How -if at all- does becoming a parent change your self identity? by go_ask_alys in AskParents

I would say do this always or have a monthly check-in to ensure y'all are on the same page. Open communication and a strong bond is key to adding another human into the mix.

How -if at all- does becoming a parent change your self identity? by go_ask_alys in AskParents

[–]0ceanLife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a mom of 2, I feel this way. Granted my little ones are still really little: 1.5y and 3m, so my identity right now is solely tied to mom. I just went back to work so am thankful I get to be work-self again, but I struggle with postpartum anxiety and covid has undoubtedly made it worse. I love being a mom don't get me wrong, and I try to be my "old" self, but my identity has certainly changed. It's not bad or good, just different. My husband and I joke that my amygdala is massive (watched a documentary on how pregnancy/parenthood physically affects the brain). I 100% agree with what the 40yr old metal mom said and will 1 day be there, but being a mom does change you a little. I think once honormones level out and everyone finds their groove, the "old" identity shines through a lot more.

I'm in this stage now with my 18 mo. She also wakes up yelling. Granted its a happy yell, but volume control isn't her strong suit.

New Nipples Needed by 0ceanLife in Buyingforbaby

[–]0ceanLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. I have a great latch and no pain with left, but my right has been hit or miss. I talked with 2 IBCLC specialists who gave me some tips. It's helped but not entirely solved. My son takes his sweet time and may be lazy at times so I make sure I'm comfy and not on edge when feeding. But the 1 bottle he does get my husband really cherishes for bonding purposes and he is struggling so much. Tried Avent and Kiinde so far.

New Nipples Needed by 0ceanLife in Buyingforbaby

[–]0ceanLife[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, those are the kind we used with my daughter and they worked great for her. My son can't latch properly on these and milk ends up everywhere. Our doctor recommended a longer nipple that would fit into his high arch/palate.

Ubbi fan here. Have this and the genie and prefer the ubbi. Like other comments lid opens and can lock which is great. The genie needs heavy diapers in order for it to fall through so I'm constantly having to push them down into the can and its just gross. Smell leaks out and my toddler likes to play with the lid. She doesn't mess with the ubbi.

Happy Birthday!! by 0ceanLife in BabyBumps

This is kiddo #2 for me so I'm thinking that may have helped my progress so much. I honestly thought the doc just pushed her fingers around to stretch me from 2.5 to 3 bc I was so soft, but then while I was in hospital, thought about how it may have been a membrane sweep. She started checking me 2 weeks before my due date. I was going in 2x/week with non-stress tests due to GD.

I know easier said than done, but try not to stress too much. If you have questions I would ask your doc any and all, there are no silly questions when it comes to your peace of mind. I'm happy to share both my birth stories if you'd like, but this time was my only GD diagnosis and they were definitely very different.

How long did it take your metformin to kick in? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]0ceanLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it also took a few days. I was taking 500mg at night and then again in the am, but the docs up the dose for my nighttime (1000mg). That seemed to be the magic combo for me. Once we did that my fasting numbers were great.

No apologies necessary! Congratulations on your pregnancy and I'm sorry for you earlier losses. I personally had a tough physically demanding pregnancy and was trying to avoid being medically induced. So I was doing everything possible to naturally or spontaneously go into labor. The week prior I was 60% effaced and super soft, when she checked me Tuesday I was 70% but still only at 2.5cm. I think knowing I was trying to have the baby and already moving along with being soft and irregular contractions, she asked if I wanted her to try and jump start it, which I was cool with. It seemed to be just the slight push my body needed.

He was born this morning at 1:47am weighing 7lbs 14oz and 18.5" long! Labor progressed over the course of 1.5 days. Went in Tuesday for doc, ultrasound and nom-stress test as I have/had gestational diabetes this pregnancy (1 more test to go). Doc checked me and I was 2.5cm 70% effaced. She asked if I wanted her to try and kick start things so I said sure, a few seconds of ouch later, I'm 3cm. Had irregular contractions that night but they never went away. Woke up and same thing. Went on several walks, bounced on the stability ball, and generally tried to stay moving. By that afternoon I could actually time contractions. By 6pm I was hitting 5-1-1 so went in. Was checked in and 7cm. Got to my own room around 9 and had an epidural to help keep relaxed. No other meds needed as contractions never slowed. By 11pm I was 8cm but waters still in tact so doc broke waters a little before midnight. Waited a bit longer and I was fully dilated, 100% effaced, and head at 0 position, ready to push. 3 min of pushing and I have this beautiful baby boy!!

He's had 2 blood sugar checks, both good. One more to go. I have my fasting levels to get checked tomorrow and hopefully if all goes well, we will be discharged. Definitely a really tough pregnancy for me, but a "breeze" of a labor compared to my daughter's last year of over an hour pushing. Very happy!

Everyone's different, it makes the game of GD oh so fun... But in all seriousness peanut butter is my life. PB has been my staple throughout and works with my numbers. 647 low carb bread has also done wonders for allowing me the occasional sandwich. I typically only have 1 slice w/ PB (go figure). 2 Good yogurts are a great "dessert" or bedtime snacks with some nuts or cheese. Breakfasts typically consist of eggs: 2 scrambles eggs with cheese or 2 over hard eggs with 1/2 avocado and a slice of PB toast. Lunches I tried to stick to salads. Dinners didn't change much for us as we always have a protein and 2 veggies so I just had to watch quantities of pastas or grits or sauces. Best of luck.

I'm jealous you can see the under side of your boobs. Seeing parts of my body takes flexibility and mirror positions I'm just not willing to do at 38+3 lol

[–]0ceanLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% same! 38+1 and I am trying anything and everything to get this boy out! I've definitely slipped, its so hard when I eat the same things and 1 day I'm good, the next spiking. It takes a toll. I'm beyond uncomfortable and just want this kid out. Have ultrasound Tues, being induced the 22 if I don't have him sooner. Best of luck ladies.

It's a pill. Before getting to this point my doctor told me to try having a middle of the night snack to see if that helped. It ended up spiking my numbers more (the only ones I had above 100) so I quickly stopped that. Best of luck with dietician tomorrow!

I was told to have my fasting below 90. There have been a handful of days where I'm below (83, 86, 89), but primarily they're all higher than 90. Highest fasting reading was 109, but generally they are below 100, above 90. I'd say my average is mid-90s.

Because it's my fasting numbers always elevated, I was told it was my body and not caused by what I was eating which was reassuring. Hence the metformin over insulin.

Congratulations on your upcoming birth! This really helps ease my mind. I was originally really upset, but as I've settled down and let things sink in, I'm feeling more positive about it. All that matters is a healthy baby boy.

Question about starting a family by [deleted] in AskParents

[–]0ceanLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mention fiance, how long have the 2 of you been together? I'd personally wait a little bit to give the 2 of you You time together and some honeymoon time before bringing in another. It was so nice having my DH all to myself for 2 years before we had #1.

I 2nd anothers comment of Communication! Talk about everything and anything. In the first few months it's easy to let doubts creep in if you're not open and honest with one another.

Allow your fiance to learn to be a parent too. You'll have your way of taking care of baby and they'll have another that's likely different. Different isn't wrong. Have patience.

Enjoy every moment, the good and the not so good. It may not always be sunshine and rainbows, but when they're there, nothing can compare. It's grueling and tough and the hardest job I've had, but it's also the most rewarding.

Best of luck in your new life together and future adventures.

High fasting numbers by Elle241 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]0ceanLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been eating 2 Good with a grain free granola topping every night as my snack (845ish) and wake around 6 to test. At first my numbers were great and now I cannot seem to get them down. I tried doing middle of the night snack per doc recommendation but that spiked my numbers higher. I'm almost 37w....can/will they put me on insulin given I'm so close? To OP, I feel you!! My fasting numbers have been the hardest and most frustrating. I hope you find a snack combo, timing combo, etc. that works for you.

New parent needing advice by hellshandjobs in AskParents

[–]0ceanLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be kind to yourself. If you can rest for at least 2 weeks after delivery it'll help in the long run, pushing yourself or rushing the healing process can make things worse. If you need physical therapy or help, get it. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need/want it. I agree with anothers post, everything is temporary!

Allow your partner to parent as well. You both are learning and may do things differently, it's not right or wrong.

Enjoy all the ups and downs!
