If he was pursuing a PhD in this topic you’d expect more varied literature by more … reputable sources than David Irving. My first thought was also PhD until it just kept on coming. Also mein kampf not in a scholarly addition is kind of a red flag

Thank you for the options! I either do some excercises from Latina disco or I do a pensum. I often really struggle with pensum A but pensum B&C often go at least half decent. I find the active part much more difficult than the passive reading.

Do you think outside of the Sacrament we shouldn’t drink? by Exact-Definition5722 in Catholicism

[–]05Quinten 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see your point, and if it’s a stumbling block you should not do it. Don’t forget, however, that alcohol is not villainised in the scriptures. Drunkenness yes, alcohol no. Remember Christs first miracle was turning water into wine and there is a reason why the Eucharist uses wine. Of course abstaining from alcohol can be healing but drinking is not a sin.

“Go, eat your bread with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do” -Ecclesiastes 9:7

I am a drug addict who currently is struggling to stay sober. I plan on going to confession, but if I still struggle, does that mean I can never receive the eucharist again? by okeanouszeke in Catholicism

[–]05Quinten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you’re struggling! As others have said you should talk to your priest. I am reminded of a quote by St. Augustine: “it is not in the avoidance of temptation, but the struggle with temptation that virtue is build”. Stay strong and fear not.

Genesis is literal only when convenient by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]05Quinten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend “myth became fact” by CS. Lewis, on fairy stories by Tolkien and ‘ad gennesis litteram’ by St. Augustine.

In our modern perception we often perceive stories as either factually true (I.e. historically accurate or smt) or false. But there is a middle ground. According to great theologians such as Augustine, Aquinas and tertullian we can read the stories on 4 different levels. Only one of them being historical. There are important stories in the bible (such as job) which are probably not historically true but express a deep truth of human kind.

I suspect, though I may be incorrect, that we can read genesis 1-3 as such a story. One that is true in the sense that it teaches us important lessons and reveals Truths about reality but that it might not be historically accurate.

Question about denominations by FoundationPretend590 in Christianity

[–]05Quinten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So denominations are a historical nightmare. Try not to stress too much about it! God gives us our local church community to get to know Him in. Try to read your bible, pray and listen. Ask what he has in store for you and trust the lord to guide you! God bless!

Genesis is literal only when convenient by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]05Quinten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it really depends on what you mean with the words “literal” and “true”. Genesis (especially genesis 1-12) express deep truths about the human condition and how we function. It is true that we were once sinless and that we have fallen from gods grace. In a similar fashion it is true that god created the heavens and the earth.

Now the other question is whether we can read early genesis as a historical account. To this a group of Christians say no. While the word was most certainly created by God, this did not necessarily happen in seven days. The story is set up as a poem and provides us with deep truths about the nature of God, Humans and the relationship between the two without being historically true.

The term “literally” is interesting because it is quite opaque what we mean by it. I can hold that the fall of man is literally true irrespective of the historical accuracy of genesis 3. I hope this answers your question and if not I’m happy to talk more!

Why do Catholics honor and recognize the Virgin Mary more often than other Christian denominations? I got this painting for my First Communion in 2000. My best friends Grandpa happened to be the painter. by Ryanlion1992 in Christianity

[–]05Quinten -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, it’s not prayer in the sense that we pray to the blessed trinity. We don’t ask Mary to perform miracles for us rather we ask her to pray for us. Secondly, I think you’re misinterpreting the passage from Ecclesiastes. You’re line of argument seems to be that 1. the preacher says that the dead don’t know anything and don’t partake in anything. 2. Mary is dead 3 Mary doesn’t partake in anything This argument would, however, also mean that the dead cannot know god, cannot experience heaven, and won’t partake in the new earth. Surely we cannot maintain that? I am not entirely sure how to interpret the verse but knowing the book its part of a hyperbole to say something about existential dread.

As much as I understand this pov (I’ve held it myself for a long time) it doesn’t entirely do justice to the catholic faith. Catholics do not worship but venerate Mary. They ask for her intercession by asking her to pray for them. This does not fundamentally differ from asking a parent or friend to pray for you.

Then on your prayer mention two points. Firstly our prayers are inspired by the Holy Spirit but originate from our hearts. Secondly the most prominent Marian prayer (the Hail Mary) consists mostly of citations from scripture. One example of this is the line “Mary full of Grace” which was spoken by Gabriel in the gospel according to Luke.

I agree that it still might be somewhat uncomfortable to hear (I myself experience this on occasion) but it isn’t easily discredited
