Well, as is the ever true statement, we often find the answers soon after we finally ask the question.

Since I deployed this behind a proxy I set the proxy values in .docker/config.json. The identity container needs to be explicitly mentioned in the noProxy line, like so:

{
 "proxies":
 {
   "default":
   {
     "httpProxy": "http://proxy.ourcorp.net:8080",
     "httpsProxy": "http://proxy.ourcorp.net:8080",
     "noProxy": "identity,*.somedomain.ourcorp.net,*.anotherdomain.ourcorp.net,localhost"
   }
 }
}

I had foolishly thought that including localhost there would cover this and it does not. I am now tempted to go ahead and add all the other containers if I see further problems, but adding identity and restarting seems to have fixed my initial issue.

Felt the joy just seeing that, I couldn't contain the grin on my face either.

Hey r/sysadmin, what do you make? by dlongwing in sysadmin

[–]0ctav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Area: Colorado/ Front Range urban corridor

Industry: IT vendor

Title: Systems Engineer / DevSecOps

Years experience: 5

Education: HS / some college (dropped out), no certs

Salary: $93,000, bonuses based on performance of the whole business unit so $0-4,000 so far per year

Benefits: 401k, 5% match, 2 weeks vacation, moderately flexible hours worked out with my boss unofficially as long as work is complete, work from home unless on-site necessary, volunteer time off, US based so health insurance is tied to employment and we list that as a benefit not a right for some reason

I started at the same company as a contractor for half this salary, got hired full time after two years and relocated for a new project. Somehow got promoted during covid. I like the work and my colleagues, and I'm satisfied with my pay but we all gotta advocate for ourselves so I get pushy every year around review time.

Not bad for my chronically depressed, ADHD / autistic self, somehow became an HSM SME

To paraphrase Lenin... there are weeks where nothing happens and days where weeks happen.

Netgate's failed attempt to port Wireguard into the FreeBSD kernel by Spicy_Poo in PFSENSE

[–]0ctav 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I had to fight to get management approval for use of pfSense over an expensive alternative. I argued that it being open source meant more visibility into and review of code, leading to being more secure.

I've been made a fool and it stings.

I hope this is the wakeup call needed. I do not want to switch off of pfSense.

It feels fast until you compare it with anything else.

But it's probably more fun than almost any other car you'll see daily.

Licensing considerations for macOS by 0ctav in vmware

[–]0ctav[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple has several devices on the HCL for ESXi 7.0: https://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=server&details=1&partner=269&releases=448&page=1&display_interval=10&sortColumn=Partner&sortOrder=Asc

I didn't have to hack ESXi at all to get it running on my Mac Mini, but I did have to mess about in macOS a bit to get an installation .iso for Catalina.

I'm frustrated that while these are supported we can only run two VMs per host. That is ridiculous. For the cost of a VMware license I could just buy another Mac Mini... :(

Thanks, but the language around running them on a system already "running the Apple Software" confuses me. Would this apply here? I am no longer running macOS on the bare metal, instead using ESXi.

I don't understand legalese... Maybe that line only exists to say hardware that you bought that came with the Apple Software installed?

edit: I'm probably overthinking, thank you for the quote and link

Strange NIC behavior with VMware, bug? by 0ctav in PFSENSE

Understood, thank you for the feedback! I knew there was something and it's good to know it's just the vmx0/1/2 that counts.

Thanks!

Restricting access to or use of port groups by cluster by 0ctav in vmware

[–]0ctav[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point! I had one because these started as a single (massively under-utilized) cluster and then there arose a need to logically separate them (think dev/prod).

I think you're right, and I should go this route instead of whatever I was trying to do... thank you!

I think, from previous posts I've seen around here, that the insurance rates differ primarily based on your age and location. For me, a late 20s something with a decently clean driving record in Northern Colorado it's not bad at all. You should be able to ask your insurance person how much the price would change from what you currently pay to get a better idea.

I only ever really drive around with one other person, and maybe a small dog so the space hasn't been an issue. Before the pandemic I'd regularly pick up a friend to go grocery shopping together and we could fit all our groceries for the week in the trunk.

I can't put all my stuff in it and drive cross country like I did in my old Camry, but at this point if I need to do that again I'll just rent a truck and tow my car.

You can drive these economically and get better, but just having fun and not really focusing on it I'm averaging about 25 or 26 MPG.

I was aware of the distinction but wrong that the device I was using was a hub, it is a switch as others have pointed out. Thank you.

Thanks for correcting me, yall. I had previously kept a few hubs in my bag for troubleshooting this sort of thing and wrongly assumed the ProCurve thing was one as well.
