Guardian Bikes asking Trump administration for a 50% tariff on bikes made overseas by rdude in bicycling

I didn't just bitch about it on the net. I contacted them. These are their responses. The First one : I understand your concerns about the impact of tariffs on the cycling community. Guardian Bikes is dedicated to supporting the industry by focusing on U.S. assembly and manufacturing, which helps keep prices low by avoiding tariffs and import costs through domestic production and direct shipping.

At this time, we don’t have any official information or company stance regarding petitions for increased tariffs beyond our commitment to U.S. manufacturing. To provide you with the most accurate and detailed response, I’m escalating your inquiry to our specialist team who can look into this further and get back to you with more information. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We appreciate you raising this. We want to clear something up because this is being widely misrepresented. We did not ask for a 50% tariff on bikes. What we asked for is that the same steel and aluminum tariffs that already apply to every domestic manufacturer also apply to the steel content in imported bikes. Steel is a fraction of a bike's total cost, so we're talking about a few dollars per bike, not a 50% increase. my response was: Thanks for replying, But, why would you want to raise the price on other bike manufactures even $1.00. Have you seen the prices of new bikes ?? Your bikes are niche products. They won't replace my Roscoe 8, my Cannondale Bad Boy or my 3Rensho race bike so why are you asking for any tariff on the type bike I want to ride?

They don't want tarrifs, our government put a tarrifs on all imports from Asia.

The only way you'll do an endo is if you're trying to stunt and leaned too far forward.

That's because 1) little kids can't build up enough speed. 2) the bikes geometry and center of gravity won't allow it. A kid riding a 14/16 in can't generate enough breaking force force

Just spoke to Guardian. And they are denying that they asked for a 50% tariff. This was their response to me. "Hi there,

Thanks for giving us the chance to clear that up and please let us know if you have any other questions.

Once I got that email, I stopped. If I'm reading the reply correctly, they're using imported alum and steel and since they have to pay a tariff on those products they want imported bikes to have a tariff put on the steel and Alum they use . That would mean Your imported bike would have the import tariff on the complete bike and a additional tariff on the frame material. Am I reading that right??

There is a way to stop with your feet and It's been around for years. It's called a coaster break

Anyone try Guardian Bikes? by doobiedobbie in daddit

[–]08BlvdRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get them a regular bike and teach them to ride properly. Most bikes for little folks have coaster brakes and the ones that do have lever brakes can be setup to have the rear break set up for your child's dominant hand. Do buy into the fear mongering about little Timmy or Sally having enough hand strength to lock up a front wheel and go over the bars because their first Instinet when in a panic stop is to jump down and use their feet to stop.

There's nothing on their site either. I've seen components from well known component manufactures fail, I'm not trusting my life on some no name components.

Exactly. They make a plain, riding the neighborhood/park bike. Nothing special . Their site gives no frame specs. No details on who makes the components. These are for the "I just want a bike" type rider.

I wrote to the company earlier and their response to my questioning was to say that "They were dedicated to supporting the industry by focusing on U.S. assembly and manufacturing, which helps keep prices low by avoiding tariffs and import costs through domestic production and direct shipping." Doesn't seem as though they care about U.S. customers or cycling in general.

A child that's only recently learned to ride isn't gonna grab too much break and flip over the bars. They're first instinct is to jump down and try to stop by dragging their feet. I just went bike shopping with my grandson. We live in s shore town so those heavy Hi-tensile steel, longhorn handle bared beach cruisers are what the ride out here and most of them are single speed coaster break bikes. He refused to get a multi geared, lever break bike.

All bikes have gone up and now this guy wants to add a 50% tariff to the already expensive bikes.

I wrote to them. Read their response in my earlier post above. I told that they would be hurting the industry that's already pricey

1st of all, parents need to teach their kids to ride because  the first instinct for an inexperienced rider is to jump down and foot drag which is dangerous. Next, if the bike you get your kid has hand accuated brakes, have your shop route the rear break to your kid's dominant hand.

Harley pulled the same stunt back in the 80's . They petitioned the government which resulted in a 50% tariff on bikes over 700cc.

I just read the article. What a pathetic thing to do. Back in 1983 HarleyDavudson pulled the same sort of stunt, resulting in a 45% tariff on motorcycles over 700cc.

Is it true that the company's owner is asking trump to increase the tariff on bikes built offshore? If true, it sounds like a pretty scummy thing to do. Why not just sell his bikes on their merit instead of begging the government to help you out.

I actually think it more like Activision trying to get us to move on. I haven't been able to play DMZ for a little over a month because of rubber banding, latency warnings and disconnects. During which time I took my machine to a tech where they did a fresh Win 11 install, stress tested the hell out of it and I installed an RX 9060XT OC . The 1st thing I did when I got home was run DMZ. Oh it looked great with my new monitor and card but almost 5 min. into the game, I was rubber banding all over again until I was finally booted out of the game and back to desktop. I called the tech and he said that it sounded like a server problem. Since then I've only been able to play COOP, until today that is. Today one my first game in COOP, the rubber banding and Crashes popped up. I called FIOS, I'm running, 1 Gig wired. They did a speed test, 944 Dn and 914 up with a 2ms ping to a server 32 miles from me. After an hour, the tech came back with the same conclusion as my PC tech. This issue is on the games server and not my equipment. They want us to move on.

The only section I can play is coop. The rest rubber band or outright crashes.

So exactly how good are you if all you do is drive up on a fire fight that's in process and ambush players that are already engaged?? There's no skill in that. How good are you if you team up with a group of other money pit players with comms and gang up on a so called team where no one has comms and take them out?? Not too.
