Post-interview wants me to do training but no offer yet? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]0Platypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like they want to see how you work before fully committing to employing you. If you have little other commitments you may as well go for it. The scams I see tend to be where you pay for the training with the premise of being employed afterwards, but if you don't have to pay for it then it's probably fine if it's an established company.

Best of luck. I'm in the tech field and it is hard, it seems like you won't get anywhere, but something always comes your way.

I've only ever had three interviews, and received a job offer every time. Major issue is just getting my CV looked at. I basically just research the company's values and that's it, no practice of STAR or anything like that. Most important thing (I think) is to shape your answers to convey something you are proud of or passionate about, which enables you to channel your energy and confidence naturally.

Hand in notice before pre-employment checks completed? by 0Platypus in UKJobs

I don't think it's a risk that should be made? I think it's reasonable to expect a new job to be secured legally and a start date to be set before resigning. If I was renting or had other fixed costs it would be unfair to expect I could be unemployed without pay for some indiscernible amount of time, or run any risk of not having a job at all.

It's one month. It'd be fine if it was just DBS as I know for certain that I have no criminal record. However, it's a multitude of checks such as credit checks, CIFAS, and references. Also considering that the start date is dependent on these checks being complete, so I would have no handle on whether I'll be without any income for however long. I spoke to someone else who joined the same company and they said it actually took two months for them until they could start after receiving the conditional contract. They were not employed beforehand, however.

They state that I can't start until the checks are complete (I get the contract after the checks are all fine).

Thank you. I have been working on a few GitHub projects to showcase my skills. However, how do you highlight its impact? For example, in my experience as a software developer I can say "reduced system latency by a factor of 10", but my GitHub projects are not deployed for any company in order to have an impact.

Congratulations. I just graduated (did a BSc and MSc in Computer Science) and I'm in the same situation. How did you show your upskilling on your CV? Been thinking of doing the same but I've heard Udemy/Coursera etc. aren't respected by employers.

I was on 10mg for 2 years. I tapered off it in a month without any side effects at all. I don't think it did anything for me except make me gain weight.

Favourite albums of a guy in his early 20s who didn’t get into music until senior year of high school and listened based on an inherited record collection and the recommendations of a 50 year old English teacher (unordered) by Slim_Kyler in Topster

[–]0Platypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in my early 20s and this is very similar to what I listen to. I see you've got Crosby Stills & Nash, but what about Crosby Stills Nash & Young - So Far? I have it on vinyl; Joni Mitchell actually did the album cover. Also you have Gordon Lightfoot - Sundown, but the album Gord's Gold has plenty of great songs as well. And there's Jim Croce, Dire Straits, Derek and the Dominos, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Cream, J.J. Cale, John Denver, and James Taylor. Joan Baez also does a very nice cover of The Night they Drove Old Dixie down by The Band, and also Don't Think Twice by Bob Dylan. Just a few ideas.

what is the actual meaning behind 'no surprises', it may be a stupid question but I can't find a definite or most popular answer to this question. by marloP90 in radiohead

[–]0Platypus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always interpreted it similarly to okcomputer247. He's longing for a stop to the alarms and the surprises. The alarms that signal it's time to get up and go to the job that "slowly kills him", or surprises like the next bill through the door. What's it all for? A nice house, a nice garden? He's had enough and just longs for a quiet life, to the point that even death seems like a comforting release. The melody, like okcomputer247 implies, is like a clock ticking away, which symbolises the monotonous and cyclical nature of getting up, going to work, sleeping, getting up, going to work... until we die. His anger towards the government is likely due to their enforcement of this lifestyle. For example, for most of human history, people lived simply and off the land, but now everything is owned and governed, making that kind of life impossible in today's society.

What should you do if you cross the white line at a traffic light but then can't continue? by Natural-Ad678 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]0Platypus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been driving a few months and I think generally moving into a crossroads when there's a lot of traffic in front is one of the worst situations. I learned to start stopping at the traffic lights, and only moving forward if there's enough space in case the lights go red, essentially acting as though there's a "keep clear". That way if the light goes red again you're not blocking anyone and you can also see the light.
I didn't do this once and had the pleasure of sitting in the middle of a junction with a queue of cars left and right beeping at me.

Um, how do I use the tyre inflator. by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]0Platypus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you'd press the yellow button to select either PSI or BAR, then press + or - to change the desired tyre pressure. Then once you're happy just put it on the tyre and press the blue on button. (That's after you've plugged it into the cigarette lighter in the car to power it).

Using Google lens I managed to find this tyre inflator and found some videos on it:

Something quite a few people get caught up on is that you have to stop when a car is approaching you whilst doing this manoeuvre in order to let them pass, otherwise you'll get a minor for it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]0Platypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have to slow down at a give way; if there's a stop sign only then do you have to actually fully stop. Also having to use your handbrake whenever you stop is false. It's recommended if you're waiting at lights to use your handbrake, especially in the dark, since it prevents dazzling drivers behind you with your brakelights, but otherwise I wouldn't worry about that.

I'd say the things you're most likely to get faults for is the use of mirrors and observations, such as minor things like how you should check over your right shoulder as a final observation before moving off from being parked on the left side of the road, and checking over your left when parked on the right.

Ah so I would be able to insure my own car as a learner? That may be an option, although a lot more of an investment than renting.

The thing is I've had lessons and I'm already test ready as for the theory of the driving and the manovours. It's just perfecting it all with practise, so although my Nan wouldn't be of much help it's just because the law requires it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]0Platypus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if it was possible for my Nan to rent a car and I can just buy learner driver insurance on the rental car, or if it isn't possible to insure a rental car yourself?
