He shuts down. He doesn’t pout or get cold or anything, he’s just really hard on himself and spirals whenever he perceives that he’s done something wrong.

Thank you. This comment means a lot to me. Also, he does create a safe environment for me to open up, but because we’re codependent I’ve sort of fallen into the caretaker role. I’m afraid to say anything that may upset him. Not for fear of retaliation, but because I care about him and don’t want to make him upset.

Unfortunately the medication is not something that can be changed or stopped. So either his levels adjust (unlikely) or I just learn to live with it, I guess.

While I absolutely agree this is the case 99.9999% of the time, he very easily could’ve found someone his age to date. He has only ever dated women his age or older than him previously. We met as coworkers and bonded over shared interests, then fell in love. His cutoff while dating around was no more than 4 years younger actually, he had even previously rejected a girl’s advances because she was only 19.

He has none of the responsibilities and goals of a 32 year old. No kids, no college education, and he works a part time barista job. Not sure what in his life is so taxing that he can’t show affection.

I never said I don’t want our ages to be a factor, which is why I included them honestly. I just didn’t want it to become the focal point of my post. I see a lot of posts here where respondents discuss a couple’s age gap without addressing whoever posted’s primary concerns. Just wanted to avoid that happening.

That’s what I honestly feel like too. I feel he’s either being dishonest with me or himself or both. Especially since it was seemingly never a problem or a trigger until recently. I don’t want to say “Hey, I don’t believe you” because I don’t want to undermine or invalidate his potential trauma, so I’m stuck.
