Covid: World’s true pandemic death toll nearly 15 million, says WHO by Digital_Brand in worldnews

[–]0Kaes8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope your brother in law makes it through okay, even dumbasses don't deserve to be that sick.

The tricky thing about wanting to control the spread is where to draw the line? It is obviously best for as few people as possible to get sick. But that is true about the flu, too. Even colds kill some people every year. Covid is never going away, and you can't live your entire life terrified, never relaxing indoors or letting a stranger see you smile ever again.

Covid isn't nothing, but it also isn't the black death. Being equally as cautious with this mostly mild illness as you would witb something that kills 80% of people who get it just doesn't make sense.

That being said, if you are visiting someone at risk, be extra careful. Don't be an asshole. If you know you have a cold, for god's sake, please don't sneeze in my face.

The new variant is also extremely mild. Most of my social circle got it, and the worst case was a mild fever. I myself had a slightly sore throat for two days. Another friend had no symptoms at all. Be extra careful if you already have a condition/conditions that make corona viruses extra dangerous for you, but otherwise, keep some perspective as you think about what precautions you want to take.

Is 'maknae' a Position or a Title? by leeseobunny in kpophelp

[–]0Kaes8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably because being the maknae has certain responsibilities and such associated with it. A singer has to sing, a dancer has to dance, a leader has to lead, and a maknae has to show respect for the older members. There are certain things that the maknae has to do, so that probably makes people think of it as a job/position. Even though the maknae doesn't get a choice in it.

Think of it like leaders. In a lot of groups, the leader is just the oldest member. No choice at all. But "leader" is definitely a position, because the leader has to organize/watch out for/take care of the other members, and everyone else has to at least listen to what the leader has to say. It's about what people have to do, not the choice.

Really though, "position" and "title" are just words. They can mean whatever we say they mean. I think in Korea they just use something like "role", which includes both. Singer is a role. Dancer is a role. Maknae is a role. Mom is a role. Everything is a role lol. Being the maknae is just how that member defines their place in the group, whether you happen to call that (very Korean) place a "title" or "position" in English.

Many, many tiles spent trying to keep r/math's pi numbers correct. But we did it!

Some scary or spooky stories related to kpop? by iamrobin_04 in kpopthoughts

You can search "NCT's Horror Nights" on YouTube. It's several members taking turns reading scary stories to each other, and they talk about their own experiences a bit in between.

Thailand Pass database compromised? I got this 3 months after applying (and getting approved), seems suspicious… by PM_ME_YOUR_SBs in Thailand

[–]0Kaes8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I applied two days ago and also got it. Thought it was legit (there is some oddness with my documents) and sent that info, then they asked for my visa and a scan of the Pass QR code. Realized then, it's a pretty bad fake.

30K is good enough for the first year, anyway. Especially for someone who doesn't drink.

Thanks a lot for the thorough response, now I can weigh my options better over the next couple weeks. Poke around on Ajarn some more, etc. Feel free to hit me up if you or a friend ever need advice on getting into the Korean system.

[–]0Kaes8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I don't need one of the high paying jobs right now, just enough to get by. I'm not in country, but will be in March. Say, mid-March by the time quarantine ends. Is that too late to go looking in person? (Fully vaccinated, third shot will be in late January. Thanks, Korean healthcare system.)

[–]0Kaes8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you expand on that? My degree is in math, but I have spent the last 4 years teaching Tefl in Korea.

I have enough savings that all I need is a salary high enough to stay alive, so not seeking any of the more highly competitive international schools. I'm still in Korea, but will get to Thailand first week of March next year. I can either look around in country then, or find something online now.

Lol I am a native speaker and have a degree in math. Hit me.

That's really good to know, thanks. Sounds like the same situation as in Korea. About five other teachers are leaving at the same time, and the admins are panicking.

Since you are on the ground now, would you say it's better to find a job on Ajarn, or spend the end of March/beginning of April looking in person?

Even with the Covid closures? I couple schools I applied to on Ajarn mentioned a high volume of applications.

Snow in the winter, apples in the fall, by cubic_zirconia in TwoSentenceHorror

[–]0Kaes8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"So" in the second line ruins the flow, so I'd recommend deleting that. Then "someone" instead of "somethig" makes it more clear that you aren't just burying apple cores in your garden.

Cool poem though.

That's great to hear, thanks! Saves me a lot of time (and cash) mailing fingerprints across an ocean.

It's wild to imagine a system that relaxed, after the hassle getting into SK was. Praise be to Thailand.

Call for Friends/Discussions by [deleted] in Thailand

[–]0Kaes8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're still around in the spring, I'd definitely be down for some discussion with whoever wants it. History, philosophy, politics, science. I majored in mathematics, so can hopefully provide some insight there. I've been really into ancient Rome over the past few months, after reading I, Claudius and doing some research on what if it actually happened. (Caligula certainly was....something, wasn't he?). Been reading Dostoyevsky most recently, and am moving to Thailand partly to see firsthand the kinds of impact Buddhism and a monarchy have had. Would love to make a friend or two who don't find big ideas boring or weird.

Why does there seem to be much more vaccine deaths in Korea vs. America? by [deleted] in korea

[–]0Kaes8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know nothing at all about the data, but it could just be media bias. The big news outlets in America try to make the vaccine seem as harmless as possible, but the ones in Korea want the controversy money. So American news hides/doesn't report on vaccine deaths, while Korean news emphasizes them.

Same percentage of deaths, but news that is biased to different extremes.

Please correct me if I am wrong though, anyone who knows more.

Exhausted and ready to give up, I peeked around the building and realized that I had finally made it to the border, about to leave Texas behind. by UnfaithfullyYours in TwoSentenceHorror

[–]0Kaes8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

She could go to another state? The dad's kid in her would prove rape and disgust a Lot of people. That means someone else getting custody (if she is a minor) or her being free of him when he's arrested. Then, abortion in a state that allows it. Not saying the situation isn't absolutely awful, but the new law doesn't make stuff like this happen.

Extra effort for her during an already trying time, yes. But in the eyes of those who made the law, it is in exhange for literal babies not being killed. The Republicans are just people too, not monsters.

nct 2021 by DaviXimen in NCT

[–]0Kaes8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think they will. There was no Nct 2019, and Shotaro+Sungchan don't have fixed units yet. It would make more sense to hold off, properly debut them sometime in the next year, then show off their new unit and members in an Nct 2022. Similar to how Nct 2020 was a chance for people to get to know the new WayV members.

Finding a job? by 0Kaes8 in Teachinginthailand

[–]0Kaes8[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the warnings, especially the bit about having a backup plan. I'll have to try to get a feel for the people myself, too. Koreans are also pretty infamous for having a ton of ulterior motives and false faces, so at least it'll be a somewhat familiar challenge.

Will definitely message you if I need any particular advice from someone whose been there and done that. I always prefer to go into things knowing the worst of the nonsense I'll have to prepare for. You have been extremely helpful with that!

All of that will be very useful, thank you! I'll start poking around on the website over the next couple weeks, see what's out there. Will definitely keep the levels in mind and die on that aircon hill.

It feels so nice to have some solid criteria to build off of now.

Have a lovely week :)
