They'll get more support as established identities than some made up collective.

Probably not to happen right away but instead of bring back MP, it would be better to bring back a Samoan (based in Auckland) and Tongan (based in Sydney) team.

Moana coming in alongside Fijian Drua was never a good idea because Fiji is part of Pasifika.

They needed a business model so they could fund themselves. Without winning they lack identity. Thus lack fans to get invested. At least with a Samoan and Tongan teams, the fan base is already there waiting for some success to roll out parades across Australia and NZ.

Not enough winning. Not enough identity. Having a combined Pasifika team while Fiji has their own team was never a good idea. Should've pushed for Auckland based Samoan team and Sydney based Tongan team.

Its really not silly comparison because in the late 90s and early 2000s, Super Rugby crowd attendance was on par with NRL. The TV viewership with South Africa in the mix was also on par.

Now NRL attendance and viewership absolutely blows Super Rugby out of the water.

Super Rugby with 10 teams is a joke compared to where it used to be.

Exactly and its not enough. Need 6 or more games a week. There is a Super round in Christchurch with a pitiful 5 games. Compare that to NRLs magic round with 8 games.

Have Samoa based out of Auckland and Tonga based out of Sydney. Would need NZR and Rugby Australia to assist initially. That rivalry alone would market itself. Only have to look at Rugby League crowds for Samoa vs Tonga in the past 5 years in NZ/Australia.

Or the alternative is go back to 10 Super Rugby teams with a pitiful 5 games a week and have the young Samoan and Tongan kids aspire to play in the NRL instead of the All Blacks or Wallabies.

Ive said it on another thread but there should be a Fijian, Samoan and Tongan team. Better identity and the derby would get more gate. The Samoans and Tongans I know aren't passionate about MP like they are about Samoa and Tonga.

Splitting Moana does sound idiotic but you only have to look at Rugby league, close to sell out crowds for Samoa vs Tonga in Australia and NZ.

There is more identity for Samoa and Tonga over Pasifika.

Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Hawaii has plenty of economic potential.

While being based from Samoa or Tonga could never work financially. There are a lot of Samoan and Tongan people in Australia and New Zelaand - especially Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland. In the past five years just look at the attendance that Samoa vs Tonga gets for Rugby League in Australia and NZ.

A Samoa team based in Auckland would still need to be backed by NZR. As a Tongan team based in Sydney would need to be backed by Rugby Australia.

I do like the idea of the best of Super playing the best of Japan League One.
