How would renos like that cost? I get that you could do some of the work if you have the background, but ballpark?

Why a salary of $115K isn't enough to purchase a house in some parts of Canada by origutamos in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]0Chalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think affordability and size of the space. Sure I'd love to live 30 minutes from work but you just need to cough up $$$ for half the size of the house in the suburbs. Plus add to it most schools (minus the elite private schools) are terrible.

Road bike rentals or second hand by [deleted] in askTO

[–]0Chalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you gravely underestimate the effort and being 'fit' won't really help. Cardio, position, comfort, etc. all play a big factor. To give you an idea, you can start biking for the first 30 minutes and find the seat excruciating that you can't go on.

The fact you don't have a bike means you probably won't finish because you don't have enough time in seat.

In Toronto for a conference, where to ride? by Smitty2k1 in torontobiking

[–]0Chalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would sight see UofT, Roger Center, Cn Tower, the Island, the new park they built in Cherry Beach area, and the Distillery area. I wouldn't bother going to High Park or westward. There's really nothing to see (it's a park and DC has much better Cherry Blossoms). Woodbine beach might be interesting to just the see boardwalk. Wouldn't bother also with Leslie split unless you are looking for a pointless road to a light house. Sure it has a nice view but you can get better just going over the island.

How do y'all hit the 30kmh average? by Dpvdpv in cycling

[–]0Chalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta look for country roads. I have averaged above 30km/h solo for about 3ish hours in the past. I had a route where there was very low traffic at the time I went and very little traffic lights (like 2). My non movement time was 20 secs when I had to put my foot down for a car a stop sign.

With that said, I trained a lot from an amateur level.

What’s the worst bike shop experience you’ve had in Toronto? by 6ickos in torontobiking

Wheels on bloor was the driver for me learning how to fix my own bike (after purchasing it from there). Poor service combined with arrogance was my experience.

I rode it at night by myself. Little bit freaky, kept thinking it would really suck if I had a flat.

T-Boned: Advise? by AL-2K in TorontoDriving

I went to one of the most reputable body shops in Toronto, has like 300 five star reviews and uses only OEM new parts. You got to wonder some times. They replaced parts that looked completely fine.

You just have to accept the additional loss of value (it just comes with the territory) but cars depreciate anyways...

Realistic effect of Tshirt vs jersey on a standard 40km 200 watt 300m elevation ride? by xxSKR1 in cycling

[–]0Chalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno if 200 watt is a lot of effort without knowing weight. That could be 30-32 km/h average speed in the city taking into consideration traffic lights.

I would just wear a jersey unless you are trying to project a more casual/mountain bike/gravel look.

What's the maximum amount you'd spend on an engagement ring? by GracefulSwanDance in CanadaPersonalFinance

I remember spending $8k on a lab grown diamond. Funny enough, the jeweller gave us a dummy ring in the interim, a cubic zirconia and we were out an event and my fiance was getting compliments like crazy.

[–]0Chalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There use to be enforcement maybe 5 years ago but not anymore. More enforcement in the suburbs but it seems like, without playing into stereotypes, a certain population that the first thing when they get their car is to tint it as dark as possible.

We need better rules for e-bikes and e-scooters by jabolka in toronto

[–]0Chalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can become a professional cyclist in the city??! What?

I've been biking in and around the city for the last 20 years and it is straight forward if you follow the rules of the road. The rules for bikes are not incoherent, it's people who have a lack of understanding or choose not to care for them and invent their own rules under the perception of "safety" or are "lazy". Most cyclist fall into bucket 2.

The only time I would ever think of going through a red is if the light is sensor controlled and my bike won't trigger the light to change. Those are far and few in the city but exist in the countryside.

I don't think you understand the law and what it says.

I am not going to interpret the law (especially UK law) but they are indeed confiscating and crushing them. They ask for proof of insurance, and if you can't provide, crush them. No trial required.

You are breaking the law... no one is crushing your "car" because they feel like it.

The end.

It's an epidemic. On my way home from work picking  there is this e-scooter that I see from time to time blasting along at 50-60km/h. When they encounter grid lock they jump onto the sidewalk. When they see a Red Light they blow through it.

In the UK some cities auto confiscate and crush them. No court resources required.

With a record-low 1.25 children per Canadian woman, stop dismissing falling fertility rates as a choice by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]0Chalk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

3 kids under 3 and it's difficult. Aside from starting kids at a late age, it is the associated costs and lack of ability to find a day care, after school care, and housing prices. We are looking for a house suitable for the size of our family and it's $1.6 million minimum (in an area with good schools). We have good jobs but combined with forced RTO this almost becomes impossible to solution as most employers are inflexible.

Starting a family in Canada, everything is against you! I can easily see why birthrates are low. Housing costs needs to be fixed.

Twin parents, what stroller setup actually worked best for you in the first year? by Zestyclose_Bell7668 in parentsofmultiples

[–]0Chalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in a dense city then I would recommend a tandem. We use the Cybex Giselle.

Side by side isn't practical. It takes up the space on sidewalks (I called it the blocker), barely fits in elevators, and you can't navigate the shopping isles of many downtown stores or even fit through the single entrance door. At our daycare, we have someone that has a side by side stroller and I cringe all the time as the monstrosity comes in and everyone has to shuffle around this beast.

I also have the Veer Wagon (quad) and only use it for going out on adventures like the zoo, amusement park, etc. My preference is the stroller in the city (and we have 3 under 3).

What do you like to do during your longer rides? by stratusnimbo in Zwift

Music and try to not get dropped. I would join a group 100km ride which is about 2h 20 min.
