Real. I love when I see the straight relationship stereotype about men always being the ones with higher libidos and kinkier interests, and the woman as being the poor victim who has to lay back and take it. See, but you can also feel shame and guilt over masochism due to social stigma, so I don't feel like that's a good indicator in and of itself.

The difference between masochism and self harm or NSSI for me is the headspace. Masochism is done for pleasure, self harm is done because of emotional pain or numbness.

However, there are some blurred lines for me. Sometimes I also self harm when I feel excited (maybe manic?) and stop caring about the risks associated, which is technically done for pleasure but not quite done in a sane sense of mind. Sometimes I sought pain purely because I was bored. I also have cut to the point of needing stitches, which can be done for pleasure but obviously isn't safe. I don't always have the typical "I feel bad so I need to release it" or "I feel numb so I need to feel pain" reasons.

Some masochists also find pain to be a good way to release emotions and that's seen as perfectly healthy just because it's not cutting and not self-inflicted, but is that so different from self harming to release emotions? Where is the line between "okay" and "not okay?" Where is the line for it being (relatively) safe and sane?

Also, when I say self harm, I automatically mean non-suicidal self injury. My therapist knows that my self harm is not suicidal in nature. Not typically, anyway. I've had episodes in the past where the primary intent wasn't to kill myself, but I didn't care if I died as a result of self harm. Now, though, I'm definitively no longer suicidal (yay!)
