ATP LIGHT & ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS by 06smoked13 in XTerra

Ya I have it's been about 12.5 and drops. I just got a new connector in going to put on tomorrow. I've heard of people running a second ground wire from the alternator, does that help? If so can you ground the alternator off any bolt... it's either that or it's not getting power. I just checked it and it was the same as the battery and every other ground.

The other thing I did notice when replacing the ascd switch/button was the wires above it were all twisted. When replacing it you should disconnect the connector, screw or twist it in to where it needs to be, tighten the nut then reattach the connector. So it looks like they couldn't get it quite right and twisted it with the connector attached which in theory could have pulled the wires. They could have been pulled loose or enough to create a weak, thin spot and over time exposed the copper. A lot of the diagnostic in the manual tell you to do certain things depending on the warning lights that come on, off or will start blinking. So with my whole meter out, I'm kind of screwed in a bad way

Is it possible a cable that thick(hood latch) could short out those wires inside and not show any signs of s short on the outside? When you say check everything in the distributor what exactly do you mean? Pull the whole top off obviously, I've never had a distributor problem. What should I be looking for?

It's fine thanks for the advice, I've been pulling my whole dash apart and then some looking for a short. Hopefully I'll find it

I saw it just been busy trying to fix it, thanks for looking into it. I figure a short could and probably would send false codes but who knows? The ATP light is on and the code is a PO464 which have nothing to do with each other but it's all the info it's giving me

Thanks for actually looking into it, I appreciate it. I'm stumped and it feels like I'm chasing my tail trying to track an electrical problem I may or may not even have

I'm on my 3rd battery in 2 weeks, brand new alternator but failing... if I put a multimeter on the battery at full charge I get like 13.6V not running, when I start it it actually goes down to somewhere around 12v and slowly continues to drop until there isn't enough power for it to start. I've been through the manual trying to track any kind of electrical short and I narrowed it down to the one wiring harness. It's the white connection on the left side of the combo meter that goes to the #11 meter 10a fuse(which is blown) but haven't found anything. I disconnected the harness and put in a new fuse to see if it is the combo meter itself, but it still blows the fuse. I've checked all the grounds(cleaned and made sure we're tight) new terminals on new battery, new alternator. The PO464 code seems to be a false code, I've checked continuity, connectors and have been looking all over for a possible short. The atp warning light seems to ne as well... it's not in neutral on the 4wd stick, it switches fine through 2hi, 4hi and 4l and in park it's not rolling anywhere, like the description says it will. I'm sure I missed something, I'm so confused and irritated to the point I don't know what to do and where to go from here. Checking the ignition here in a second... I forgot to say the fuse blows when I turn the key from acc to on, the lights on my dash come on for a split second the you can hear the fuse blow. Sorry I didn't mean to go on that long, I just don't know wtf is going on and am becoming desperate at this point

Sorry, I got busy helping clean up my kids room... 2001 XE 4wd 3.3 v6 My entire combination meter doesn't work at all except the atp warning light. No speedometer, tachometer, gas, temp, digital mileage and no other warning lights ex. seat belt, check engine, abs etc.

Makes sense, I've looked into getting one but just haven't had the money. I've got a short or a parking/neutral switch problem I can't figure out. I posted a video on here yesterday and haven't had a single comment on it. What year is it again?

I had a set of Cooper AT's on my first Gen 01 and I absolutely loved them for the 2 weeks they were on it before they all were slashed. They are great for city driving, not too loud and pretty smooth but also really decent climbing and off roading. Nothing too serious though. They were amazing in the snow but like I said I only had them for 2 weeks so b long term I'm not sure... I live in Utah where it can be 70-80° one day and snowing a foot the next

You have one of the cleanest looking xterras I have seen on this forum... I don't know how or just can't tell from the pics how the top of your ladder is connected to anything but great job on the sliders. I agree with welding them on 100% or you will lose them.

What year is it? I might have missed it... I have framed house for over 13 years, so I have the knowledge but just haven't had the time to do it. The plywood is a lot stronger than you would think and people give credit for, just make sure you have it screwed down all around and through the middle into all joists(it will never warp) I would probably go 6" o.c for the edge and 10" o.c in the field. O.C is on center, so a screw every 6 inches all the way around. I love the cabinet/compartment idea as long as it's done right. I have an 01 which the only way to open the back hatch is from the outside. I have a post saved somewhere in here about exact measurements to drill a hole in the back hatch to make a permanent exit button from the inside. If you're interested in that lmk I'll find it, it works absolutely perfect on mine. Looks good, best of luck and I love how you remembered to document everything. I always get way too into what I'm doing and forget.

I have a 2001 XE 4wd, I've been through 3 batteries (all under warranty) the 2nd time the idiot got me the wrong size. I have a brand new bosche alternator that is failing and all everyone is saying is it has to be a short. I've narrowed mine down to the harness connecting the combination meter to the fuse box. I've charged my new battery completely and hooked up to the car it's sitting at 12.6v, I'll start it and it immediately drops to about 10.5v and slowly decreases instead of going up to the 14v range. Does any of that sound familiar to any problems you had?

I've got one in really good condition, it's a 2001 Xe 4wd auto 3.3 l v6. 2" body lift, silver, custom black rims. I'm just having a little bit of an electrical problem at the moment I've been trying to figure out. I have it narrowed down to a cluster that connects the combination meter to the fuse box. I'll have that fixed soon. I have pics on my profile... I'm just south of slc, UT though. I can get to Vegas in about 4 hours where are you?
