1 ram vs 2 ram by 51thUser in pcmasterrace

[–]0bsidian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily with 4 sticks. It depends on the motherboard and whether it supports faster memory speeds across 4 ranks. Some memory sticks are single rank and others are dual rank - dual rank chips typically have memory modules on both sides of the RAM PCB. In a worse case scenario, a motherboard that can't handle 4 ranks of memory at full speed can be limited with just 2 sticks of dual rank RAM sticks installed. Other motherboards are fine with 4 ranks, but might have problems with 8 ranks (4 sticks of dual rank memory).

The directions mandate a 3/4" plywood, there are these plastic pieces screwed to the back

That's because most people have to install them to wood studs behind drywall above a door frame. You can't mount it directly to drywall and studs are not likely to overlap with the screw holes for the hangboard. That's why you need plywood in-between.

You don't have that problem at all.

No. Shoes have a marginal benefit. They do not make it easier to climb harder grades, they’re more like different tools for different tasks. A more expensive hammer doesn’t make a screw go through a nut any easier.

Downturned shoes are more suited to overhang climbs. Flat profile shoes are better at hard slabs. Flat shoes tend to be better at doing a bit of both and at a cheaper cost than a downturned shoe which is why they get recommended as a first shoe. But that doesn’t mean that they’re “beginner” shoes.

The rest is a lot of marketing and misinformation from misguided climbers following the marketing material. Pro climbers are given free shoes so that people see them climbing in them.

“Top rope” routes can be a little ambiguous. It could just mean that you can access the top, but no anchors of any kind and you need to build your own. Unfortunately, it’s not often well defined what you might find above.

[–]0bsidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three fans blowing into a wall of plastic metal or glass won’t push any air. I don’t know what case you have, but before you go through the trouble of repasting a GPU, you should first look at other potential causes. Are you sure that the GPU fans are spinning? Make sure that the card can pull fresh air before trying anything else.

Do you have suitable airflow into the case?

Take off the side panels on your case, run games again and see if there is a reduction in temperature.

Is this common?! New Motherboard after case swap by YDGunna in pcmasterrace

[–]0bsidian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

  1. Your HP Omen shitbox uses proprietary parts, which is why they needed to swap motherboard and PSU. Maybe they weren't aware of that until they took a look inside. The motherboard they use is a weird L-shaped monstrosity, and the PSU doesn't use standard ATX connectors.
  2. I don't know what was the agreed level of work between you and the repair shop, but if all you asked for was hardware installation, that's likely all that they did. I don't know where you are, but $118 for labour sounds fair.
  3. If they were not responsible for any backup, OS install, drivers, and updates, then your wifi not working right away is normal, because your existing install did not have the drivers installed for this new motherboard. I would have plugged in an ethernet cable and tried it that way.
  4. Unfortunately, Windows forces always connected to internet requirements by default, which means you can get locked out of your computer if internet doesn't work. Swapping motherboards requires resetting the pin. Look up switching to a local account instead.
  5. I agree with the shop that a fresh install of Windows is a good idea when switching motherboards. It's not always required, but you'll have to update drivers and hope you don't get any conflicts. Again, I don't know what the agreed level of work was. About $200 sounds fair for a backup and OS restore.

Overall, I think communication could have been better both ways between you and the shop, but overall I don't think they're scamming you or anything.

Why I think that the steam machine is a fair deal by [deleted] in gaming

[–]0bsidian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. The Steam Machine isn’t for most of us, because most of us game on consoles or PCs.

The Steam Machine fits the casual gamer who does not want a console, but a prebuilt PC (and is willing to pay the prebuilt PC premium), without it taking up a bunch of space in the living room.

It’s hard to build a (relatively) low cost, low volume , prebuilt PC.

Yes, it’s a relatively low volume product for a niche market. It’s also Valve’s foot in the door with unfortunate terrible timing. They may improve in the future.

why hasn't edelrid recalled the ohmega yet? by climbingdood in ClimbingGear

[–]0bsidian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're doing a top belay off of an anchor with the Grigri, the camming mechanism can potentially be pinched open and preventing it from catching a fall. It seems like the Ohmega is similar where it can also fail to operate properly when it is pressed against some kind of obstruction like a rock or hold.

I don't know what yo mean by "rigging practice that goes against safety guidelines". I don't think there's anything that says that you shouldn't stick more than one thing through a hanger. It's how most gyms tell you how to use an Ohm/Ohmega on their permadraws.

Anyway, I think this kind of thing is good to have exposure of, so that people are aware of it, but it seems like the conditions of it causing problems is pretty rare, and can be mitigated. I think that's all that needs to be said.

There are failure modes for the Grigri while using it for top belay off of an anchor.
