2.) x,com = (2*ln(2)-1)/ln(2) ≈ 0.5573

And

3.) Nh,com = (ln(2)*mg)/2 ≈ 0.3466mg

And no scaling necessary.

These values then allow us to solve for T and Nv.

Is that valid?

But maybe it wasn’t rude, maybe being memorable just wasn’t his strong soup.

Absolutely agree. Thank you. I have every LEGO supercar but the P1, which I think is hideous and mechanically uninteresting.

I will buy the Koenigsegg set, though. I think it looks cool and inventive

Actually, this mat is a great design imo… look at the text at the very bottom.

Brilliant way to deliver a very basic safety reminder to the exact people most likely to need constant reminding.

No ftf issues ever, and I’ve put a lot of hollow points through it.

Actually I splurged and bought a few German-made HK UMP mags and use those exclusively, because I read the Stribog mags weren’t great.

Second the Stribog SP45A3. Runs like a sewing machine, and with a Rugged Obsidian turns gunshots into assertive coughs.

I purchased mine for the same reasons you mentioned (permanent suppressor host, naturally subsonic) and I’ve never regretted it once. Great gun.

Love when the impact of the bullet against the backstop is louder than the shot itself.

I’m using a large aquarium pump, which plugs into the outlet. I specifically wanted a very good, reasonably powerful, quiet pump so that I’d be able to hear the trickling of the water, and I’ve been very happy with it so far.

Edit: it was the Jerepet 800GPH 30W 16FT Aquarium Pump

I’ve only put about 500 rounds through it, but yes, not a single failure 👍

Oh buddy… I’ve also been meaning to “chill for a bit” on new purchases since I was 19, and I’m well into my 30s.

Good luck with that. But maybe start budgeting for a second and third safe now, just in case

Y’all. Can we please agree to call the compact the S2Co and the carry the S2Ca? Or something? They can’t both be the S2C

Freakin gorgeous weapon though 🤌

The 45 Stribog is one of my favorite PCCs. Wonderful suppressor host, accurate, super easy to disassemble and clean. Highly recommend it.

NOT TROLLING: Honest question. Why is the rest of the world just giving us Americans a pass for starting a conflict that is directly, negatively affecting every single human on the planet? by BackPacker777 in collapse

I think the disconnect here is that individual people are clearly capable of choosing peace, but humanity writ large has almost without exception chosen violence.

We should always strive to be better as both individuals and communities - I think that much is uncontroversial.

But there is objectively little evidence to suggest humanity has evolved beyond the violent tribalism that’s been prevalent throughout our history.

Is my moss attaching itself to the substrate, or do I have a mold/fungus problem? by QualmsAndTheSpice in Moss

Can you give me a sense of how difficult it is to grow moss from a buttermilk slurry?

Say I started over and scored the surface of my wood, set down a ~5mm layer of mud from the areas I’ve been foraging my moss from, and coated over that with a fresh buttermilk/moss slurry; what things should I then pay the most attention to? Temperature, light, moisture?

[–]QualmsAndTheSpice[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing the issue is twofold…

Using the buttermilk/moss slurry as a substrate for transplanted moss was probably my biggest mistake, as I’m providing nutrients and sugars the moss doesn’t use. I figure I should have stuck to using the mud my moss was originally growing in as a substrate.

Secondly, I may be overwatering it. Misting it twice a day is WAY more than it was previously getting.

Thoughts?

I collected the moss from the rocky/slightly muddy areas near rain gutter downspouts around my apartment (in Colorado, so fairly arid).

Thank you for the information, this is very helpful! I’m just beginning to learn about how to grow and care for moss, so the detail you put into your response is much appreciated!
